Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

Jeffery, I went with a Buffalo system from PartsExpress.com - the biggest cost is the repeater device. I think the cheapest you can get by is just under $100, I don't know of anything less. http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage....7&WebPage_ID=3 B

Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

Good timing on the question for me! I just bought some Buffalo IR repeater flashers, receivers & repeaters, I have everything hooked up except for my Spacer System Dimmers. I just installed the Spacers - I have 2 side by side in a double ganged box. I haven't played with them much, I'm about to...

    Rear (7.1) speaker placement

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I ran the question by the speaker's designer, Mike at Audio Concepts Inc., he suggested I put the speakers closer together rather offset. I actually could have the speakers centered at the corner of the wall, but that separation isn't recommended. I think that...

    Rear (7.1) speaker placement

My room dimensions are 19' by 11'2". The back wall has a door in the left side that opens in. I'll put in a couple of rows of seating, probably the first row will be around 6' from the back wall, but I'll experiment some. Thanks, Bobby

    Rear (7.1) speaker placement

Hi, When I first started building my HT, I wired for 5.1, but later (based on advice given here), I went to 7.1. I'm about a week or so out from drywalling and I have a question about placement of my two rear speakers. First off, I am planning on having them at the same height as the...

    coax question

I'm not expert, but in hunting around, I found lots of people liked Belden 1694A for coax. Not an expensive cable, but so far, I have no complaints.

    Terminating in-wall speaker cable

Hi, I've run in-wall 14 ga. speaker wire for the fronts, center, surround & rears (a 7.1 system). The surrounds & rears will be on wall, so I think I'll just drill a hole in wall and directly connect the wire to the speakers. However for the front & center, I'm thinking that I don't want the...

    Dedicated Electrical Outlets?

Time to revive this thread I started 2 1/2 months ago - arggg, other projects got in the way. So anyhow, I'm starting to wire the room. For background, my electrical needs include 6 sconces on dimmers, power for amps, DVDs, tuners, projector, satellite, etc. (plus normal wall outlets for...

How do I do it? INwall speaker wire

Good question - the simple answer is no, the inspector should not have any problem with this. You'll notice that all high voltage wire is strung this way - holes through the studs. However I don't know how close to the edge is acceptable - there's probably some code that deals with this. My...

What caulking to seal around can lighting?

Cans are nice, but as stated, they do leak sound. My HT is in a small room w/ low ceilings (11 x 18, 79" high). For this reason I'm staying away from cans & using wall sconces.

How do I do it? INwall speaker wire

Marc, As Brian mentioned, you need wire specifically rated for in-wall use - CL-3. It - while more expensive it usually is a bit easier to pull. Like Brian, I wouldn't staple the wire in - better to drill a hole in the studs (toward the back so someone nailing something to the wall won't hit...

Looks great! By the way, what is the width of a row of chairs (overall)?

Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

Well after looking at the space I have (no separate equipment room), I've decided to have the Master in the HT, however I don't have room for it in the same box, I can only fit in a 2 ganged box where I want switches. So I put the master in its own box, nearby (probably just underneath the 2...

Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

Well I see Lutron also makes 1000 watt rated dimmers, so if this is an issue I could also move to those! Thanks

Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

Jay - thanks for all the feedback. At lunch yesterday I was talking w/ a co-worker who put in a few dimmers in 1 box (nothing fancy like the Lutron Spacers) - he said that as he recalled, when he put in the dimmers, he had to break part of the heat sink fin when installing multiple more than 1...

Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

This will be more like me. I have a small theater and I was planning on 2, maybe 3 zones. So the standard master is just ganged with the drimmers - I could live with a 3 gang switch, maybe 4. If you are using fewer zones, do you use a different remote or is the same remote used, regardless of...

Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

Jay, Wow! I just finished studding out my HT, my next task is wiring. I was wondering if I could do something like this - what an informative (and timely!) post. What I hope to use is wall scones, low ceilings & all. It's late - I'll study this in more detail tomorrow, but if I could ask a...

    soundproofing

Thanks for the reply. I actually need to bring air into the room as well. My main plenum is maybe 10' from the room (running parallel to it). I was thinking of running flexible (round) duct from the plenum into the room, inside a joist. If this is a desirable approach, does making the run twist...

    soundproofing

Wayne stated: "A problem you get with an airtight room is that the air conditioner will not work right, because they typically rely on leakage around and under the door for the air return. Therefore you need to install an air return vent in the ceiling." Makes perfect sense, however if...

    soundproofing

I would imagine that it is a source for sound loss. However if the cans are sealed with acoustic caulk, I'd imagine you'd lessen the loss.

    soundproofing

Derek, I'm in the same boat as you - to me my biggest concern is noise traveling upwards. Like you say, even without things cranked up, sound bleeds easily upstairs. I'm going to use (among other things) an extra layer of sheetrock in my ceiling. As it is, I have low ceilings, but the...

    soundproofing

I'm no expert, but from everything I've read and heard, the more there is mass, the less there is sound leakage. So, all things being equal, yes, 5/8" would be better. That being said, however, you need to be concerned with other areas of leakage. Let's say, for example, you isolate the room...
