Saw new version of Night of the Living Dead today... COLORIZED...?

I did both Disney's Zorro and Laurel and Hardy's March of the Wooden Soldiers in the early 90s. While they were both excellent for the time, both were done at low standard resolution using my first system which is inferior to the current Legend system. I can assure you there are no black and...

Can't argue with Colin's ears nor his 5.1 setup what ever that might be. Glad that he liked our (FOX) mono. Barry

Saw new version of Night of the Living Dead today... COLORIZED...?

Kevin - no prob... I was focusing on self calibrating monitors that will eventually mitigate color inconsistencies due to major variables between TV manufacturers and models. Also, the true color design (for purists) can only be appreciated in high def where limitations are not restricted to...

Saw new version of Night of the Living Dead today... COLORIZED...?

Hey Colin, The audio on NOLD is the best available on DVD today. I suggest you connect with Post Haste Audio in LA and have them explain how they improved upon the best releases of NOLD that are currently on the shelves. They did an exceptional job on this project. Post Haste used objective...

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Hey Kevin, Thanks for the mini review. Keep in mind that all colorized movies are a creative interpretation of the feature film taking into considering both the genre and the mood of the film. Some critics expect each colorized film to look exactly alike and often expect each film to look...

It's using a variation of an older colorization technology and it does not include the entire former cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 as the Legend Films release.

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Hi Andrew, You must be well connected :frowning: The DVD will not be released until 4-20. Yes, the colorization is not photo-real nor did we want to create that look. On the colorized version we took creative liberties. Since the movie is one huge cliche, we felt that an over the top comic...

Dan, I've worked with kine in the past. They generally don't hold up well and are too soft. However, I've done some quad tape that look very good. In particular, some old Judy Garland concerts many years ago that turned out fine considering the source.

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Kevin, We are well connected with the community of 35mm collectors and have access to some of the better prints if they exist at all. We have discussed doing a special feature within one of our DVDs which shows the difference between the original and the restored version. I'm in favor of...

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Brian - as a general rule, economics drive the restoration process for the studios. There are many films that will likely never again see the light of day because they simply don't have sufficient market value. Others will be slapped onto DVDs and VHS for distribution without much cleanup...

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Mark - Thanks for the comments. One thing that people may not realize is that the directors (in many cases) and the acting talent (in essentially all cases) made only a fraction of the money the studios made upon the original release of the films. Today only the studios realize revenue from...

    best edition of Reefer Madness?

One of the special features of the "Special Addiction" FOX release of Reefer Madness is a full feature commentary by Mike Nelson of Mystery Science Theater 3000. This is original and uncut specifically for the 4-20 release of the DVD. Not to be missed!!! Barry PS: The black and white...

Charlie - Latency... i.e., there would be a pause for a layer change and there is no guarantee it would happen on a cut. We'd be pushing the space on the DVD beyond the max. The DVD is incredibly rich in both video and audio and all audio would have to be done twice (consequently, taking up...

Jeremy - Mike Nelson has never been funnier than on our upcoming titles! He has a huge fan base and after writing several books, is resurfacing in a big way. I passed on your comments to him.

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Kevin and Charlie - We intended to introduce the angle change button for on the fly switch between black and white and color. However for several technical reasons that would likely degrade the viewing experience of the final color and B&W product we decided not to put that option into the release.

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Lew - Thanks for keeping an open mind and while skeptical, for understanding the economics of restoration. Regarding COS in color, think of it as a different feature, not the original black and white nor a product intended to replace the black and white. It should be a unique eperience that...

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Patrick - CST was a competitor that originally developed the analog system and later upgraded to a digital system similar to the one I developed for AFT. Both companies went out of business because they grew too large for the market and created a work for hire business. At the end of the day...

Peter - We're doing color special effects on a feature film that will be released next year. That work was done at 2,000 lines but we could have done the work at 4,000 lines if required. The restoration and colorization was heralded as excellent by the director. I can't divulge the feature...

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Peter, The Shirley Temple films you refer to were colorized before I developed the original digital process 12 years ago. The system used was analog and I agree, it was gastly but it was the first colorization effort. Did you know it won a technical Oscar? You haven't seen the high...

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Hi Rick, I'll get in touch with them. I remember working on some of the titles back in the early 90s as a test when the older digital system was in its infancy. The product was good for the time but certainly not what it could be today. I'll let you know how I make out. Much depends on the...

Derek - hold off on your criticism until you've see the restored black and white and the colorized versions. Lew - hold back judgement until you've seen the colorized version of "Carnival of Souls". This surreal classic is even more bazarre than the original after our creative team put their efforts in. We addressed the original intent of the director and made the feature scarier than ever. Of course...

And you thought (hoped) colorization was dead....

Nick - That is not the intent nor will it ever happen. All of our DVDs will have both the the fully restored colorized version and the fully restored black and white version. The studios would never neglect the original version and will always offer it, particularly the version that we restore...
