I think that you also get upgraded dac's and also PLII and NEO 6, I don't think these were on the ref 30. It also has a notch filter on the 50, that may not be on the 30 either.

well, I made my decision and bought actually a ref 50 because of the great price I got for it, (my salesman hooked me up!) so far it sounds great for home theater and pretty good for music (way better than my $300 Yamaha!), and I think I can live with it for a while. Thanks for your help...
