OVA stands for Original Video Animation (or OAV Original Video Animation). Basically it means the anime is meant to go straight to video without airing on tv or at the theater. The quality of these animation-wise is usually higher than series, due to bigger budgets.

I had that problem with Super Gals, I had trouble lasting through more than four or five episodes at a time. It was just too much "Gal", which can get annoying. I enjoyed the series overall though but still cant quite put my finger on why it seemed everyone was going so bat shiat crazy for it...
