I have to say that I much preferred the theatrical cut. While the new opening is quite beautiful and moody... one of the great assets of the original cut was how it dropped you into the story and never really let you catch up. Same thing with Tubbs and Trudy in the diner scene (new to the cut)...
Here's an odd question for other people... So I just hooked a friend on the series with this seasons episodes. Which is good... But he is convinced based off the first four episodes of season 4 that Cutty is a pedophile. Maybe I've just become so enamored with his character that I'm...
My guess is that if we ever see a director's cut it will actually run shorter. It will include new footage, but like most of the other Micheal Mann Director's cut, he will cut out as much footage as he puts back in. If a director's cut happens that is.
I think the actor who plays Clay Davis may deliver the most impressive reading of dialogue of all time in episode #2. SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT
Now that the series is over... I'm still disappointed that they never used Nick Cave's "Rye whiskey" song. It always seemed to me like the perfect Deadwood closing credit song.
Vice was a mess of a movie, but a brilliant mess.
I like the continuation of what Mann did with Collateral which was using digital as it's own thing as opposed to trying to mimic film.
And did any one else feel like they were watching something from HBO with all those actors from HBO series...
I also the feel the need to add, though hesitantly, that the other major flaws are some of the staging and actions in the climactic scene.
Which isn't to take away from what a ridiculously good film this is... there are just some choices I didn't agree with.
On the positive hand, this was one...
I started to really get into this show while I watched it's reruns during the Sopranos this season. The concept always struck me as inherently distasteful... But it proved me wrong. I like these characters, and I want the best for them. It's also funny as hell! So I apologize for...
Well hell! Why don't I mention a case of a T.V version of a film being infinitely superior to the theatrical release? Ingmar Bergman's "Fanny and Alexander"! Roughly two and a half hours longer, and is Ingmar's preferred cut. True, it only showed on Swedish T.V... and I would think...
I can't beleive no one mentioned the funniest fucking line of the entire season from last week! Al: (Looks around, sees Dan smiling happily at him, he points at Dan) Did you fuck me while I was out? Dan: Hell, no. Al: Well quit looking at me like that.
I think the reason people respect Ebert, as I do, has little to do with his taste in film (god knows I disagree with his opinion on almost everything)... but that he is a shinning example of how to write subjectively. He puts it all out on the table in such a way, that even if he didn't like a...
I gotta ask... Does any one else find it as morbidly funny as I do when Gandalf says "So passes Denethor, son of Ecthelion"? I mean, the man is still running around on fire. Shouldn't he at least wait until Denethor collapses before saying that? What a bastard. :D
... You stole my joke. Seriously, that's the only thing I remember about that movie (aside from inadvertently creating Harry Knowles "Aint it cool?" thing). I also remember hoping no one ever blew up another helicopter ever again in any film for the next twenty years.
I was hoping someone else would reply to this... because I really don't have the right kind of language skills to explain it. All I could really do is sit you down on a couch next to me and pop in some films and say over and over again "DO YOU SEE! DO YOU SEE!" I still hope someone else...
In response to Ernest's post as to why one would make a CGI film that could have live action actors and why use motion capture technology for it (or as would be more apt in Polar Expresses's case, digital wardrobe)... The argument I've heard, that I don't quite fully agree with, but does...
To be more specific, the Stand Alone Complex T.V series and the two movies are not in continuity with one another. Essentially the manga (comic) the T.V series, and movies are all different tellings of the same basic concepts and characters, but they do not directly intersect (though the T.V...
I know this isn't anywhere near any current discussion going on in this thread but... I just finished watching Gasaraki and was wondering if there was any online resource that discussed or analyzed the plot in any detail. While I found it fascinating and enjoyable overall, there were many...
Sopranos Season 1 The original broadcast of the first four (maybe it was five?) episodes featured a montage of the next episode set to the closing credit music without dialogue. This was shown before the credits ran. I was always sad they dropped it after only a few episodes because it...
I think, for me, the best way to compare Man on Fire with Eternal Sunshine as far as top ten lists go is, Eternal Sunshine's visual style seemed to be based off the material, whereas Man on Fire's visual style seemed independently developed from the story. That is to say, it doesn't matter...
From what I remember from the script, the idea was that most of the scenes with Pai Mei would be poorly dubbed (intentionally) into English for both Pai Mei and the bride. I guess Tarantino was going to be the english voice. But somewhere along the line he abandoned the idea.
This is quite possibly the greatest single disc special edition ever made. Not a wasted moment. And I can't wait for the Rodriguez Ten Minute F**KING school... because seriously, I could use some help.
Concerning running times; I was under the impression that an Imax over 120 minutes was not possible and for films longer than that undergoing the DMR transfer, that certain scenes would be cut (as was the case for Episode II). However, when I saw Matrix Reloaded Imax, the entire film was...
I just have to add I am so happy they included the entire Laserdisc archives for Alien and Aliens. I just loved the way those things were put together... a making of book with visual aids. Sure it hurt my eyes like hell after a few hours, but man! Never was able to buy those discs since they...
They did a great job in score re-editing... except for one of the most important scenes. Ripley's dive into the furnace had to be massively re-edited (for obvious reasons when you see the new cut) and it just doesn't work. Falls a little flat. Too much build up and not enough release. But...
