DVI input ( TV ) question

What does this DVI ( digitl visual interface ) input do? Is it best to buy a DVD player, with this output or is the S-Video connection good enough? Maybe a satellite receiver is the best way to maximize the DVI potential? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Frank

    Directv,Tivo want HDTV

I have a HDTV ready unit with Directv and Tivo. It looks like I need to pay a fortune to get both HDTV and Tivo with Directv. Is this right or am I MISSING SOMETHING? I don't want to go to cable, but I may have to if the prices don't come down. Any thoughts or suggestions?
