Fanny & Alexander: Criterion 5-Disc - any reviews?

The packaging is similar to the Cassavetes set; an external slipcase holds 3 inner thinpaks, one each for the theatrical version, the TV version and the remaining 2 discs. I've taken a very brief look at a couple of scenes and the thing seems to be on par with the usual Criterion standards. I...

So what's the big deal about Criterion Collection?

I'd also naturally welcome a lower price tag, but the combination of exceptional films and great presentation (whenever that is the case) makes many Criterions impossible to pass for me. Again I suppose it comes down to what Thomas said, namely that it depends on whether you find the films worth...

    Akira Kurosawa Recommendations

If you liked Ikiru, you'll probably want to check "The Lower Depths", "High and Low" and "Red Beard", the Criterion versions of which are all exceptional. It would seem that many people with more than a passing interest in Kurosawa agree that his non-Samurai pictures are just as important from...

The King of Kings and M: Special Edition - Criterion Collection (specs!)

Great news regarding M. Should be a stellar presentation, not unlike Criterion's treatment of The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. If only they'd acquire the rights to "Die Nibelungen"...

    Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection: 9/7!

Also, the story and screenplay of Blow Up were co-written by Antonioni, so it's difficult to imagine how it would turn out in the hands of a director with primarily commercial preferences.

    Huge DVD Coverart Update!

I'm tempted to buy The Fearless Vampire Killers after seeing the cover alone.

Scenes from a marriage - TV or Film first?

Also, unless I'm mistaken, Scenes From a Marriage was originally made for Swedish television and only later was released theatrically, which would mean the TV version is the original one. The same thing happened with Fanny and Alexander, with the 5-hour TV version being the "director's cut".

Donnie Darko: Director's Cut DVD - Coming Soon!

10/4 is apparently the UK release date for the director's cut. For details, check dvdtimes.co.uk.

    Euro 2004

Greece qualifying for the final has to be the greatest hoax in recent football history. The Czechs should have scored at least three times in regular time AND they were denied a clear penalty by a very biased (throughout the match) referee. Not to mention that they were one of the best teams in...

La Dolce Vita - is it coming?

Me too, although I'd rather wait for some early reviews just to make sure. The inclusion of the mono track is a welcome relief, though, and I don't have much of a problem with the PAL issue, as long as it remains a speedup one and does not affect the transfer. I guess living in a "PAL" country...

*** Official THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING Discussion Thread

In the book, Gandalf's response to the Mouth of Sauron upon seeing Frodo's coat is that they'll need to see Frodo himself dead in order to consider surrendering. Apparently he still hopes that he's alive somehow (although the sight of the coat does manage to lower everyone's morale...

    Travesty on Alias Season 2

On a somewhat similar note, the revelation of plot points regarding later episodes is quite prominent on the extra features of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine sets. Apparently the dvd producers' assumption was that those buying the sets have already watched the series right to the end. I was...

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: Star Trek Deep Space Nine - Season 7 (Highly Recommended)

I'd like to echo some of the sentiments expressed above regarding DS9 on DVD. These discs were (are) my first encounter with the series and the experience has been absolutely wonderful. I'm currently finishing the excellent season 5. I just viewed "Blaze of Glory" yesterday and will likely watch...

HTF REVIEW: Once Upon a Time in the West (Very Highly Recommended!)

Every time I watch this I remember how it has to be the most "fulfilling" western I've ever seen. Leone managed to incorporate all the ingredients of the genre and, at the same time, elevate it to a different level, due to the fact that every element of the film is impeccable (direction...

Scenes That Gave You A Chill...

One scene I watched recently and was reminded of its effectiveness: In Once upon a Time in the West, when Henry Fonda's Frank rides towards the final confrontation with Charles Bronson, as the railroad finally reaches Sweetwater. IMO, a truly haunting combination of image and score. "Nothing...

New details on Paramount’s forthcoming ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST DVD.

I had the chance to watch the R2 version of the film yesterday and it was an amazing experience, since it was also my first widescreen viewing of it. The transfer appears to be stunning, with spot-on contrast, minimal to non-existent print damage and no visible edge enhancement, at least on my...

DVD Review HTF DVD REVIEW: "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" w/scrnshts (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

On the October issue of Empire Magazine (UK), the director of T3 said that that there would be a second DVD version of the film in the future, since the deadline for the first release didn't allow him to produce all the features he had wished to include. I'll try to find the article and paste it...
