Criterion really has avoided double dipping on Blu-ray. Setting aside a few titles in the Bergman and Fellini sets, Monterey Pop is the only time they have re-released a Blu-ray with a new transfer. So it is a pretty safe bet that if they are going to re-release something like Breathless or Le...
The Virgin Suicides and Night of the Living Dead are the 4K upgrades that are closest to the original Blu-ray release (about 4 years for both.) I think about 5 years is enough time to not be upset at an upgrade, especially if those releases happened before a company started releasing UHDs...
The Channel is available in Canada (though there tends to be a number of titles that aren't available to stream - usually stuff from IFC or Sony or Canadian films.)
Salo and The Trilogy of Life are owned by MGM, and I believe the 9 titles in this set are all now with Janus. So the omission of Salo & The Trilogy of Life's is likely licensing related. (Although they did duplicate the Fellini MGM titles in their Fellini box.)
In addition to the rights issue with Bullet in the Head (the film's non-HK rights are owned by a company that is no longer in the film business and they have no interest in licensing the film), rumor has it that the elements for Woo's preferred cut no longer exist.
Unfortunately those are with a property management company and rumor has it that they aren't interested in licensing out titles, they want to dump the entire Golden Princess catalog. Which is likely too much money for any boutique. Add to that there are a lot of titles in the catalog that just...
Kino Insider said it was with a label. I can't imagine that it would be of interest to the likes of Lionsgate or Shout Factory or Severin, but it is a title that Criterion would jump at.
Looking at the old NYD drawings and Safety Last came out two years before the clock clue I was thinking of.
That clue was also a number of years before the After Hours rumors.
WB's deal with the Saul Zaentz Company had expired, but George Feltenstein had said, last year I think, that they finally renewed it.
I know the film got a 4K restoration a few years ago, so I think it is likely that Criterion will be re-issuing it next year.
I think it was a giant clock...
About After Hours, the rumor started when someone claiming to be Mike White of the Projection Booth Podcast posted on reddit that they were working on an episode devoted to the film and Criterion was going to release the film on Blu-ray. To the best of my knowledge the supposed podcast never...
"For those regarded as warriors, when engaged in combat the vanquishing of thine enemy can be the warrior's only concern. Suppress all human emotion and compassion. Kill whoever stands in thy way, even if that be Lord God, or Buddha himself. This truth lies at the heart of the art of combat." -E.T.
Especially annoying as, apart from massive titles like Reservoir Dogs, this is just about the only way Lionsgate is releasing UHDs. (I know Bob's Burgers is a Fox title.)
Interesting to note that the two box sets have an MSRP of $79.95 instead of Criterion's usual $99.95 and it appears that both are going to be 3-disc Scanavo cases instead of digipaks.
Funny that November, usually their strongest month, ended up being overshadowed by their great October slate.
The lack of boxsets this year, I assume, has been a disappointing side effect to their releasing UHDs. I really was hoping for a Pasolini 100 set, as Janus has at least 6 of his 12...
