    Coaxial or Optical ??

Steve and HeinD: I think I know what you guys are trying to get at; that in ideal circumstances, optical should beat coaxial in terms of the quality of sound one hears through each system, all other things being equal. We could argue theory all day long; hell, that's what we're doing! But, I...

    Match Color w/components?

Cobalt blue LED's are the bomb. What happened to all the flashing lights though? Used to be a guy could buy a piece-of -s**t EQ or receiver that had lots of cool flashing lights. How about those flourescent green ones from the '80s. Knobs and switches are for wussies; real men use flashy lights...

    Match Color w/components?

Adam, Brett, and Andrew: You guy's are cookin' now. And Brett, (Silver just looks so sexy and black doesn't.... Yeah I love the way silver looks) you've got the right attitude! Andrew, you tell it about Black Power! Adam, you've got an admirably progressive attitude. Don't take any...

    Coaxial or Optical ??

John: You seem like the kinda' guy who believes that the rest of the world is not as smart as him. I think it was Plato, maybe Socrates, who is first known to have said, "The more I learn, the less I know." Believe it or not, there are a lot of very bright people who design and manufacture...

    Match Color w/components?

I think I like this thread. Let's face it, as much as we whine about perfect reproduction, the way our equipment looks has as much to do with our choice of gear as how well it works. And unlike Jonathan Swift, I'm being serious here, when I propose that we take a stand, and purchase only...

    S-Video vs Component

Josh: What's the name and Email address or website of the the A/V store that told you that an S-video would give you a better picture than component?

    receiver for around $200

A $200 spending limit for a receiver will severely limit the features you'll have available. Denon is changing it's product lineup, so you may be able to pick up an AVR-1403 on sale for under $300. You can get their new model for $299. The sweet spot for low-price A/V receivers is $500. For...

    Kenwood HTB - 205 vs 206?

You get what you pay for. Your budget will purchase you a very unsatisfying surround sound system. You may consider saving yourself the expense. The sub-$500.00 "home theater" systems have such poor tonal quality, poor imaging, and poor range or reproduction, that they would barely be an...

    Coaxial or Optical ??

John: You understand. Now if only Ted would quit naysaying and join us. There is a reason that ultra-high-performance transports and D/A converters don't include TosLink connectors; coax is better, AT&T is better, AES/EBU is better, everything is better than TosLink.

    Coaxial or Optical ??

Ted: You mistake my incredulity for hostility. But let us not muddy the issue, and that is that coax sounds better than TosLink. No amount of debate, no changing threads, no surprise at finding out for the first time the bandwidth limitation, will change that. All of these are reasons, not...

    Coaxial or Optical ??

Jonathan: If you had read this thread, you would have seen HeinD address the issue that you bring up. And by the way, What the F**K does an MRI have to do with high-end audio?

    Coaxial or Optical ??

I believe that you put too much faith in "hard facts." Facts have their place, but they are highly contextual. Do a fair listening test. You will hear the difference. Coax sounds better. "Plastic filament Toslink is very high loss by comparison and only has a bandwidth of 6 Mhz. It would be...

    Coaxial or Optical ??

"TosLink is by far the worst interface, both mechanically (the physical connection between cable and jack), electrically (it has the lowest bandwidth), and sonically. TosLink connection tends to blur the separation between individual instrumental images. adds a layer of grunge over instrumental...

    Dorm Theater System

If most of what you comes from this forum, I recommend that you broaden your sources. Not that there's no useful information here, but here you'll find mostly the same point of view. Go ask your local computer and A/V store what they each recommend.

    Coaxial or Optical ??

Coaxial is a better way to send digital than Toslink. Toslink provides a worse connection (it comes loose more easily), it has lower bandwidth than coaxial, and it just sounds worse in general.

    Component cable question

You can use a screwdriver to pound nails, but better to use a hammer. In other words, use the right tool for the job. Get yourself some component cables. A good set will cost you about $40.00 at your local independent A/V shop. Don't cheap out.
