I don't look at it as extra cost, since with the Epiphonies all I had to do was crank up the volume to may be another 10dB (on my 2803 Denon) to get the same output. Unless you are already hitting the max on your receiver, this by itself shouldn't be a big problem. The 340 L/R's with their...
I had the Ascend 340 and the Epiphony at home at the same time. The Epiphonies definitely had much better bass than the 340 and their high's were comparable. But yes, the Epiphonies need much more power, I had to crank up the volume quite a bit more with them to get the same loudness as the...
Isn't the dB level vs freq graph a good measure of the SUB? For example, 78 dB at 20 Hz of SUB-X is better than say 68 db at 20 Hz of SUB-y? Or does it only mean that SUB-X is louder than SUB-Y? BTW, I didn't see the freq response graph of HSU or SVS on their site. Is it available on their sites...
So is the Adire a more musical sub than the HSU or the SVS subs? BTW the term "musical" sub I suppose implies that the sub "intrudes" more into music than a non-musical sub. But isn't this just controlled by the crossover settings?
How low does the AdireRAVA sub go? On their site this info isn't there as straight forward as like how the HSU site says "25 Hz to 100 Hz +/- 2dB freq response". There is a freq response graph on the Adire site but I don't know how to interpret it. Even at 20Hz the dB level is as high 78, does...
That's a bummer! Wouldn't the max extension mode (that lets you go lower) be a better choice, in general? Don't (or didn't?) you tune your VTF-3 sub to the max extension mode?
Assuming STF-3's freq response is the same as VTF-3's, isn't its 18Hz significantly better than the SVS's PB-1 ISD's 22Hz ? Do you know the port size of the STF-3?
You should definitely check out the Boston Acoustics VR-1's. You could probably get a pair of 'em for around $550 at Tweeters. I own them, they are awesome, great value for their price. Click here to check out my review of the VR-1's that I wrote in this forum.
The above is from the HSU site in the small section about the STF. I guess this 'variable tuning' gives more control for customization. Is this a required/useful feature? Do the other subs that I've mentioned have this feature? BTW, there is very little info on STF subs on HSU site.
I have Boston VR-1 fronts, VR-C center and Axiom QS-8's rear (and an old Aiwa sub) Am looking forward to adding a good SUB to this system of mine. From the reviews here, the most popular ones in the price range I'm looking for are, Adire Audio RAVA, HSU VTF-2, SVS PB-1 ISD. My fronts have pretty...
Chris, No, I thought the VR-2's were slightly better than the VR-1's, but the VR-3's were more significantly better than the VR-2's and VR-1's. I paid $540 for the pair of VR-1's. My rest of the system is VR-C center channel, Axiom QS-8's surrounds. I have a very old Aiwa powered sub which...
I recently bought the VR-1's and these are awesome. I did in-house comparison of quite a few bookshelf speakers (aperions, axioms, ascends, odyssey-audio) and finally bought the VR-1's. I didn't do in-house comparison of any other floorstanding speakers with the VR-1, but I don't think these can...
I didn't even listen to the VR-MX speakers at all, since they were much more expensive than what I was planning to spend for the surrounds. Yes, the VR-M series are extremely good looking speakers, but VR-1's aren't bad either in their red cherry finish. Only problem is there is no matching...
I listened to all three, the VR-1, VR-2 and VR-3. I thought the VR-2's sounded a little better than the VR-1's and the VR-3's little more better than the VR-2's. Meaning, the difference between the VR-3 and the VR-2 was more than that of VR-2 and VR-1 to my ears. But value for money, you just...
Happened to me too when I was looking for some reviews of Boston Acostics VR-1's, only hit upon Von Schweikert's VR-1's. In general, there is very little (almost nothing) about Boston Acoustics in this forum. AVS forum has a little bit more about BA but not a lot. Ganesh.
Here's my experience so far in my search for the right speakers for me... I started off on a big home theater quest about a little over a month back. Compared Aperions, Axioms and Ascends and found Axioms better than Aperions, Ascends better than Axioms. But I still wasn't satisfied as the...
The pedestal stand is boxy and so combined with the 340, it looks like one big long tower speaker. Whereas, for the 170 you could have a less conspicuous stand which won't be visually so dominating. (Like a regular stand, for example: http://www.stacksandstacks.com/html/8305.htm I don't...
BTW, yet another point is that the 340's with their matching stands is quite overwhelmingly and unfavorably bigger than I imagined. And this brings up a question, how do people here that own 170's L/R mount them - on the wall or floor stands? Mounting them on walls will be less space occupying...
I finally got in my 340 L/R's in and I've been listening and comparing them with the Axiom M22ti's for the past 2 days. It's been an interesting experience so far. My first impressions were 'Hmmm.... it does sound slightly better' and since then it's been growing on me big time! And now it...
What? Triple crossover?! I have a Denon 2803 and all it has ONE crossover (for the sub). Is this unique to HK-525 or is it hidden in the Denon somewhere? PS: Still waiting to receive the Ascends ...
I had to have the surrounds on the rear wall, since there was no enclosing wall on one side of the listening area. For this, the Axiom's QS8's work great for me for the surrounds, compared to the Aperions. Since the QS8's have two angled tweeters and two woofers one facing up and one facing...
Thanks to Curtis, who has been both painstakingly and enthusiastically answering my questions, after pondering over the options I've ordered the Ascend 340 L/R's. BTW I received my Axioms M22's today and they sound very nice. Nice little extra mid-bass compared to the Aperions and sound fuller...
Curtis, From what you are saying it looks like the 340's are better in every way, the lows/mids and the highs. But what did you mean by the 170's are better than the 340's in nearfield? My listening area is about 17x17x8 (though the room is 30 ft long), speakers will be about 12/13 feet from...
Curtis, Thanks for the invitation, but I live all the way across the country, Salem, NewHampshire! Ain't gonna be able to drive down on a weekend to checkout your setup. Sighhhhh... BTW, what is 'MTM arrangement' ? Ganesh.
From where did you guys get the info on the 340 L/R's? It's not even mentioned on their web-page (only the center is). Are they physically pretty much the same as the center, except maybe the tweeter is above the 2 woofers (and not in between)? Since they have 2 6.5"'s vs one in 170, they...
