Little more progress today. Stuck the receiver in the cabinet - it had to go in from the back and fit with 1/4" to spare. Turns out the Radio Shack IR repeater I got doesn't work with it, so I guess I'll have to find an H-K one. I also dropped in a spare phono I had lying around. It also...
Ok guys it has begun. Hope you don't mind lots of pictures. I picked up this Harmon-Kardon HK 3490 receiver from NewEgg to replace the 1965-vintage electronics. First order of business, pull out the old receiver and turntable. Pretty straightforward once I figured out how they were mounted...
Thanks Jeff, that's basically what I was trying to determine. I'm going to take a completely different direction, I think. Something involving touch screens :) I'll post up pix here once I start gathering components. -Joe
Thanks for the reply, Chas. As I said above, I do want to replace the receiver and turntable with modern units. I just want to do it in such a way that it looks nice and doesn't ruin the aesthetic of the original. That's why I was asking if any modern components are made with the controls on...
Yes, it does weigh a ton :) I did manage to get it out of my pickup and into my house by myself with some creative wrangling. I do want to replace the electronics with new gear. I was hoping to find something in a similar form factor, though, so I don't have to do too much modification to...
I found this beautiful old stereo cabinet at our local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. The price was ludicrously cheap, so I had to take it home. Turns out, it works and sounds great! I don't know if someone replaced the speakers at some point (there's a date of 12/1965 on the back on the...
Morning, all. I'm building a set of A/V-2's (fronts/center) to replace the old Cerwin-Vega cabinets in my home theater. I'm maintaining a build-a-long here at my website, but here's the pix so far (click for full-size). All that's left is gluing up the center channel, rounding the corners and...
Hey all. I'm waiting for my 300-754 amp and port to get here so I can finish my 142.5l EBS Shiva box. I've been reading about a lot of people bottoming their Shivas even with the built-in rumble filter. From my existing setup, I've got a pair of 20hz FMods. Would it be a bad idea (from either...
Thanks, I will. Once the PE stuff gets here I'll start a new thread with some pictures and SPL measurements. Incidentally, here's some pix of the sub that this one is replacing: http://www.gotmaille.com/sub/ -Joe
Cool, thanks. That's one less thing to worry about :) Would adding a bit of polyfill help "make up" for the lost space, or should I just forget it? I'm not worried about max SPL, I just want it to sound good and play low. Thanks, -Joe
Actually, there's a misprint on their website. It should be 4 1/4" deep, not 3 1/4". So assuming 1/2" for heatsinks and 3/4" for MDF, that's 4.1 liters of displacement. Will that still be negligible in a 142.5l enclosure? If I add a 3/4" spacer that drops the displacement to 3 liters. Thanks...
I'm so glad to hear that ;) It's the 142.5l EBS enclosure, so I think I can give up a couple of liters. 2 liters is only 1.4% of the volume. I'll prolly shim it up with a layer of MDF to minimize the impact. Thanks! -Joe
Hey all. I'm just finishing up a new enclosure for my Shiva III. I had been running it off one of the channels in my Outlaw 7100 amp (160w RMS into a 4 ohm load). I've now decided that I want more oomph, so I've been looking at: Parts Express 300-794 ...which seems a good compromise...
Dave, Thanks for the post. I kinda figured the price was the problem. However, I'm already losing $20 on it at $110, so I guess I'll return it to Amazon. I just figured if someone needs it, I'd offer it to a fellow enthusiast first. Thanks for the views, all. I'm going to officially stop...
I hesitate to call it NIB, because I took it out and started programming it. I stopped when I found out it couldn't learn my Sony TV's "ANT" function. Apparently, Sony uses a "double code" for this button, and the MX-500 doesn't handle that. Home Theater Master's tech support is amazing. They...
Here's a build in progress...It's going to be a coffee table sub with a chessboard top. Adire Shiva III, 85l vented. Click here to see all of the pictures... Here's what the top looks like so far: The green stuff is a cover for the sub box. Since I've been using it as a coffee...
I'll be naked for a little while ;) I plan on veneering it and putting a chessboard top on it to use as a coffee table. We'll see how soon that gets done :) -joe
Hello everyone! I wanted to thank you again for your suggestions, and post some pictures so you could see my progress. The sub is now in my living room, performing like a champ. On movies like the Two Towers, the bass is immense, especially the flapping dragon wings. On music, the bass is...
For your mix, I'd vote 4:3, personally. I paid $1234 at Sears. They had a deal at the time for $80 off a DVD player if you purchase them together. I needed one, so I did and saved $80 more. -Joe
Steven, precisely why I went with the 32HS510 myself. However, that said, if you're going to be watching DVDs 90% of the time, it might make more sense to go with tht 16:9. Even though the widescreen image is physically the same size, it "feels" bigger on a true 16:9 set. I play a lot of...
I'm aware that stuffing the box will make it appear larger, but if the alignment of the vented box is designed for 89l, won't stuffing it ruin the alignment? I had contacted Adire about this and they said...let me find the email...I had asked them if it was OK to build the box a bit smaller...
Hey all. I'm building the Adire 85L vented design for the Shiva III using their reference design. This is my first vented sub, and my first home theater sub. When I calculated the actual interior volume of the box in Adire's plans, it was about 89.5l, so that's the value I'm using for my box...
Just thought I'd share my project with you folks. This is the reference design for the Adire Shiva. 85l vented design, Adire alignment. It was originally 19x19x20. I squished it using my spreadsheet, and now the box is about 76l, because I'm going to stuff it...
