I tend to agree with this article mostly. I'm the proud owner of a new Sony Wega 46 inch HD LCD, and even I am planning on sticking with DVD as long as I can. I've been tempted of late to dip into HD-DVD or Blu-ray, but it's just not worth it for me. My dvds (when upconverted) look better than...
Just saw this movie the other night. Expected to not like it very much. I LOVED THIS MOVIE. It was nonstop fun from beginning to end. Not to mention the workout the dvd gives to my home theater system. Wow! oh and wtf? Eddie Murphy lost Best Supporting Actor to Alan Arkin?! (sorry...
I'm not so naive as to believe that this is not partly behind every release. However, when Sam Raimi says that it is not his preferred cut, but has some scenes that would be fun to see, or to hear Ridley Scott (in his intro to Gladiator: EE) grudgingly say that there are some scenes that...
**Warning: Rant below.** I'm inclined to agree with those who side with the original theatrical cut. It's not that the 2.1 cut doesn't work, it's just that there's no need for it. What happened to the good old days when the version you saw in the theaters was what you were meant to see...
Agreed. I've got a 46 inch Sony Wega HD LCD, and was less than impressed with the quality of my dvds (they had a distracting grainy quality to them), and was starting to consider going HD, but then I got the Sony player. My dvds look incredible now. In my opinion, it's definitely worth it.
That news is dated the 25th, yet WB supplied Davisdvd.com with hi-res front & back artwork on the 27th, with no news of a delay. I'll wait for further confirmation before getting too worried. EDIT: Also, that news has to do with the HD release, so perhaps the Standard DVD is unaffected?
I, personally, am very happy they are releasing these versions on their own. They deserve it. They made cinema history. There's a chill I get down my spine watching the theatrical cut of FotR that the EE will never rival. That doesn't mean I have to prefer the Theatrical cut, but the film I saw...
Alas, I fear I'm regretting my purchase of this dvd. While the always great Peter Jackson behind-the-scenes material kept me entertained for a few days, it now, like most bonus material, seems to be inconsequential. As for the extended cut itself, I'm not excited about that anymore either...
Without a significant amount of footage added, I don't see the need for an upgrade. With so little stuff added back, all having very little apprarent effect on the complete film, I'd think that's what a deleted scenes section would be for. I'm quite happy with the 2-disc collector's edition.
Nice...:D I like extras, but not so much that it would hold me back from a purchase. Besides, I'll still get the commentary - which the only extra that usually gets me excited anyway. I'll also be picking up Goldfinger, but the others I can live without.
The slight cropping is an odd thing, but I don't imagine it would end up hindering my viewing of the film if I got it - and believe me, I would love to get it (it's my favorite Bond film). Unfortunately, I just can't bring myself to purchase a whole Box set for one film (I don't really feel the...
Rented this today. Still entertaining. Better on second viewing, but still not worthy of being next to the first two films. It just doesn't feel like it's from the same film series. The others had so much more depth.
The older disc is horrid, but the newer "Immortal Edition" one is pretty good (and likely the best the film will probably ever look). I just recently revisited this one (love this movie!) and was not distracted by any PQ issues. But, yeah, if we're talking the old Republic disc - it's...
Well, I'm definitely gonna hold off for the 2007 box set. I've never been strictly a O-OT purist; I grew up on the Special Editions and like them very much. It's just that I really got annoyed with the technical goofs of the 2004 set. Hopefully, they will all get corrected and I will be happy...
Amen to that. I've always thought the perfect break would come after Theoden says "No more despair". I think that's where PJ designated the Theatrical Intermission (if theaters so desired) and I think it works perfectly as a break for the Extended Cut.
Well, I've had a fascination for the film since I saw it in theaters. It's flawed, to be sure - but still quite the noble effort. As much as I applaud Farrell for trying his hardest, I still don't think he was quite right for the role (though I think he has his moments). Certain other...
Elijah, you raise an interesting point. In years past, we never had so many director's/extended cuts. It's getting a bit frustrating and it takes some of the wonder out of falling in love with a movie at the cinema. The only alternate cuts that I've really accepted beyond the theatrical...
The 13 minutes bit is good news. I thought the LotR movies perfectly merited every second of the added material, but I wasn't sure about having a 4-hour version of King Kong. The length seemed pretty good in the theater. But 13 minutes isn't too much and it should be great material. I'm sold. :)
"I am very happy with the way the extended cut DVDs are now fleshing out the trilogy. This one I think was about 43 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and, you know, I think the extra material that's in here - particularly things like Merry and Pippin in Fangorn and the Ent stuff - it...
The reunion scene is crucial. The emotion displayed in that scene (especially when Frodo sees Sam) is second to none. After the heartbreaking terror of the Mount Doom sequence, I was smiling ear to ear during this scene. As a matter of fact, not a second of the 20 minute denouement could be cut...
Live action, animated, whatever! All I care about is that we're getting Dragonlance!!!!! Kickass! This is so weird, I was just about to reread the novels - and now this news! :) This might actually be really good, since I was always worried about the casting - especially Raistlin...
It was. That's the only gift you see given.
In my mind, the theatrical cuts are only superior to the extended cuts if you MUST watch one of the films in a single sitting. The pacing keeps the momentum going so that it doesn't feel like three hours.
As for my own viewing - I do it Epic style...
Yes, excellent. From what I've been following, this is not simply like the longer cut that was 155 min. That featured more nature shots, a bit more dialogue here and there, etc. This is supposed to be an extensive reworking of the film (3 hours!) with more character bits. Which is exactly...
I'm not so sure anymore that I would so easily give into buying these. Last night, I jumped right out and said I would - but with added thought, it's not worth it, I think. The documentary will be good, and the cover art is tempting - but I already own these films. Hell, I'm finally shelving the...
Do they have to make the packaging so damn gorgeous?!!!! Come to think of it, that is the kind of packaging I always wished for the original theatrical versions. :D No doubt, I'll buy these. I'll be weak for doing so, but LotR owns my soul. hehe Over the years, I've come to have a greater...
Well.... ...on the day that I happen to be watching tv on a 102" 16x9 screen (?!!!), I'm sure I'll want to upgrade to HD-DVD. (No wonder so many of you guys go nuts over HD - sometimes I forget I'm on a Home Theater Forum - as opposed to just some random movie board; I'm still quite far...
