    ATI 8500dv HDTV dongle required?

I personally use the ATI dongle to output DVDs at 1080i (using DVDidle software) and have very good results (my set is not ISF calibrated, so I'm confident that is the limiting factor). Basically a good DVD like the Fifth Element looks EXACTLY as good to my eye as a 1080i HDTV stream of the same...

Anyone Know When More 1080i Games Will Be Released?

For what it's worth, on my Samsung I DEFINITELY had to recalibrate and reconverge for a 1080i source (my PC with ATI component output adapter). Still need to do some focus work I think because text isn't as crisp as I'd like to see it.

    The Cult of Rez

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh! CURSE YOU PEOPLE. I had ignored Rez for a long time, and after reading this thread I decided I had to try it. Now I'm not sleeping, I'm late to work... I was standing 3' away from my RPTV for at least 15 minutes because as I walked up to turn of the PS2, I...

for computer graphics work : buy a new pc or just buy a quadro for my old pc?

What kind of graphics work are you doing?? The Quadro series are just rebadged GeForce cards with CAD-optimized drivers. If you do a little searching you will find that a quick tweak of the drivers will literally turn a MUCH cheaper GeForce card into the equivalent Quadro card.

I just have to say... WOW.

Well I guess I'm glad to hear I don't have a defective unit or absurdly low sensitivity speakers! I suppose it doesn't really matter, it's just strange to get used to. Back in the high school days of car stereo, it was supposed to be "so loud you can't even LISTEN to it above 50% volume" but...

I just have to say... WOW.

My setup WILL be: T500 L,R MC500 C S300 LR,RR MC300 CR The T500s have decently solid built-in subs, and I have an additional powered home-built sub based on a JBL 15" driver, bandpassed enclosure that only really picks up the 20-60Hz range, and it does that part VERY well. Currently...

I just have to say... WOW.

I know this isn't purely a speaker related post but I'm all excited and don't have anyone else to tell. I recieved my new speakers a couple weeks ago, a pair of Cambridge Soundworks Newton T500 towers (and all accompanying surround speakers, which are not yet in place). I connected them to my...

geometry - 480i vs. 480p - do I only get to pick one?

Thanks John, I imagine that would explain it. I'm sure the PS2 480P output is not the best reference point in the world. Last night I managed to get my PC hooked up through the ATI DVI-Component dongle and I still have a bit more overscan than I'd like but it's much more managable, regardless of...

geometry - 480i vs. 480p - do I only get to pick one?

Even for service-menu level settings? Image centering and size/overscan settings certainly seem to carry over from one source to another. Maybe I'm just paranoid. :) Or maybe when I did an initial reset it just screwed up all my settings and I haven't caught up with them for all my sources yet.

geometry - 480i vs. 480p - do I only get to pick one?

OK I am a complete N00B at this sort of thing, but I'm trying to learn and I've got a "reset" button so I don't mind messing with stuff. My tv is a Samsung RP, HCW(?)5515 or something close to that (never find a model number on these things after you buy them!). The vast majority of my...

    The time is NOW!!!!

I would seriously consider taking a look at the "open box / refurb" bin at Cambridge Soundworks (www.hifi.com) - they tend to sell returned items at slashed prices. I just bought a full 6.1 set including their top-end T500 tower speakers with built in dual 300W amplified subs, their top-line...

    Level ground for RPTV?

I have a similar question - my RPTV sits on a ledge inset into my wall about 20" off the floor, and with the directionality of RPTV screens, this results in a very dim image from a regular seated position. I can help the situation by blocking up the rear of the RPTV to tilt the entire screen...

    how valuable is ISF calibration?

Is there a strong demand for ISF calibrators? I mean, if so, the costs you're quoting are not absurdly high for starting one's own business, and would be an excellent job to do on an appointment basis to work around an odd schedule or something ...

    PS2 REMOVED from RPTV

I can't count the number of times I've come home to find that my wife has "paused" a dish network show and left it sitting for 45 or 90 minutes with that little "pause" icon sitting right on the edge of the screen. I try to explain the whole "burn-in" thing but to no avail. Solution: burn-in...

    Consumer Reports Issue covers RPTVs

Subjective??? SUBJECTIVE?? We're talking about CONSUMER REPORTS here! I want you to come into my home and tell me to my FACE that my TV does not perform "Red circle with white dot in the middle"!!! If you dare even imply that it's only up to "red semicircle" standards I will be...

    how valuable is ISF calibration?

Funny... I went and read the comments on KeohiHDTV site after posting here and apparently they used an automotive analogy too! I think the shipping and source-related comments are the real key; no amount of factory calibration will account for differences after it leaves the factory. Maybe we...

    Samsung convergence settings!

By the way - Service menu requires that you hold down the mute key, but convergence menu you do NOT hold it down. Button presses are sequential - mute, 1, 8, 3 Just wanted to make sure that's clear. :)

    PS2 REMOVED from RPTV

Newbie question here, but why do RPTVs burn-in and FPTVs not?

    Samsung convergence settings!

I know nobody asked for this, but without a service manual I had to spend WEEKS searching the internet for this information and finally found an obscure note in a post on a usenet newsgroup from 4 years ago. I figured I could summarize it and in the future anyone who runs a search on this site...

First Really Negative Review in Stereophile Guide to HT

I bet he forgot to polish his power cord before he tested these speakers! Problem solved! I don't like to worry too much about ANY subjective purchase based on one opinion... it was just SO contrary to everything I've heard that I got a little worried. And hey, if I don't like them it's an...

    Console modifications..

I believe particularly in the case of Xbox modding, there are a lot of legitimate reasons for modifications. I don't personally have an Xbox but as I understand, modding allows you to keep your games stored on the HD, move music files into the games from your PC, etc. All these strike me much...

First Really Negative Review in Stereophile Guide to HT

Wow, now I'm a little spooked! This is literally the very first negative thing I've been able to find on these speakers after searching intensively across the internet for a couple weeks of "should really be working" time. I just ordered the full T500 + center and surrounds set from Cambridge...
