The numbers on the spine re actually meaningless. They represent a number in a certain line of Fox dvds, sort of like criterion's spine numbers. I noticed these numbers on the recent two disc re-releases of cast away, independance day, abyss, sound of music, etc. I guess we can call it Fox's...
I have no use for Wal-Mart, Futureshop, Best Buy, etc. How can I respect any of these stores when they have no classic, western, or foreign sections (they're just mixed in - Dances With Wolves as a drama comes to mind). Futureshop mixes Criterion titles in with "special interest" items like...
Why wouldn't Criterion release anything in December? That makes no sense, seeing as December would be the time of year when people would be more apt to pay big bucks for a DVD gift.
I find it odd that here we are mid October and Criterion has only announced a few titles up to November 11th. Anybody heard of any news on December and January releases from them?
There are some descriptive subtitles such as when someone coughs you'll gee [coughing}] as a subtitle. But the text is not in black blocks, like closed captioning, it is just white text like regular subs. One small thing that does bother me - the second the screen cuts to black at the end...
I prefer the subtitles on the Canadian version, call me crazy. I own both and the Canadian version is much sharper than the US version. I had them both playing in sync side by side in split screen mode on my widescreen TV. True, there are no subs on the short film, and the commentary is in...
The Alliance version has MORE extras than the Lion's Gate version even listed that it had (short film, commentary), and the picture quality is much clearer and the subtitles are much better (crisp white, as oppossed to murky yellow.) For once Alliance actually delivers a superior version to...
Jon - I don't see the artwork anywhere on Criterion's site. Damin - Wow. I never noticed those titles didn't follow "my rule". It just seemed to me they always did, but you are right.
I think the Naked Lunch cover is either temporary or a fake. The two basic clues are 1) Criterion never puts "a film by ..." on their covers. It always reads "So-and-so's ...". In this case it would read "David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch." 2) They rarely use original poster art as they have...
A friend and I almost doubled over with laughter while watching the extras on Minority Report. EVERY single category - whether it be script, or effects, or stunts, or costumes - all ended up with Speilberg and Cruise masturbating each other. It's like the two of them got together over a series...
Oh, and by the way ... Alliance has just cancelled thier DVD for the upcoming "Good Thief". So that makes Irreversible, Spider, and The Good Thief all in a span of two weeks. Beauty.
Update of the worst kind for us folks in Canada. I ordered Irreversible as an IMPORT from amazon.ca. After a while of not shipping, I decided to check the website. GONE! Amazon.ca is not even offering the import for sale anymore! Has this film been outright banned in Canada!? I'm starting to...
Well ... I checked out the floor model in Sears and it wasn't displaying the same problems as mine. So I figured it's just a faulty set that I got. I ask if I can switch for a new set, same model. (Keep in mind I just bought this set in June). The manager says, "No. She wants a SECOND service...
Can I get a consensus of what the best RPTVs are in the 48 to 50 inch range. Not necessarily the most expensive, but the best quality for the best price. Thanks.
Well, The Sears technician came by today. Big help he was (sarcasm) He spent his visit telling me that my above mentioned problem is normal for RPTV, then he said I should move the TV away from the window (even though I kept telling him, I only watch the thing at night). Then I mentioned...
I just purchased a JVC 48" 16x9 set and I think it's totally defective. Has anybody heard of a problem where anytime a bright object moves on to a darker scene it throws a circular, almost lens flair blob of light up on the opposite side of the TV. Depending on where the light source is, it will...
I was told is it was outright cancelled. Not delayed. I'm assistant manager in a video store and got this news from our distributor rep. Also, same deal for "Spider". Cancelled.
Bad bad news. Not suprising given Alliance's recent track record. They're probably holding off to release a Pan and Scam version. But I haven't heard anything on the U.S. release. Is it still on? If so, I'll have to import it.
I actually sliced the palm of my hand open trying to get the DVD out of the metal case. Why can't Artisan ever get something right. If it's not a crappy transfer, or missing dialogue, it's pan and scam, or causing bodily harm to myself.
I just began watching the Canadian version about a half hour ago and had to STOP to write this. The picture quality, while crisp and clear, is NOT RIGHT. I don't know what the effect is called, but I have seen it before on the Stalker and The Criminal DVDs. The only way to describe it is, the...
Insomnia is actually a combination of Norwegian and Swedish. I believe the main character is a Swede visiting Norway, which is why there is the confusion about him carrying a handgun.
I work in a video store, and I ALWAYS do my best to convince a customer to go WIDESCREEN, but I NEVER say a word when they do have the WIDESCREEN. Either they know what they're buying, and have made a wise choice, or they just grabbed the WIDESCREEN not realizing it. But hey, ignorance is bliss...
