    720p on Panny RPTVs?

I'm pretty sure it's the tuner, not the TV, that's converting the 720p signal to 1080i. If you plugged an external 720p source into the Panny, it wouldn't take it.

Buy new hdtv now or wait a month or two?

If you want a direct-view, it doesn't seem to me that there's any reason to wait. Advances are being made in other display types (DLP, LCD, Plasma) that may make those sets cheaper, but direct-views probably aren't going to change much, price-wise or feature-wise, within the next several months...

    HDTVs that don't take 720p?

720p on a set that supports 720p is almost definitely going to look better than it would when it's converted to 1080i. However, as a person who owns a CRT RPTV that only takes 1080i, I can say that 720p converted to 1080i still looks great...just as good as native 1080i, if not better.

    HDTVs that don't take 720p?

Again, not that I know of. The Xbox doesn't do any format conversion so you'll either have to use standard-def mode or get a 720p native TV. (Some Xbox games use 1080i or 480p, so you could still make use of those.)

    TV Video questions

No, it really is upconverted to 720p or 1080i. That doesn't change the quality of the original image; it just scales it up so it matches the native resolution of the display. It's the same principle as taking an 8mm filmstrip and blowing it up to 35mm. The quality of the film is still exactly...

Dead pixel on my Sony Wega!

CRT TVs don't even have pixels. I wonder what that is. Maybe it's a problem with the surface of the screen, not the actual tube.

Progressive Scan in different view modes...

I have the Panasonic PT-47WX53, and while it locks into Full mode on 1080i HD material, it does allow you to choose among Full, 4:3, and Zoom on normal progressive scan material. The only option lacking in that mode is Just, which performs a combination of cropping and stretching to create a...

    Non DVD picture calibration

The Panasonics let you select a different mode for each source. The first time you switch to a different picture mode on a given source, it will always switch back to that mode whenever you switch to that source. I use Cinema for DVD, Standard for HD, and Vivid for satellite.

KP-46WT510-progressive signal from DVD looks worse

Your TV is better at progressive-scanning than the DVD player is. I don't know what brand your DVD is, but if it's a combination DVD/VCR, it's probably got a pretty cheap progressive-scanner (aka line doubler). You can keep it on interlaced, or get a superior DVD player (check the A/V Sources...

    Non DVD picture calibration

I used DVE to calibrate my DVD settings, copied those over to the satellite, and then adjusted them by eye while watching various programs.

Question on Components Inputs on HD Reday TV

Component video switchers are available; Best Buy sells one in the videogame section for about $100-150, and I'm sure there are others. Alternatively, you can buy a receiver that supports component video switching (these days, many receivers have this capability, even down to about the $200 range).

The future of Component 1080i inputs

I doubt it will be a problem. The players will never sell if they can't output HD video to the majority of HD sets. Right now the majority of HD sets in homes probably don't have DVI or HDMI, and that will likely still be the case when the players come out. I don't see how they can market these...

    Help please !! convergence adj..

How new is it? I have the PT47WX53, a very similar model, and in the first few weeks I had it I did have to adjust the convergence frequently (pretty much daily, actually). Now it's much more stable; I'll just do a quick run-through once in a while. If you've had the TV a long time and it's...

Smallest Sony TV that does vertical squeeze

I'm pretty sure that's the 27" Wega, model KV27-FS100. I own it, and it was my pride and joy until my recent purchase of a widescreen HDTV. Great picture, plenty of inputs, highly recommended.

ISF Video Cals: New England, South Cali, Florida, Chicago, OH, MI, WI, MN, Vegas

Hi Gregg, I'm in Los Angeles. I've got a 2-month old Panasonic PT-47WX53 that I'm considering having calibrated; presumably, by May it would be well past the recommended break-in period. What would the total fee be to calibrate the 480 i/p DVD input and a 1080i HD input and remove the glare...

Recommend me an affordable progressive scan DVD

Is there a list available of all the players that use the Faroudja chip? Based on what I've read, it seems like that's the primary element of a good progressive player.

    Schooled at Circuit City

I would argue that HDMI is a little different from DVD or HDTV, since it's not a format itself but simply a different method of transmitting the same material that we already have. And a few years ago, buying an HDTV would have been a dubious proposition given how much they cost at the time and...

Question about viewing distance and the calculator.

That should be fine, and you definitely don't have to worry about it being too close. I sit about 7 feet away from my 47" TV and it's just about perfect.

total tv noob here needing advice

The LCD screen would be a good choice for the Xbox since (1) it has a 720p native resolution and (2) you don't have to worry about burn-in. I've seen it in action and it has a very nice picture.

DVI vs. Component into a ED Plasma

Yes, the DVI connection should provide a better picture. From what I've heard, DVI makes no real difference on CRTs, but DOES make a difference on plasmas, LCDs, and DLPs since it's feeding a digital signal into a digital device with no analog conversion in between.

    PT53WX53 Problem

Thanks for sharing your problem...I have a PT47WX53, so I'll make sure to steer clear of any Toshibas if I upgrade to a 480p DVD player in the future.

Sitting 7 Feet away from a 100 inch screen...

I agree. I sit about 6 feet away from a 47" screen, and it's just about right. A 100" screen would be too big for your field of vision, plus the resolution limitations of both your projector and your source material would be hugely magnified.

    Getting VOOM and keeping DirecTv

Connect one of them via the component input. Since you'll probably be doing most of your HDTV watching on the Voom box, it probably makes more sense to use the DVI for that.

Poor picture quality from DBS on new TV

Welcome to the world of HDTV ownership, where everything short of DVD or hi-def looks horrendous. Just kidding. Sort of. Because your HDTV has much higher picture resolution, you're noticing all the flaws in the picture that you never noticed on a non-HDTV. There's no way to "fix" this...

    New Panny 53wx53 arrived yesterday!!!!!!!!!

http://www.panny.tv They have all the info. However, it is specific to older Panasonic models, so I've found some of the instructions aren't exactly the same; you kind of have to improvise.

    New Panny 53wx53 arrived yesterday!!!!!!!!!

I've had something similar to this, but with kind of a white glow protruding from the left side. I mainly see this on DVDs and HD. I figured it might be the convergence, but you seem to have that under control. I'm stumped too. I hope it's fixable. I'm taking another stab at the service menu...

Panasonic HD ready PT-47WX53 vs. Sony HD ready KP-46WT510

I've been very happy with that Panasonic model for the past month. Although I do plan on getting it calibrated once I've broken it in, the picture quality is stellar the majority of the time, especially on HD broadcasts. The built-in line doubler does a good job: DVDs look great, SD satellite TV...

    Component to Composite

Best Buy sells a component video switcher box for $99 in their video games section. It has component/composite/s-video inputs and outputs, but I don't know for sure whether it will convert one format to another. Perhaps the BB website can tell you more (sorry, I don't know the manufacturer name).
