I actually prefer the sound Q of analog over digital by a mile, but it's just not a convenient medium anymore. I'd like to have that old favorite music just as available to me as everything else I listen to, which is often off a computer or a portable digital format. The tradeoff I'm willing to...
I have a number of "old favorite" LPs and Cassettes (100s) I've hung onto that I would like to have converted to some digital format. Minimizing the loss of quality in the conversion isn't nearly as critical to me as convenience (not a lot of "touch-time") and fairly minimal cost. My audio...
There's a fairly detailed thread on the SD-P1200 on the AVS Forum. For the best picture I've seen on a portable, check out the Toshiba SD-P2000. I got it on an unadvertised special from OneCall for $561 shipped last week. It plays everything, including a XSVCD I burned straight from a...
We chose a portable DVD player - the Toshiba SD-P2000 to be exact. We had asked some of our friends that have had neither, and they almost all said they'd get a notebook. I guess that's why you ask people who have actually done it rather than those who have just thought about it. So far it...
I know many people have chosen a portable DVD player over a notebook PC for DVD playback and vice versa for various reasons. I'm at the point of trying to decide which one makes the most sense for us. The primary purpose for us will be for our kids (ages 7 and 4) to view videos while...
Depends on what you want to use it for. Back in '84 when I had a choice between a non-GUI PC or a Mac, I chose the PC for flexibility, while many chose the Mac. When I had a choice between the Replay and the TiVo, I chose the Replay for the same reasons. If you really care about easily...
Terrific player! Built better than the Denon 1600 with PQ equal (IMO - based on everything I could throw at it) to that of the highly regarded RP82. Only two drawbacks are that is has no power on/off via the remote and no time remaining display. Tim
For Christmas I got my wife our second ReplayTV, a 4508 (80 hour) for $199 after rebates from Costco. She says over and over how great it is. Using it with DVArchive and a 120GB drive on my computer, I have two recorders and three players and the ability to offload commercial-free programs to...
I just fulfilled the requirements for "Universal's January 2003 Free DVD Offer", having purchased "About A Boy" and "The Bourne Identity". I thought it was very odd that "About A Boy" only had one Proof of Purchase tab, while "The Bourne Identity" had TWO. Does anybody know if there's another...
If you're not going to take advantage of progressive scan, I couldn't recommend the Panasonic CP72. Its interlaced picture is average at best, and the remote is awful. Mine is currently working perfectly but I'm planning to return it because of concerns that it might not last 6 months. The...
I also had the Toshiba SD-3109. The jump in audio and video quality was tremendous. In fact I couldn't tell the difference between it and the Panasonic CP72 on any material I threw at it. The CP72 has what most people consider to be equal PQ to the RP82, but it also suffers from many occurances...
Interesting. Costco has such a good return policy, I will probably buy one just to try it out. I can only hope they will have addressed the remote, but I don't expect it. Primarily, I'm curious how the new progressive scan deinterlacer will stack up to the Faroudja they are no longer using...
No indication that they'd know anything about the chroma bug or the flicker bug. It's apparent that they're primarily looking at user-friendliness and perceivable build quality. Naturally, these are criteria that are the most subjective and would not be reflected at all on the Secret's Shootout...
The JVC website says the FA900BK is 17-11/16" deep, but most other player's actual dimensions are shorter than their published dimensions. Does anybody know what the actual depth is from the front of the tray to the back of the box, not including the connectors? My cabinet has 16-3/8" to work...
For equal dollars, I would venture to say that most RP82 owners would gladly take a Denon 3800. You can put my name on the list. Starting to hear some real good things about the new Yamaha S2300 as well. Tim
Okay, I learned a little more for you fromhere. I know this thread is about the Denon 900, but the 1805 is basically a 5-disc 900. You might want to note that DenonJeff says it does not have the chroma bug, has CCS turned off, but doesn't play VCDs. Hope this helps, Tim
It's based on the Denon 900. Has the inferior mpeg decoder of the Panasonic RP62. No DVD-Audio. Much better player for the same price is the Yamaha C920/C6480, but it has no remote power on/off. Tim [edit] Okay, now I remember what the problem was. The mpeg decoder used on the Denon...
Another vote for Logic 7 over PLII. What receiver do you have now? Does it have any alternate DSP modes? PLII is definitely better than PL, but many synthetically processed sound modes are. Tim
Regarding audio "sweet spots", I can't imagine that the receiver will have nearly the affect that your speakers do. I definitely recommend that you seriously consider the HK. IMO, the high current receivers have a uniquely clean and accurate sound. Have fun, Tim
For DVD players, you might want to read up on the Panasonic XP30, but do it quick bacause they are jumping off the shelves following their top score on the most recent Secret's progressive player shootout. Tim
My HK AVR-325 has a fan, but I've never heard it or seen it run (looking through the back grill with a flashlight). It's in a glass-doored cabinet with 4-5" of clearance above it. Tim
Stacey, Thank you for the above post. You are right on and put it in a way that should make it easy to understand! I've seen way too much misunderstanding espoused when it comes to describing a DVD player's digital audio output. I think your post should be read by everyone on the forum. Tim
Where does quality of build and staying power and ergonomics fit into the "performance" characteristics? To some of us, PQ is only ONE of the performance characteristics we're looking for. I have a perfect CP72 that I'm likely to return because I want something that will last more than a year...
