Very good picks. 300 watts should be plenty for the Assassin12. Give Chad of Ascendant Audio a call or e-mail him. I believe that he could give you some recommended enclosures for our friend's sub (don't think they available anymore on the site). Of course you can also do a sonotube. Also, I...
Another alternative would be to get something like an Ascendent Audio Assassin 12 for $90 and pair it with a PE SA100 100-watt amp for $90. It's little bit over his budget though. Do a sealed sonotube for a few dollars more and you've got a decent sub. Ideally, if you can convince your friend...

Derek, Here is the link to the PE amp modification. I hope that it's still active. If it's not, let me know. I have a hard copy of it and I can send it to you. Let us know how it all turns out. Cheers! http://maxhawk.bravepages.com/projects/subwooferamp/
I also agree that the Tempest is a good driver and you can still achieve most of what you're looking for with it. I just wanted to make you aware of some of the alternatives that are out there which may or may not be a cost effective option for you. Owen's response graph illustrates the room's...
If you're looking for really strong response in that range with a sealed sub, you could try a LT circuit. Also keep in mind that the software will not tell you how your sub will perform in your room (placement, room dimensions and room gain effect that). I still think that you will be ok with...
Derek, If enclosure size isn't an issue, I belive that you may want to try Adire's Bessel alignment (Q=0.577 in a 230L cabinet). If it is an issue, you could try the Butterworth alignment (Q=0.707 in a 122L cabinet). I previously used my Tempest in a 214L ported alignment. It produced a whole...
I am the original owner of his 5.1 receiver. It is rated @110w/ch and is from a smoke free home. Dolby Pro Logic (not a PLII), DTS and DSP modes. Comes with the Sony LCD learning remote. I have the original shipping box and all instruction manuals/documentation. $150 plus shipping.-SOLD!
I went that route as well. My circuit was still a little sluggish - must be particular to my unit. I listen at some fairly low levels and with the bypass engaged I have the sub on all the time and I don't have it turning off when there are long "quiet" passages during my movies.
I was experiencing some auto turn-on sensitivity problems with a recently purchased a PartsExpress #300-806 500-watt sub amp. The PE is a pretty good plate amp with plenty of power to drive my AVA15 driver. In it's stock form, the PE amp's auto turn-on circuit worked pretty good with most HT...
