I always wondered why they didn't use a 'scope logo originally and instead stretched a 4x3 version. Was this unique to Die Hard or has it happened on other Fox releases? I know I've seen the 1.85 Paramount cropped to 'scope quite a bit.
No, it was not replaced -- just as it's always has been...
Haven't seen this referenced yet... In regards to the vintage documentaries: 1. The Making of Star Wars: Is the narrator William Conrad as in the original airing and home video releases or is it the narrator from the 1997 re-release? 2. SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back: Are the Disney clips...
I have the original complete series boxset, and there were some video problems with most (but not all) of the episodes. Originally I thought they were just time compressed (for syndication I guessed) masters that incorrectly made their way onto the discs, but now I realize it might be a 3:2...
Thought I'd relate my "30th Anniversary" Star Wars viewing experience... I was honestly hoping to find an independent theatrical screening of the original, non-SE version of Star Wars (I remember being excited to hear of such a screening a few years ago in L.A. only to be informed at the last...
Hi all: Has anyone ever had any luck getting DirecTV to address overcompression problems with one of its SD channels? Ever since the 1st of the year VH1 Classic (channel 337) has been macroblocking horribly, and my hardware shows the average bitrate dropped from between 2 and 2.25 Mbps to...
Hi all: I'm going to shop for a laserdisc player on eBay, and I'd like to get some suggestions on desirable models based on the following criteria: Must: - Be manufactured by Pioneer - Pass the native composite video signal from the laserdisc to the composite output (i.e. the...
I can't remember exactly where or when, but some cynical sci-fi mag had an actual timeline of contradictory George Lucas quotes on things like the number of films in the saga (starting shortly after the release of the first film with Empire being just a regular "sequel" and with no talk of 9, 12...
Hi all:
I'm just getting ready to start watching Voyage on DVD; can anyone suggest a preferred viewing order -- airdate vs. production? I assume the order on the DVDs is airdate, but as with Star Trek is there any compelling reason to go with production order instead?
Thanks!
Hi all: How about some thoughts about a paragraph from the January / February 2006 issue of The Perfect Vision (quoted below)? It's from the Toshiba 62HM195 1080p DLP RPTV review by Randy Tomlinson on page 62. Enjoy! "DLP and plasma are the only fully digital display technologies available...
Hi all: It is my understanding that the post-production for the post-TOS Trek series (i.e. TNG, DS9, and Voyager) was initially done on SD video, making a future HD release of several seasons of these series unlikely (unless effects are recomposited, etc.). My question is this: Exactly when...
This shouldn't be too far off-topic, and this seemed like a good place to ask... I picked up a Pioneer LD-S9 LD player last year (brand-new in the box!) and have been using it mainly to deliver video and PCM audio to my PC's video capture and sound cards. I understand the issues behind using...
I'm So Excited was in the theatrical version and in most Pay TV showings and some (I think) home video versions. I think it's even listed in the end credits of every version regardless. It's how I first remember seeing it, and it fits the scene so well that I find it distracting when it's not...
Hi all: Is the new National Lampoon's Vacation DVD rescored to replace "I'm So Excited" by the Pointer Sisters during the Christie Brinkley / Ferrari scenes? Most video versions (including the previous R1 full-frame DVD) have this change, but I hope they got the rights this time around...
I've been going through the DVD Discoveries disc, but it's a little awkward because I cannot access the disc menu. I have a Sony 7000, and have encountered this before (but not recently). Still, I can access the content by using direct title access. Some of the docs don't have titles though, so...
Just watched the R2 Towering Inferno from WB. It is indeed 16x9 (and looks really good), but only has a DD 2.0 surround track instead of the 5.1 track Fox apparently sprung for on the R1 release (according to IMDB; I don't own that disc). So if you're R2 capable, you basically have a choice...
I mentioned this as part of a thread on Trick or Treat, but wanted to further share my experience with this DVD. For the uninitiated, The Wraith is a decidedly guilty pleasure from 1986 starring Charlie Sheen, Sherilyn Fenn, Randy Quaid, and Nick Cassavetes about a mysterious entity that wreaks...
FWIW, Towering Inferno is available 16x9 enhanced from Warner in Japan (Region 2, NTSC). Decent quality and reasonably priced as I recall (unusual for Japanese DVD), but with no extras save for maybe a trailer. I think I got mine from Laser Exchange, but I don't know if it's still in print. If...
Hi all: Long story short: Picked up the Cyberhome CH-500 "region-free" player (based on the $50 after rebate price and raves about its PAL-NTSC conversion ability) and the R4 release of one of my all-time favorite films, (ahem) Ford Fairlane. Not having experienced PAL video playback...
