Official DVD ETC. review request thread -- request equipment reviews here!

In the AVS Forum there is an on-going debate between the Denon 5900 (I know, soon to be replaced) and the Pioneer 59 AVI Universal DVD players. It would be interesting to do a head-to-head piece on these players (or the 5910 which is probably impossible right now). Having said that, the...

Official DVD ETC. review request thread -- request equipment reviews here!

Why not scoop everyone and do the new EAD universal player due to be released in May/June. A Digital video out player that can hook directly to your amps sounds interesting.

    Film screens

Clay, I like the 10000 very much. I do not know what the difference is in the 12000. I have never heard a bad comment on either projector. Neil, Have you compared the two screens side to side or back-to-back, or whatever. I am sure the higher gain screen will have a brighter more...

    Film screens

I have a Sharp 10000U and am using a Draper fixed screen. It's a low gain screen (like .85 or .90 I think???). I like it for the price (dirt cheap), but don't really have anything to compare to. I would say that Stewart is the industry standard that everyone seems to compare themselves to. That...

Any chance of getting the new Integra and/or Integra Research Universal players. They have yet to hit the market, but look like they could be promising in the high-end segment. For that matter the matching new Integra research Pre/pro too.

    Easy does it folks.

    Is DVI really that good?

Somewhere in the discussion of the new DVDO HD scaler in the AVS Forum, Dale Adams of DVDO went over the DVI resolution issue. I can't recall it exactly, but I would trust what he had to say about a DVI connection carrying a 480 i or p signal. Honestly - I don't remember it clear enough to say...

    How about a Universal Transport - ! ?

Nick, you have missed it, but Jeff you see my point though. Like in video, wouldn't changing back and forth from analogue to digital keep hurting the sound. I guess if the player had a good bass management you be OK, but not many do that I am aware of. I know Integra Research's new Pre/Pro...

    How about a Universal Transport - ! ?

Does anyone make a universal DVD-A, DVD-V, CD, and SACD player with only digital outputs? I would think it would be a way for manufacturers to simplify a system (with all D/A conversion going on in the Processor), and sell more pieces to customers, all the while creating a sort of forced...

    Is DVI really that good?

Hey, one more thing, and relative to the original post. DVI does not carry any audio where HDMI does. So, if you are running a FP, then HDMI is not really needed, just the digital video since your processor should be handling the audio.

How is the Samsung DVD-HD931 ?

Anyone tried this player and it's DVI output?

    Is DVI really that good?

Paul - No biggy, I have been looking into a lot of companies which get actual recommendations. It never hurts to look. Alan - I believe DVI has some Copy Protections attached, but I am not sure about SDI. Also, a DVD player cannot output a 480 i/p signal from a DVI out (so I am told) due to...

Paul, I just went to bluejeans and did not see any DVI. Can you provide a direct link?

    Is DVI really that good?

I would have just gotten the cold sweats if my issue centered on the glare, but there were other issues too.

    Is DVI really that good?

I will start this by saying that I have no direct experience with DVI cable lengths...but the link below is to one company that claims up to 50 foot lengths of their cable will work well. DVD ETC. verified this using a Bravo player...I think. http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI_cables.html...

    DVI cable length limit

BTW- the Lexicon RT-10 can be modified to have an SDI output, and the new DVDO iScan HD is said to be discussing a SDI upgrade option. Could be a powerful (yet expensive) combination.

    DVI cable length limit

I have found that although the onboard de-interlacer of the 10K is good, the progressive outs of my players have been better. It is mostly noticeable on poor quality DVDs. My players have been good ones (Theta Carmen II and now a Lexicon RT-10) both have different video guts even though they are...

    DVI cable length limit

For what it is worth, I have ordered a 23 foot (7.5 meter) cable from RAM. I will post what I find next week. I hope it's long enough - they have a 30 day return policy.

Good to hear you got it covered. I am contacting my kid's school to see if they need anything. Could be a good source to place good but outdate equipment.

    DVI cable length limit

Thanks Arthur, So I guess the question is: How can someone using a projector take advantage of a DVI connection? Many Projector installations have the projector mounted to the ceiling, in the middle or back of the room. Boy - talk about dangling a carrot in front of you. BTW: I...

    DVI cable length limit

The big question...what is a good cable? It stinks when you buy something, run it, then find out it is no good (or just as bad - something else is better), then remove it to return it, if you even can. What is a known good cable for a 30' run? Preferably something someone has had a...

    DVI cable length limit

I actually don't have the scaler yet. It is an anticipated upgrade if/when the situation is right. DVDO just announce a new product. A sort of upgrade to the Ultra which will input and output HD and include scaling options. At any rate,I would like to run a high quality DVI cable soon for...

    DVI cable length limit

I am in almost the exact same boat, so I don't want your question to move too far down the postings. My run is about 25 feet to my sharp 10000. I will be going out of an outboard de-interlacer/scaler, but eventually - like you I am sure - I will have a HD tuner and a DVD utilizing the DVI...

    Cooling fan with termostat

One easy cheap thermostat is available from any home depot. It is used for attic ceiling exhast fans. It is 120V and adjustable. You can wire the 12V fan after the thermostat, and mount the thermostat where you think it would be the hottest in the cabinet. It is: Master Flow Model PT6...

    Universal CD/DVD Player

Indeed the DV-50 seems to set the standard right now. Is it upgradeable at all? Even though there does not seem to be any processors yet available to accept a multi-channel digital connection, it would be nice to see this as an upgrade option on the new players coming out. And DVI as well...
