I can't imagine buying a receiver to drive shakers other than a used one. Are there any stores near you that sell used equipment? If not, I'd look at a couple of smaller sub plate amps. I happened to have an old Realistic receiver that is still going strong. http://www.timn8er.com/bass_shakers.htm
I'd been using the Extremis in a two-way design prior to this. I demo'd it at a local audio club meeting along with my little bookshelf. They were both well received and I was told that if I could get the highs of the bookshelf out of the two-way it would be wonderful. At the same time I had...
The Extremis 6.8 has an exceptionally stable impedance across a large portion of it's frequency range. So much so that two Extremis wired in parallel have a nominal impedance far above 4 ohms. Much of it is around 7 ohms. I'll leave it to you whether or not that is suitable for your amp. For...
I second the Extremis based builds. The Extremis is a world class driver and at $99 it's a serious bargain. I can't think of a 6.5" driver that can touch it and that includes the $200+ DST drivers. I built a two-way with a Morel tweeter that hit -3db at 36 Hz! What's just as amazing is that...
If you like the PE boxes and would prefer that over building from scratch I suggest looking for designs that will fit in that box size. Minor volume changes (say 10%) will not have a major impact and can sometimes even be compensated by changing the port. Check the Madisound website for Morel...
I don't understand why that's surprising. Treated paper cones are stiff and light. It's a nearly ideal material. There are plenty of tweeters that can reach 50K.
Yep, brand new. Based on the WR125S XBL^2 powered driver developed for Creative Sound Solutions by Adire Audio. Tweeter is the Fostex FT207D. Cabinets are very good quality. You could easily go without a sub initially. Granted, it's not going to hit the 20's but it will get below 50Hz.
I just set up a 6.1 system for someone using these. http://www.us.alegriaaudio.com/Ling.htm http://www.us.alegriaaudio.com/LingSingle.htm Here's what he had to say: "I own three of the Ling and three of the Ling single. I am using them in my Home Theater with a down firing Adire DPL12...
The Visaton B200 is quite popular amongst the "full-range" and "open-baffle" crowd. It is supposed to be quite enjoyable in OB and is usually accompanied by a large woofer in the same baffle, similar to the Eminence Beta series woofers. You can imagine what size baffle we're talking about (~48"...
If you don't have tools now you should consider whether or not to start buying them. If this is to be your only project then the cost is absolutely not worth it. In this case, get a kit. If you're certain to be building lots of stuff (even other than speakers) get a table saw and a router for...
