Ideally, where should the rear speakers be placed to get the best sound and effect out of them? facing forward.....facing in.....facing up or down.....behind?.....the ceiling??????

Currently my rear speakers are at shoulder height, facing in, and inline with the listeners head. Should they be up higher pointing down........or up higher facing in towards the listener........or same height and behind??????
