'Beneath the 12 Mile Reef' - Best Version?

I should add that the stereo track was Dolby encoded, but NOT direct 4-track sound. Because the film is public domain, lots of companies have copied our master. Jeff

'Beneath the 12 Mile Reef' - Best Version?

This was ours. That is, we did a gorgeous 2.55 letterboxed stereo (2 track) laserdisc for LumiVision (later Slingshot). They later used that same master for DVD. So if it says "5.1", it isn't. Nor is it "anamorphic", since the master was done for laserdisc, not DVD. That said, it's by far the...

The "Animal Crackers" footage we have is MultiColor, a precursor to CineColor. It is NOT 2-color Technicolor. Jeff

Laurel And Hardy - 21 Disc Box Set !

I don't believe "Babes in Toyland" is the public domain, at least in the U.S. It's owned by WPIX-TV, which sold/leased it to Goldwyn/MGM. Jeff Joseph SabuCat Productions

    Great Kiss Me Kate news!

To the best of my knowledge, this was the only time. There were exactly 50 features shot in English in the "Golden Age" of 3-D, starting with "Bwana Devil" and ending with "Revenge of the Creature". In putting this Expo together, I've learned this: Each feature and each short has it's own...

    Great Kiss Me Kate news!

No, Greg, it was like this: All of the original 35mm dye transfer prints had these scenes cut into them for 3-D release. The prints were at some point split up and the scenes were therefore also in the 2-D "release". Until 10 years or so ago, MGM/Turner HAD a dye transfer print...

    Great Kiss Me Kate news!

As many of you know, we're running "Kiss Me Kate" in dual projector Polaroid 3-D (and stereophonic sound!) on Saturday, September 13th, at 7:00 PM, as part of the amazing World 3-D Film Expo in Hollywood. But: We just found out... Warners has found the so called "missing" footage... the...

    Warner's Kiss Me Kate Mis-Framed

And just a final note: Both Kiss Me Kate and House of Wax will be screened... in 35mm double interlock... at the 3-D Film Expo in September. This is the way to see both films. 33 Features and 21 shorts! http://www.3dfilmfest.com Thanks, Jeff

    Warner's Kiss Me Kate Mis-Framed

Bob is totally correct. Neither the Vagabond or Tiffany theatres were ever set up to run with a mag dubber. 4-track mag, yes, but not with a dubber. And "Kate" could have only been in stereo with a dubber. It has not run in stereo in Los Angeles in 50 years. Jeff Joseph SabuCat Productions...

    Technicolor tribute in Hollywood

Yes indeed. Permission from the studios, the Fire Department, and UCLA. Then we need to reinstall the fire equipment on the projectors (they don't fit with the digital stuff), which is why we do them all in one day. Jeff Joseph

Almost positive it's 133 minutes. Jeff

Porgy & Bess released from rights limbo?

No, that print of "Porgy" that you are referring to went bad (vinegar syndrome) and has been destroyed. This is a different print, in excellent shape. And to the best of my knowledge, it is the last surviving dye-transfer Technicolor 4-track stereo print. Jeff

Porgy & Bess released from rights limbo?

Sorry, I don't know about the international rights on this. I presume that the Gershwin estate controls it world wide. Jeff

Porgy & Bess released from rights limbo?

There are still rights issues with this title. We got special permission from the Gershwin estate, Goldwyn, and MGM to do this one screening. It's a superb dye-transfer 35mm print...possibly the last one in existence. Jeff

    4-track mag stereo festival

Yes, but the "virgin" print was the short version. Edited into it were a couple of found musical numbers and other footage, but the film is still incomplete by around 15 minutes, I think. By the way, that "virgin" print has since gone to vinegar and is no longer runable. Jeff

    4-track mag stereo festival

I've been screwing around with this stuff (old, lost films) for quite awhile now. Here's something I've learned: Unless it's accessible in some manner, it does not exist. I hear stories frequently about various films that exist "somewhere". Usually they turn out to be just that: Stories. Whether...

    4-track mag stereo festival

Actually, I'm not sure how "decent" the surviving print is of "Oklahoma!" in 70mm. I suspect it's pretty beat up by now... I saw it about 10 years ago and it was not that great even then. I do not believe that the uncut "South Pacific" exists in any format. Jeff

    4-track mag stereo festival

Oklahoma! prints: 1 35mm optical sound 1 35mm 3-track (no surround) mag/optical A few years later, 2 70mm 30 fps prints were struck, one of which still survives. 70mm mag (6-track) did not die the same death as 35mm 4-track. Every once in awhile, a print is still made in this format...

    4-track mag stereo festival

Prior to 1983, most non-Technicolor film stocks faded. And since most mag stereo films were released in the 50’s and 60’s, well, most of them have faded as well. All original prints of “Journey to the Center of the Earth” are now red (if they exist at all). In late 1982, Kodak introduced “LPP”...

    4-track mag stereo festival

I want to emphasize that "Journey to the Center of the Earth" is NOT a faded print. It's an LPP mag print struck in England in 1983...basically the last year mag was made and the first year LPP was made. A very very rare print (as are, in fact, most of the prints in this series). Jeff

    4-track mag stereo festival

The tribute to 35mm 4-track mag stereo starts November 29th for 2 weekends at the American Cinematheque (The Egyptian Theatre) in Hollywood. All features are either dye-transfer Technicolor or LPP EastmanColor. Here's the link to the complete schedule...

Does anyone know what classic films are currently being restored?

No, I think it's 2 reels of the film, not the prolog and credits. Jeff

Does anyone know what classic films are currently being restored?

Unfortunately, they will NOT be running a 70mm print of "Around the World in 80 Days" at the Academy next month. The "restoration" of the film is being done for video, not film release. The Academy screening will be a 35mm dye-transfer Technicolor 1968 optical mono print, synced up with a...
