I got mine on Friday. Have about 9 hours of use on it so far. 98" diag on my screen. Right-side-up ceiling mounted. About 15-16 feet away from the screen. Viewing distance is 9-10 feet ,(yeah...I know...to close). Running HDTV and 1080i/720p DVD signal over component. Upgrading from a Mitz 55"...
I will add, that, the vast majority of the time, I generally agree with the opinions of the reviewers here at HTF. And I say that not as some sort of attack at Michael. This particular movie just really surprised me when I compared my personal experience with those of the reviewer's...
Michael, My display is a 55" Mitz HDTV. (16:9). The artifacts and jerky background occured on both the JVC and LiteOn. I've re-watched some of the scenes again to see if my imagination (or the 3 Vodka tonics I drank that evening) had an effect on what I saw...but nothing...
Very good review. Thank you much. That said, may I ask if there is ANYONE out there who did not like the video transfer? On both my Liteon and JVC players, I noticed a *great* amount of artifacts in the background of many scenes. I literally said to myself, 'Boy, I bet HTF really trashes...
Hello all. Thought I would post this...just in case it's usefull to someone else. About 3 weeks ago, my beloved 2001 began having problems with disc reading. I would unload the DVD, and load it back in, and all would be well. However, this weekend, it just completely died. DVD's would...
Robert, Oh yeah...whoops...my bad. I mis-read Chris's post. I was thinking he was talking about video component cables, not Toslink. You're right....I can't imagine any kind of inteference with a Toslink cable.
Robert, I tried un-screwing the grounding wire on my shielded IDE cable and could detect no visible difference. However, I did re-attach it before I put the 2001 back together. You, know....because it would just bug me if I didn't. :) Chris, I have those same cables. Head to head...
Actually...to completely geek-out here....a cool trick we learned in high-school chem. class was to scratch a penny through the copper into the nickel. Then heat up the penny over a bunsen (spelling?) burner. The nickel melts first, and drains out the hole...leaving a hollow copper shell. Do...
Copper shields *slightly* better than aluminum...although, according to them,(the EE's) for practical purposes, they are basically the same. Of course, by far the best 'Shielder' is gold!!! $150 for the 2001. $15 for the upgraded cable. $20,000 for internal shielding!! :)
Yeah, Jay....wasn't try to knock you in my previous post. Sorry if it came accross that way. I am unsure exactly what shields better....copper or aluminum. I'll ask one of our Electrical Engineers here at the office what they think.
I can't think of anything easier or cheaper than replacing the IDE cable. Start to finish takes about 5-6 minutes. Other than that, my guess is that any other mods probably don't really effect much of anything. Jay seems to have gone all out with his experimentation....which is good for him...
JohnnyG: Well, I to have been in the technology business for about 17 years now. I currently run an IT department for a 60 million dollar company. So, here's my theory: 2 things are interesting to note. #1: PS electronics in the 2001 are, by default, completely unshielded. #2: The...
OK, gang. I actually had a few folks email me requesting the 2001 Cable swapping pics. Soooo...I made a quick web page. Here you go for those all interested: http://tuckercentral.nventure.com/2001.html I make no claims to quality!! Cheers, John
Al, Tomorrow evening I'll take a couple pictures of what I did and email directly to you. However, like Eric said, it's very NON-technical. I would suggest you simply take your 2001 apart first to have a look. 2 screws on each side. Couple screws in the back and one screw in the bottom...in the...
This is a 4 1/2 year old 5.1 receiver. 80 WPC. Never ran subs....only surrounds. Perfect condition....both cosmetically and operationally. Original manuals, remote and receipt. Still has 1/2 year or so of original warranty. I replaced this unit with a Sony 4ES for the 7.1 capability. Like I...
Yeah...I watched X2 and Fifth Element Superbit last night and was extremely impressed. Eric...I agree with you...I think that this improvement I'm seeing is being caused by the improved shielding....not by some magic cable voodoo. Just to make sure my own enthusiasm wasn't getting the best of...
Jay Blair (and others): I was out running errands today and thought I would zip into the local Circuit City to see if they had any shielded IDE/133 cables. Sure enough they did. "Cobra Cable" brand shielded with a grounding strap. So I bought it. $16 after tax. Got home. Took apart the...
Jay, Interesting about the cable. Since I run an IS Dept, I think I'll have to get a few of those in to 'test' out. ;) Eric, By and large, I completely agree with you. However, at under ~$20 or so, it's worth an experimentation. Anyone willing to pay +$100 a foot for any kind of cable...
Jay... I'm pretty sure that 'ghosting' effect is supposed to be there. I see it also with my Panny S35 and JVC N55. Others: The Liteon does seem to be much more sensitive to scratchy DVD's than others. I've had 2 rented (and pretty scratched up) DVD's that wouldn't play in my 2001....but...
David, Oh yeah...wow. My bad. Talk about false advertising. They specifically say that the 2002 does the 1080i upsampling. Gonna be some PO'd Ebay buyers out there....
Jonny, Well...I'm not going to argue at all against the science of the whole thing. No argument from me on your observations. The 2001 is my 6th DVD player this year and 10th overall. All of the players sound just a little different from each other. Like I said...it's nothing...
Kevin, I think the 2001 has EXCELLENT sound. My reference DVD for sound, (always has been, and still is to this day), is the Eagles:Hell Freezes Over DVD. The DTS soundtrack on that disc is just mind-numbingly good. I'm running 6.1 out of a Sony 4ES. I've got the 2001 and a JVC N50BK...
There are some guys on the AVS forum who've received emails from LiteOn support stating that it was planned to have the 3.01 beta out for only a few days, and that the live version will be out shortly. Who knows???????? I was able to get my color settings *mostly* in-line after adjusting...
