HD-DVD will not be like laserdisc. Why? Because people are buying HDTV's. And they are buying more and more. They will go for HD-DVD because they just spent $1500+ on a television set and they want to get their money's worth. As long as players can be had for less than $300, HD-DVD is in business.
Hey, I'm here to tell ya that money isn't really a huge issue with home theater. I've got a 27" zenith HDTV, cost just $500 and the thing delivers all the detail a DVD has to offer. I've even got it calibrated with DVE. I am very interested in things like edge enhancement or any other transfer...

Certainly worth it. Sometimes we see non-anamorphic and imagine something horrible. I think that if a good percentage of this forum looked at the movie in anamorphic and then in letterbox they wouldn't see much difference as far as quality is concerned. Obviously though it is a convenience issue...
That Sanyo is about the lowest quality you can get(build and features are bare minimum). For $360 you can go to BestBuy.com and pick up a Toshiba 32" 32a33 with free shipping(if you live within so many miles of a store). It's the cheapest of the Toshiba line but Toshiba makes the best non-flat...
It's kind of a strange question. I mean, you've got your taste in films, and everyone's different. You've got mostly mainstream films from all genre's so it's hard to make recommendations. If you haven't already, try more artsy films. The last four DVD's I've watched are Ali: Fear Eats the...
I wouldn't recommend it unless you're planning on setting your HD on a low resolution like 640x480. If you have a good graphics card like most radeons and some of the newer GeForces youy may be able to output HD resolutions like 1080i, but even there consumer grade sets will be too fuzzy to read...
Did you try 960x540p? I assume you have a graphics card that can do interlaced resolutions like 1080i; not all of them can. The most popular for this sort of application seems to be ATI Radeon cards with current drivers. I mention it because I have an older ATI rage card and can't get anything...
A friend of mine is buying an RPTV and I know little about them(I'm more into direct view sets). She's looking at spending $1900 or less and the size should be around 50" widescreen, give or take a few inches. I would like a good, reliable set with DVI. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
You still have some options. First, go to a directv outlet or home theater store and see what a regular signal looks like through the HD receiver. You should do this because it will be a while before most channels are HD. I did hear something about the History channel and some other new ones...
How're you gonna "dump" it? I can't see any possibilities that don't leave you with a big loss. If you can afford an ISF calibration for 15% of your watching, then you should be able to do as they suggested and get HD service or get a good line doubler for your regular viewing. Don't mean to...
Not even if you're TV could benefit from the new players that output 1080i via DVi would a scaled dvd rival hdtv. It would look great, but still pale in comparison to true HD, especially when using a non-reference dvd.
I have a feeling your DVD player is set to output 4:3(regular size). You need to go into the DVD player's options and select 16:9(widescreen). Make sure the DVD you test it with says "enhanced for 16:9 TV's" or "anamorphic." From your post I gather that you understand this point but I just...
Yes,there is no competition for watching DVD's. On regualar TV, an analog TV might be preferrable to many. To me it really makes no difference. This set will bring out the artifacts on a cable or satellite signal, but it won't look bad if you had a good signal. Watching tv today, dishnetwork, I...
I took a C27V22 home today, got it from circuitcity.com they've got it for $499 plus $50 off TV's $399+, so I got it for $450. Even free shipping if you live within 50 miles, I did not. I ordered on Saturday, this week the $50 off may be done, but you do get a $50 gift card, useful if you need...
The salesman probably thought you were talking about "composite" inputs, meaning he thought you didn't have the yellow RCA plug and only the ancient RF TV antenna plug. When what you really meant to say was that you didn't have "component" inputs(3 video plugs, red, green, and blue). You are...
Is it part of their txn line? I had a txn2745fp and it had a similar problem; samsung knew nothing about it and wanted me to take it to a service center 2 hours away. Other people I saw on the AVS forum had this vertical band problem and to my knowledge Samsungs never successfully fixed theirs...
I would say that the Zenith C27V36 would be your best bet at this time. No reason to go with an analog set at this point when for about $150 more you can go HD, and it will make a world of difference. Samsung has some smaller sets too but I myself tried the TXN2745fp and it had serious quality...
It looks like you came out OK anyway. I would consider making the best of it by updating to HD-DVD. Many people are a little worried that their collections will become obsolete; you don't have that problem now.
You have my sympathy. I hope the insurance will take care of nearly all of them, and give you cash for those OOP. I've lost a couple hundred dollars worth of video games to theives myself, and it made me mad. For me, the annoyance of it wore off in a month; yours is a much bigger deal, but I...
My Library is probably a much like Stephen_J_H's, in that they have a small collection with quality films; mostly Criterions and notable American films. Maybe 40. I think this is the best thing a library can do, and I have yet to see a scratch. They're always in :D. Today I'm going to get "M"...
Great ones include Cinema Paradiso, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Walkabout, The Color Purple, Dreams(Akira Kurasawa), Great Expectations(David Lean), Perfect Storm, Days of Heaven, Spartacus, The Good, Bad, and the Ugly, and Once Upon a Time in the West.
Yes, certainly the guy the poster was referring to was very strange, and probably was never a real movie critic as we'd think of one, but the majority of P&S watchers are not this way at all. It hadn't been too bad on this topic, but topics like this are always popping up and there's always a...
Of course, this particular guy was a little eccentric, but I agree with most of what Mika has said. Many people have much more productive things to do in life than watch movies, and they are not stupid, they are not idiots, and they are not trying to take away our precious widescreen DVD's. They...
I'd stay away from movies that mention religeon at all. Certainly nothing controversial like LToC or thought provoking movies about the existance of God, etc. It will just make her feel uncomfortable. I assume by religeous you mean Christian. Of course stay away from nudity and profanity...
If we got a new Dark Star DVD, what do you think it would look like? I know this movie was very low-budget and will never look great, but I wonder, is there better source material than that of the current DVD? Certainly the DVD could be better mastered. Stephen
