Starsailor - 'Silence is Easy' - Any good?

It's a little more polished (in arrangements), but the songs themselves are not as good as Love is Here. Still not bad, but not great either.

Severe problem with X-Files: Season 6 episode "Triangle"

how many people here would buy the "intended" crap in carter's statement. this statement treats the x-files fans as idiots, blaming obvious manufacture defects as intended effects. and the credits were supposed to be unreadable as well? x-files are the most expensive dvd sets on the...

    King Crimson

Mike, I've heard ConstrucKtion of Light and while it was not bad, I wasn't too impressed. How does Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With sound like? I suppose the new album and tour is in the same vein as the new single. King Crimson have new sound frequently and there's no telling...

    King Crimson

King Crimson will be playing in my city next month. Ticket is expensive so I would like to know if anyone had been to other shows on this tour and what do they think. I haven't even bought the new CD. I have vroom and like that quite a bit, how's the new one? Same lineup? Similar sound?

    Best Turntable for under $1000.00

I have been a happy owner of a vpi hw-19 jr for a long time and think that anyone entering the budget table arena should seriously consider vpi. not only their products are built like a tank, it's fully modular and can be upgraded with practically no money wasted. search any hi-fi forum...

    Setting up a turntable

My analogue rig: turntable: VPI HW-19 Jr arm: Audioquest PT-6 cartridge: Sumiko Blue Point Special It sounds quite decent most of the time, but sometimes I think the sound is a bit thin. But generally, it's quite detail and sweet. I was afraid if I start to temper with it I would make...

    Setting up a turntable

Hope someone here still listen to vinyl. After I have set up the tone arm so that it is level (or parallel to the platter), do I still need to adjust the angle of the stylus so that it contact the record in a certain angle? I think I read that it should be adjusted, but then there's really...

    Tess - Japanese R2

since there's no R1 (or a planned release on R1), I'm considering the Janaese R2. Anyone own or have seen it? Comment on the spec or quality?

    Advanced Anime Discussion Part III

Hope it may be useful for someone. I spotted the "memories" japanese dvd, with the original LD box packaging, on sale at SF Japan Town. It's expansive, $113, but I believe the LD box packaging had long been OOP and is extremely hard to find. I'm sure there are a few fans for this great...

    CD player suggestions?

Andy, if you want something nice but doesn't cost too much (don't we all), and is also a unique player (not the curcuit city players), I recommend some of those "economy audiophile products". They are usually small companies that are dedicated to making a good affordable products; like NAD...

sound quality of new costello remaster

Had any one done a comparison of the latest batch of costello CDs to the previous versions? I am considering replacing armed forces and mighty like a rose, can someone comment on these two? one last question - anyone heard the new imperial bedroom and the ryko gold version, how do they...

Pioneer CLD-D704 Laserdisc player, Do I need a Demod for DD, AC-3?

No, 704 has a digital output. In fact, I was just using that a moment ago. Older model, however, may need one.

Any word on these Polanski films?

Cul-De-Sac and Tess on region 1 DVD would be very nice. I am actually quite happy with the laserdisc of Repulsion, Bitter Moon, and Death and the Maiden, and can hold on for a while on those until a (hopefully) much better DVD arrives.

    recommendation on portable digital jukebox

thanks guys for the input. it seems there aren't a lot of hard drive based machine that played wav files, and jukebox appeared to be the better ones out there. and you are probably right, on some music, mp3 might not make a big difference. but with a larger HD, I can always mix mp3 and wav...

    recommendation on portable digital jukebox

thanks Keith, I have checked on the nomad line and found 3 candidates: nomad jukebox 2, jukebox 3, and zen recording function is not very important, but I wonder if any one knows the playback sound quality of these 3. are they using the same electronics and are essentially the same...

    recommendation on portable digital jukebox

I am planning to buy a portable digital jukebox that is hard drive based so that I don't have to carry several CDs all the time. In order to get the highest quality of sound, I wish to get something that can play uncompressed wav files, with a minimum hard drive space of ~10 gig. Sound...

    Getting into Bowie

for you adventurous Bowie fans, and for those who have heard it, anyone here like the Bowie's EP "Baal by Bertolt Brecht"? it is, essentially, Bowie sings cabaret. it is not rock but the songs are beautiful and Bowie's voice was in great shape. it's a little odd entry in his vast...

Recommendations of Porcupine Tree or similar

thanks guys for the comments. it seems I should give the sky moves sideways a try. as for the new stuff, I listened to "strip the soul" on PT's website, is the rest of the new CD in similar style? while I have nothing against pop stuff (from my original post I listed quite a few as my...

Recommendations of Porcupine Tree or similar

I saw the mentioning of porcupine tree at the other thread and maybe I can get some recommendations here. I found out about PT through reviews and perchased "stupid dream" and "signify". There are some moments in each one that I enjoy but as a whole it was not as good as I expected...

Is most of today's music just plain bad?

ted, the hope blister is in the same vein as this mortal coil, and is comprised of the current 4AD line-up. a little OT - I must say that 4AD is no longer the way it was in the 80s. while the 80s is not particularly know for its music, it was a time when several smaller but prestige labels...

Is most of today's music just plain bad?

glad to see there are still people getting excited about "this mortal coil" the box set is a very good collection, and covers almost all their works except a few songs that are found on vinyls only. aside from "lonely is an eyesore", my favorite 4AD compilation is "all virgos are mad" and...

    DVDs from China

I go to Hong Kong frequently and buy a bunch of dvds each time. One way to know if a certain disk is bootleg or not, is by the store that's selling it. In Hong Kong, the larger stores wouldn't sell bootlegs. And there are a group of smaller stores that sell nothing but bootlegs. by browing...

    Suede's new CD

Interesting to see that Butler regretted leaving Suede, now only if he and Brett would make up... I also picked up the 2 Butler solo albums, hoping that they would be somehow an artistic extension of Dog Man Star, but while they are not complete disaster, they are nothing to brag about...

    Suede's new CD

To the Suede fans here, any thoughts on Suede's new CD "a new morning"? To me, it's been a downward slide since Dog Man Star. They have very great potential, too bad Butler wouldn't stay and when he left, the band really suffered. In all the subsequent albums, there were a couple of good...

*** Official "THE RING" Discussion Thread

In the "original" japanese movie, Sadako's (Samara in the remake) relationship with her parents was quite different than the remake. In the remake, it seems that the mother killed Samara because she was causing some "visions" she had seen (although what those visions were was not discussed)...
