Not to get anyone too excited, but I just noticed that under "features" for the SR7300, "Variable X-over" was checked. (See the 2002 catalog.) Does this relate to the bass management issue? (And maybe someone can explain why it's so important - although it's a moot point for me since I can only...
Given the frequency with which they're recommended, I'm guessing Avia and Video Essentials are not outdated... But I'm curious since Avia is more than two and a half years old and Video Essentials is more than five years old (and as far as I know no longer distributed). Anyone know of any...
That's almost the same as what I'm getting (also after months of procrastinating): Receiver: Marantz SR5300, $530 (out later this month) 6.1 speaker set-up: Paradigm Focus (mains), CC-170 (center), Atoms (surrounds), and PDR-12 (sub): $1,140 So I say go for it (unless you want to...
For what it's worth, here's what I'm getting for around your budget to go with a Toshiba 42HDX82 (and I researched this to death :)):
Receiver: Marantz SR5300, $530 (out later this month)
6.1 speaker set-up: Paradigm Focus (mains), CC-170 (center), Atoms (surrounds), and PDR-12 (sub): $1,140...
John, Where have Marantz announced the 4300-7300 line? I'm holding off from buying a 5200 until the 5300s come out, but I cannot get an answer from Marantz on when. All I've managed so far is to drool at the specs on Marantz's European web-site. Thanks, Iain
Anyone know when Marantz are releasing their *300 receivers in North America, specifically the 5300? I know they're available in the UK. I sent an e-mail to Marantz America but no response yet. Cheers, Iain
Thanks Brian - it's nice to know I'm not totally off base on these issues. I'm new to HT and I'm finding that the more information I get the more confused I get, until finally it all starts to become clearer. I've figured out which receiver (Marantz SR-5200), speakers (Paradigm Focus, CC-170...
Simon,
I started a very similar thread this morning:

Hopefully between the two threads we can both find out a little more.
Cheers, Iain
Some of you may have seen my previous posts, and I'm still undecided on which 42" 16:9 HDTV-ready RPTV to get :). The Toshiba and Mitsubishi are currently at the top of my list, but I still have a few issues to sort out in my mind. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here's where I'm at...
Many thanks for all the advice - much appreciated.
You'll all be pleased to hear I've re-thought my budget slightly and upped my receiver limit :). Something had to give however, so I've had to shave a little off the speakers and DVD :frowning: - it looks like I can still get the features and...
Thanks a bunch for all the ideas. The concensus so far seems to be:
1. Spend more money :frowning:
2. H/K seems universally liked, and everything else (except the Pioneer) has its own champions
3. Marantz should be added to my list (particularly as I can get a SR4200 for $399 at a local...
I've got similar requests for recommendations in the other component forums and it looks like the Panasonic RP82 is a favorite. Any further thoughts from some AVS folk? Cheers, Iain
I was hoping to shorten my list, not lengthen it! But thanks anyway :) - I'll take a closer look at Ascend's web-site.
Anyone think I have some manufacturers in my list that are a class below the rest? I want to cut a few!
Cheers, Iain
Thanks for the advice. I'm tending towards the Mitsubishi right now, but am by no means committed. One concern I had with the Toshiba is upgradeability - I've been lead to believe Mitsbishi and Hitachi offer some kind of future compatibility guarantee (which Toshiba doesn't). Anyone know more...
Thank you all for your much appreciated advice. If anyone is interested in following how this saga plays out, I've started the threads listed below in the harware component forums to try to shorten my short-lists before I start testing things out for myself.

I received useful advice on buying a first HT in the HT help and basics forums. Someone suggested seeking specific model recommendations in the HT hardware forums to help narrow down a short-list before testing out these puppies for myself. My HT room is about 21' by 13', but the TV has to go on...

Thanks Shane. I thought I was being a little optimistic, but maybe if I can get some good deals! After reading around some more (particularly at HTF), I've come up with the following. If anyone has any thoughts before I seek views on specific models in the individual component forums I'd be...
That's a nice idea Ted. I'll see how my post goes in the basics forum over the next few days, then seek opinions on specific models in the component forums maybe next week.
Cheers, Iain
