Is there an advantage to HD displays for SD DVDs?

I find this discussion very interesting, and I appreciate all ChrisWiggles efforts to explain the details of samples and pixles. I'm not a technical person so the multiple explanations from different viewpoint is extremely helpful to get my head wrapped around this. Anyway, I just have a...

    InFocus IN76 and flickering bulb

Just bought myself an IN76, sold as a demo unit at a local distributor in Sweden. When used for about 1/2 hour to an hour (sometimes more) the light intensity shifts with very short intervalls, in other words the bulb flickers. In is not overly dramatic, but highly disturbing. If I switch to...

Is there an advantage to HD displays for SD DVDs?

When I click ChrisWiggles image link all I get is a log-in page which -- when I successfully log in -- leads to another log-in page that says I don't have permission to view the page in question. Annoying. I would like to see that image.

Is there an advantage to HD displays for SD DVDs?

ChrisWiggles: Great answer, I've always wondered about that too. But, what happens in the opposite direction, when a movie in native 1080p-resolution is downsampled to a 720p projector? For exampel, does it look worse then when displaying an alternative 720p-native version of the same...

    What happened to DVDFile???

Anothe update as of this monday 2005-10-01: DVDfile founder and creator Peter Bracke has decided to leave the site to pursue other opportunities. As a film school graduate, Peter loves the motion picture as an art form. The wonderful presentations of film in the home made possible by DVD...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

My point was that New Hope has problems with dialogue all through the movie. Right from the start in 1977 it was patch work of different audio sources due to extensive ADR reworkings of plot and story details that comes through dialogue. I'm absolutely certain that Lucasfilm has used all kinds...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

Bill Hunt: Well, I've listened to New Hope, and sure the Tarkin line sounds muffled, especially compared to Leia's lines in that scene, which are more crisp. But this issue is to me obviously a switch between ADR and on-set-sound-recording. It happens all through the film, at Bens cabin on...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

Got the set now. Jesus-its-un-fuckin-believable how great A New Hope looks. I'm almost in tears here at work, watching on my computer. The movie is scaled up to 1280x1024 om my EIZO FlexScan L685 and it still looks amazing. I really wonder what HD would look like.

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

Yup, it's all music music music in the schedule (actually, I really had no idea VH1 was music, but then again I didn't know there was a channel called VH1, let alone that I was paying for it!). Theres not a trace of Star Wars in the programming. I live in Sweden – which is a black tv hole -...

They promoted the changes before the Special Editions release for the same reason they named it Special Edition in the first place: to achieve greater momentum in marketing, advertising and merchandize. In other words, to raise enough money to finance the prequels. (believe it or not, changing...

To Bill and the rest of The Digital Bits: I've been a visitor at your site since 1999 and I'm deeply grateful for what you do and achieve. I love your daily coverage and your dedicated editorials. It's really rare these days, and I hope you continue. With two companies of my own, I know how...

    What happened to DVDFile???

And I really miss Bracke's editorials, which used to appear every month or so. Aside from the promotional dvd-book editorial thing he published a couple of days ago, I wish he could write us more often. On the whole, these days, I sincerely feel DVDFile lacks that spontanious 'on the fly...

Technical info on 16:9 MPEG-2 files

Ken (and Marty): What is the squashed image im seeing in 4:3 before I switch to 16x9 then? Is it not the "original" 4:3 image? Is the 4:3 squashed picture perhaps displaying only a hypothetical preview of the 16x9 real thing? Maybe it is actually so that a 16x9 image per definition only can...

Technical info on 16:9 MPEG-2 files

Marty: Great explanation on 16x9! But I must ask this, cause I just cant get this part: If there are only so and so many pixels, say 720*480, to draw a picture, and these pixles are arranged in a 4:3 aspect ratio, then how can you just pull these apart into a wider image without quality...
