FS: Toshiba TW56X81 56" RPTV Western MA area

Toshiba TW56X81 56" widescreen rear projection HD-Ready TV for sale. It is about 4 years old but I can get the exact date if needed. It was calibrated after break-in by Jim Doolittle. The set is in excellent overall condition. Never cranked up or abused. Will not ship. Must be picked up in...

    ***Official Survivor: Amazon Discussion Thread***

Rob had no choice. Unless a major catfight broke out between Jenna and Heidi, that alliance was going to come down to the two girls. There's no way either of them was going to vote for the other. They even voted for each other in the popularity poll. Rob still has a fighting chance. I still...

    ***Official Survivor: Amazon Discussion Thread***

Rob's humor is getting old. He's playing the game well so far but he's setting himself up to get busted. Deena better turn down the "I am woman" deal. She'd better remember that in case it turns to male .vs. female again she will lose. Christy is still flying below the radar. Things look...

Heidi's move was about two TC's too soon. Ya gotta know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em. The Rocket Scientist may finally be showing his intelligence. Next week is key for Kristy. She has to join or create a new alliance or she's at risk. So far I feel that she's played the...

CM - I totally agree with you re: Boot Camp, that was my second favorite RTV show ever. Is it time to start speculating on what might happen during a merge? Chris

Another great episode. I think if the girls had any clue about how to handle a live fish they may have won the challenge. Beating them with a stick isn't too time efficient. Kristy picked up the secret vote. Interesting. I think the youngsters are going to hang Deena out to dry if she's...

    ***Official Survivor: Amazon Discussion Thread***

Kristy and Joanna are next, in that order. Kristy is a big disappointment for me. The poor deaf girl routine just isn't cutting it. If she doesn't get her act together in the next two days she's done. Joanna is disruptive and doesn't understand the game. Talking behind people's backs is what...

    ***Official Survivor: Amazon Discussion Thread***

I thought the term of the night was when Rob referred to the girl's team as "The Vagina Monologues". Had me in stitches. The girls choked on the number puzzle but blew through the final puzzle at the end. My guess is that raw strength isn't going to be a major feature of any of the...

Replaced my Tosh 5109 with CP72

Bought my 5109 for $550 and sold it for $100, replacing it with a CP72. So far I like the CP72 although my set was calibrated with the 5109 and needs another round using the CP72. Overall I am pleased with the CP72 PQ and have seen no evidence of this "white banding" grounding issue. Chris

    Tosh TW56X81 - Convergence won't stay put

I have the same set, and I always wait two hours before tweaking it in any way. Service mode convergence seems to last about 3-4 months on average, and it's not that far off when I recheck it. It takes about 10 minutes per input if done at that frequency. Chris

Mark's Survivor: Amazon - HTF Challenge

    Purchased a TOS-42H82 RPTV today.

I'm not familiar with your set in particular but on my Toshiba RPTV you access the contrast control via the remote: Menu-Picture-Contrast. Use the arrows on the remote to navigate. Chris

I have $1500 to spend; which widescreen to buy?

Playing Xbox on a CRT RPTV is a great way to burn it out quick. Please think long and hard about doing this. Of the three you listed I like the Toshiba the best but then again I am a Toshiba owner and thus biased. You can always wait until the next best thing comes out, and in the...

    ISF Calibration and Avia/Vide Essentials

I would buy it 1) for the audio, 2) to better understand what your ISF tech is doing, 3) to be able to tweak the set every few months, and 4) to be able to tweak the system as you change video input components (DVD players, etc.) as the ISF tech will calibrate using your current source. Chris

What is the ratio of screen size to seating area?

You didn't say whether he is getting a 4:3 set or a 16:9 set, and it does make a difference here. However if I assume he wants a 16:9 set, at nine feet out I would recommend something in the 46"-50" range. The 55"-56" sets are too big for that viewing distance IMO. The problem with getting a set...

What are the "proper" levels of contrast, color and brightness?

I tweak my set with Avia every 3-4 months. My ISF cal is about 1.5 years old and needs to be done again. Chris

What is the best RPTV for $3,000? and why

If you can stretch to $3300-3400, the Samsung HLM43W DLP 43" is stunning. IMO the Samsung DLP models have the best PQ of any RP set with HDTV program input. You have to see it to believe it. I would have upgraded my Toshiba by now but they did not offer a set bigger than 50". Of course, they...

    Local Cable and HDTV

Almost. HDTV display modes (1080i, 720p, etc.) are defined within the ATSC standard. It is similar in intent to the current analog NTSC standard for North America. HDTV can be encoded and broadcast using many encoding standards. The two most prevalent standards are 8VSB and 256QAM. 8VSB is...

Thinking of switching from DISH to Charter Cable

I just got the 3100HD and HD service from Charter. I've had it for about two weeks now. They only offer two channels today - HBO-HD and Discovery HD Theater. The HBO-HD cost is rolled into the cost of renting the settop ($9.95/mo), and when they eventually start serving up the locals there...

    HDTV Decoder delivered....What's going on????

You will get a windowboxed picture when viewing some HDTV broadcasts on a 16:9 set. For example, when HBO-HD broadcasts a commercial for something on another HBO SD channel, and upconverts it for HBO-HD. These are sometimes in straight 4:3, which will show up on your 16:9 set as vertical black...
