Paradigm Monitor or Athena Audition help?

Hi, After months of trying to make up my mind I've narrowed my speakers upgrade down to two choices. I'm thinking either of Paradigm or Athena. Here are my two systems with the prices I've been quoted. Really I'm pretty sure that I'd be happy with either it's just a tough decision to make based...

Floor Standing L/R with No Sub, Don't you lose Bass from other channels

Hi, I was reading one of the other threads about the Paradigm Monitor 7's going to 33hz so skip the sub until you can afford a good one. Is there not low bass in all 5 channels? I'm assuming that if there is no crossover the bass for the center and surround channels would just get lost? Am I...

Traditional Center vs. Bookshelf on it's side

Hi, Not being all that knowledgable about acoustics I'm wondering what the benefit of a traditional center speaker is? Currently I have a JBL N28 on top of my RPTV as a center and I'm pretty happy with it at the moment. Why go with a normal center instead of a bookshelf? I figure there must be...

    JBL N-28 vs. Athena ASB-1

Hi, About a year ago I picked up 6 JBL N28s to use as a 6.1 setup for my basement, I've got the R/L Fronts and Surrounds on 20" stands and the two centers angled down on my seating position. I've been generally happy with these speakers but I'm starting to get upgrade fever. I think that my...

    Help Checking out Tosh 50HDX82

I've had my 50HDX82 since last September and I've gone through periods of absolutely loving the set and sometimes wondering if I bought the right set. Most of the issues I've had with the set have been non-related to the actual TV but either bad source material (crappy DVDs) or my own mistakes...

V Inc. DVD Player HD Scaling, DVI, Mpeg4, Divx

My TV has a DVI input, output is supposed to not be limited through the DVI. I might have thrown you off when I mentioned the Component breakout for the computer. Greg

V Inc. DVD Player HD Scaling, DVI, Mpeg4, Divx

Hi, Has anyone seen or heard anything about this DVD player from V Inc. (www.vinc.us). It seems to offer a lot of great features, it not only is progressive but also offer scaling to HD resolutions through it's DVI or component outputs. It also plays divx or Mpeg4 movies burned to CDs. It seems...

Help, Please! What's wrong with my Toshiba 50HDX82

I spoke to two service centres here in Toronto, they both said that the blue & green starbursts just mean the two CRTs are slow at turning themselves off. They also said the green or red on the sides is from my front speakers being too close so I guess I can try moving them and see if there is...

Help, Please! What's wrong with my Toshiba 50HDX82

Hi, After getting my Toshiba 50HDX82 back in September the picture seems to have really gone down hill and I'm starting to think buying it was a bad idea. I've contacted their clueless technical support and they've agreed to send out a tech but I'd like to know what's wrong before he gets there...

Marantz Owners/Lovers Speak up? I just auditioned one and I'm on the fence

DarrenW: I got quoted the $675 at Great Metropolitan Sound at Yonge and Eglinton, it's close to where I work. It was $700 but I used the price at American Sound to negotiate down to $675. I ended up getting another Receiver anyway, I picked up a Yamaha 630 at Kromer Radio on Saturday. I was on...

Marantz Owners/Lovers Speak up? I just auditioned one and I'm on the fence

Hi, I just got back from auditioning a Marantz 5200 receiver. A local store has the 5200 on for $599 and the 6200 for $675 (Canadian). I'm looking to pick one up so I got him to audition the 5200 through some PSBs speakers. I'm a little concerned about the output of this, it sounded anemic...

VHS has more resolution than DVD, it does at this store

Hi, I just had an enlightening experience with the owner of a video store around the corner from my house. I noticed the other day they had started to carry DVDs so I decided to stop in there as it's more convenient than going to Blockbuster. I rented a VHS tape for my wife (chick flick they...

    Could I use 6 JBL N28s for a 6.1 Setup

Hi, I was wondering what a setup of 6 identical JBL N28s would sound like for a 6.1 Setup? There is a relatively good deal on them ($199 a pair Canadian, about $125 a pair US)and I'd read a review of the N26 Set that said they sounded better with an N26 on it's side instead of the matching...

    Recording HDTV - DVD Recorder?

Can I record my HD signal on the DVD Recorder at DVD quality? I know the panasonic has no component input so I don't thinks it's possible, the Phillips I know has component in. The problem is that my other digital cable channels aren't DVD quality so unless I can record the HD channels I'm...

Why do not-so-bright people own electronics stores?

Well I guess it's my own fault for going back to a local electronics store that had pissed me off in the past. I was renting a movie and this place is just down the street so I thought I would stop in and browse for a minute. I hate to tell people how to run a business but if you piss off a...

    Recording HDTV - DVD Recorder?

Are any of the current DVD Recorders capable of capturing HDTV images? I assume the Panasonic can't tape HD since it doesn't have a component input, does the Phillips down convert the HD images to DVD resolution. The only use I would have for a recorder is to tape HD or Digital Cable shows that...

first 56 pt convergence, sharper picture, did I screw up the geometry

I'm not sure why you'd even bother to post that reply, but to clear things up I meant L&O Special Victims Units, it's in HD every Friday night.

Should convergence rectangles be the same size?

Hi Gregg, Thanks again for your help, I called the store and talked to the person I bought it from. I guess I move some of the lines out instead of in, effectively I squished everything at the bottom and top and stretched the center. It's quite an entertaining picture, I'm just glad there are...

Should convergence rectangles be the same size?

Hi, I've been trying to diagnose what the problem is with the convergence I've done. I brought up the convergence grid and measured the distance between each of the grids. The distance horizontally (left to right) between the boxs seems to be close to the same all the way across. Vertically...

first 56 pt convergence, sharper picture, did I screw up the geometry

I'm still not 100% sure what is wrong. I could tell for sure that the Geometry is off, I watched some of LOTR and then some Law & Order in HD and people's head looks very square and the top & bottom 5-10% of the screen seem to be squished. I used a template for the 50H81 and I did the...

first 56 pt convergence, sharper picture, did I screw up the geometry

I got mine at The Next Big Thing, you can order them from their website nbtelectronics.com. Unfortunately it doesn't look like I did it right the first time, my fiancee came downstairs to comment that everyones heads look funny.Hopefully this is easily correctable by me. Greg

first 56 pt convergence, sharper picture, did I screw up the geometry

Hi, I picked up a 56pt convergence template and just finished doing my first convergence. It took me a little longer than I thought it would (about 2.5 hours). It seems as if the picture has gotten sharper but the geometry seems to be a bit messed up. I used a template for the 50HX81 would this...

Quality of Component Cables Provided by Rogers Cable?

Are the component cables that Rogers Cable provides with their HD box worth using? Normally I would replace any free connectors that come with hardware but I quizzed the tech about them and he seemed to believe (whether or not he's correct) that they are decent connnectors and that Rogers pays a...

    Panny RP82 vs. Tosh 3800

It was HiFi2000, I go there because it's close to my house and it's next door to Canadian Tire so I find myself in the area on a regular basis. I like to go in and look at stuff (usually while my fiancee is in the garden centre at CT) but I've never made a purchase there. They previously lost a...

    Panny RP82 vs. Tosh 3800

Hi, I've read a lot on these forums and thought I had made up my mind as far as which one to get. I had decided on the Panasonic because it had a better deinterlacing chip and a better MPEG decoder than the Toshiba. I had pretty much made up my mind when I happened to stop by a local stereo...

    What causes a soft picture?

What causes a soft picture? I've noticed in the 3 weeks since I've got my set (Toshiba 50HDX82) the picture has seemed to soften up quite a bit when I watch DVDs. The HD signals still look fantastic but the DVD has seemed to deteroriate. It is apparent when objects on screen are smaller and in...

    Questions Toshiba 50HDX82

I have some questions regarding my Toshiba RPTV, I've been very happy with the picture thus far but have a couple questions: 1. I notice that when I do the nine point convergence the #1 position (top left corner) never gets tight, it appears bloomy and fuzzy all around the "T" and I can't...

    Help? Roger HDTV won't work

Thanks for your help, I complained and a new tech came tonight. He replaced the splitter outside (frequency was too low) and now HD works. There isn't much on right now but the Hockey loop on the preview channel is pretty sweet. Thanks, Greg

    Help? Roger HDTV won't work

Thanks, you wouldn't happen to know who you talked to? I called customer support and spoke to a real helpful "technical service representative". I explained the problem to her and this was the exchange afterwards: Her: You have the wrong cables connected Me: How do you know? I did not tell...

    Help? Roger HDTV won't work

Thanks, I've done all the setup right, and I've checked the box and there appears to be no toggle switch for HD. The installer is going to call me back today, I'll tell him to check and see if they turned the HD on? I asked him about this and he thought the HD was always on everywhere.
