In an effort to try and get a better handle on what Film Noir is, could someone give me a quick explanation on what a) German Expressionism is and b) what Italian Neo-Realism is. My understanding is that these two film movements were influencial to Film Noir. Thanks. Greg

Wow, I was just about to post a congrats to Irina when I saw her new message. Are you kidding me? Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm not familiar enough with Chinatown (soon to be rectified) to have gotten that question. I knew it was Fellini's 81/2 after the clue but I would have had to...

Rich, Count me in as someone who would also be OVERJOYED to have a copy of Boomerang. I understand that you only have two copies and two people have already shown interest before me (DAMN!) but I thought I would take a number just in case. Greg

Hammer & Forgotten Noir Sets from VCI

Film Noir Fans, Is this Hammer Studio release of film noir worth a blind buy. I like film noir but I don't won't to buy something that is complete crap. However, seven movies for just over 2o dollars is a good deal. Any thoughts or advice. Thanks Greg

20th Century Fox's 'Film Noir Classics' DVD Series

Regarding the $5 mail-in rebate, does anyone know if Fox accepts receipts from e-tailers? I buy most of my DVDs online so I don't usually have in-store receipts. If I remember correctly, the mail-in rebate instructions say nothing about movies bought online. thanks Greg

Marco, I believe that is Shaw cable that has picked up the contract with TCM. I'm not sure, but does Shaw only provide for the west coast? You are probably SOL in Quebec. Call your cable provider and ask them to pick up TCM. If enough people ask then maybe they will get it. You can always...

Hi all, I'm a little late in viewing some of these but just wanted to express my thoughts on the titles. This last week I've been watching a lot of noir. I've caught: Born to Kill Crossfire Narrow Margin Clash by Night The Set-Up The Street With No Name and Somewhere in the Night...

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: Warner's Film Noir Classic Collection Volume Two (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED).

Hi all, I'm a little late in viewing the movies in volume II but just wanted to express my thoughts on the titles and some other Noirs. This last week I've been watching a lot of noir. I've caught: Born to Kill Crossfire Narrow Margin Clash by Night The Set-Up The Street With No Name...

Laura Fox Film Noir not for sale in Canada!?

At one point Laura had been replaced with House of Bamboo for wave 1 of Fox's film noir series. Laura was supposed to be released some time in June in wave 2. I also had heard (this is all from Barry Maxwell at the Bits) that Laura had been put back in wave 1. I'm not sure if Laura or House of...

Someone sell me on ... a famous movie i've never seen!

Stephen, While your lists has some good movies on it only one (in my opinion) stands out as A MUST SEE and that's Casablanca. As others have mentioned, Casablanca is perhaps the 'perfect' movie. After seeing it for the first time I asked myself why I hadn't seen it sooner. Casablanca is one...

What the...?!??!? ZOMBI 2 2 disc version NOT flagged for FILM (progressive) mode???

Rich, thanks for the info. I cancelled my order and then ordered the BU version. I don't think my DVD is 'progresive scan' since the manual didn't say anything to that effect. For what its worth, I use a cheapo Toshiba 1800. I don't think my TV is non-interlaced either. Anyway, good to know for...

What the...?!??!? ZOMBI 2 2 disc version NOT flagged for FILM (progressive) mode???

Hi, could you guys help me out. I just ordered SS version of Zombie but I don't think it's to late to cancel the order. I'm a little lost regarding this progressive scan thing and 'the dvd is flaged wrong'. Is it possible to explain this in a paragraph or two. Based on this information I might...

Recommend me some good Horror flicks please.

I agree with Andy, The Hammer Frankenstein series is great. Peter Cushing is outstanding...as always. As for other horror you absolutely have to watch Night of the Living Dead (original) and Dawn of the Dead. Zombie (aka Zombie 2) is also definitely worth a watch. Afterall, Fulci is known as the...

I'm not sure if this movie has been mentioned but I would vote for 'In Country' with Bruce Willis. It's not your typical Vietnam movie but it is quite good. Greg

*** Official Film Noir Discussion Thread

OK, after reading this thread for a few days it quickly became obvious to me that I don't know jack about film noir. I think I'm going to invest in some books about the genre (I believe that Herb recommended some books at one point). I've read several times that film noir evolved from German...

Herb - I noticed that The Last Seduction wasn't on your list. Do you, or anyone else for that matter, not consider this movie noir or neo-noir? I think that Linda Fiorentino's characters is one of the great FFs. Greg

I would consider The Maltese Falcon to be a prototypical film noir. Of course, my choice is based on a pool of about five films! I may change my mind once I watch my 10 new film noir acquisitions. Walter - I see your point. For me, when I watch a movie I love (any movie) I invariably look...

Very cool thread. How do you define 'Film Noir'? I never really thought about it too much but after reading the posts of this thread I would have to side with Walter: It's really cool to read what everyone thinks. Watched Force of Evil for the first time last night (I'm just a novice...
