The Region 1 has a sort of leathery texture. I can say that the Swedish Region 2 has a completely smooth surface. The Region 1 is way cooler.

I gotta agree with the previous speaker. This was some cool stuff three years ago, but today almost every action flick outdoes it. At least in some respects, I can't really vouch for them super-low frequencies. My demos are mainly EpI: TPM and LOTR

The only thing that really concerns me is the lack of a 5.1 track on the Criterion release. I have viewed the Region 2 release and the audio on that one blew me away. Considering the age of the movie, that is. But the Criterion does have a stellar image. Tough one, this is.
