I second what Jan has posted above. Many agree Panasonic is a great set, especially when calibrated professionally. But if the key is points are good 4:3 stretch modes and mediocre cable watching, I think Toshibas are hard to beat (with the exception of Pioneers) - At least from what I have...
Good to know of another Canuck in the same boat;) !
In Toronto (GTA) area, 57SWX20B pretty much averages at MSRP $5299 (no discounts). OTOH, 57HDX82 retails at $4299 with some discounts (MSRP $4999) up to 15%!!!
For further pricing/availability info read this Digital Home Canada Forum thread...
I am a newbie as well and I too was deabting between the same two sets, but now leaning heavily towards Toshiba (haven't bought either yet). The two main reasons are: 1. The price - Hitachi is ~CAD 1000 more over here in Canada (not sure about US pricing). Ironically enough, 65" versions are the...
Here's
the story of a Future Shop customer in Toronto who had his 50H81 disassembled/reassembled by Toshiba authorized service without a problem. Read post #s 3 and 10
The downside to this method is just in case if you have to take it out again for service..
Andrew, JohnnyG (Next Big Thing Electronics) has RP82 in Silver. He will also carry HDX82 line and I believe the prices are expected soon. Future Shop has prices for all HDX models on their system. Can only remember 57" for $4299 - I'm not sure about accuracy of their pricing, though.
You're welcome, Peter.
I too am looking to get HD from Rogers and would also like to give OTA a try now that Buffalo stations are starting one by one. First, I have to get my new TV though :) .
As Chet Hayes mentioned, replacement model for 2002-03 57H82 is already out in the market and is cheaper in addition to DVI upgradeability.
Apparently, there is no or little evidence of 540p upconversion artifacts and ghosting on x82 models unlike the x81s. See this article @ Keohi HDTV...
My feeling is it will be cheaper to buy 50HDX82 (~$300 more) which has built-in DVI input than to upgrade 50H82 later.
BTW, on page 14 of Link Removed says "This TV is not intended to and should not be used with a PC". Do you know why?
Check out the following Toshiba USA links:
Link Removed (applies to all HDX82 models except for dimensions/weight)

I am also thinking of getting either 50 or 57HDX82.
