As long as you use a quality cable, anything up to 25ft. shouldn't degrade the sound. I am not familiar with your jbl sub, but with my subs, I have always noticed a small but noticable gain in output with a Y connector. If radio shack is willing to let you return the Y adaptor, it wouldn't hurt...
Hey John, Neither the xbox or PS2 has the ability to display 480p(progressive scan) for movies. Xbox does have the ability to progressive scan games though. Also a good number of xbox games have 5.1 audio if that is of interest. Both are good systems for games and as a dvd player.
