    My cat is insane

Even by cat standards, she's insane. When she's done using the litterbox she'll run all around my apartment at full speed sliding around on the floor. Then she'll stop, anxiously looking around in all directions, meow in these short bursts that almost sound like barks, and then take off again...

Does your town still have a great cinema?

I finally caught my first film at the Fox Theatre last night (The Two Towers) and I can't get over what an improvement in the overall experience having a beautiful and old-fashioned style theater is. The auditorium itself is very large, probably seating close to 1,000 people. They have ushers...

Le Mans / Auto racing fans, you need to check this out!

Someone on a local car forum just posted a link to this. I guess there are ads for it on Speed TV. It looks amazing! I am a huge Le Mans / sportscar racing fan so this is unbelievable to me.. anamorphic widescreen, 5.1 sound, kickass camera work, and a thumping soundtrack by members of Front...

    Question on the Loewe Aconda

I was at a local HT store and was checking out one of these magnificent displays. They really do live up to the praise lavished on them on this forum! I have one question regarding the display, though - The model I was checking out (I believe it was a 38") had one strange trait. I demo'd 3...

Royce Applegate dies in house fire :(

Royce Applegate, who portrayed General James Kemper in both Gettysburg and Gods and Generals died on New Year's Day in a house fire, according to CNN. I really enjoyed him in Gettysburg as the blustering politician-turned-soldier.. That's a shame...

Robin Williams is an online gaming junkie

Heard it straight from the horse's mouth on the radio yesterday. One of the local morning shows interviewed him. He talked for a few minutes about his favorite games and how much he enjoys online gaming. The two games he mentioned were Counterstrike and Ghost Recon. It was pretty obvious he was...

Guys - How much would you spend on a pair of shoes?

This isn't a poll, really, despite the title.. Over the next couple of weeks I'll be attending a couple of office Christmas parties and some other informal gatherings. Tomorrow is also a board meeting day where I work, which means business dress is required. So I decided to get a new pair of...

Jeffrey Allen Sample, 12/19/1976 - 12/01/2002, I love you, Jeff

My best friend died before my eyes tonight. I wrote this final update to send out to a mailing list of concerned friend and family he's emailed over the span of his illness. His parents asked me to write this. "He is now at rest, we who are left are the ones to suffer." This is Jeff's...

Does anyone else feel really guilty after yelling at their pet?

I have a cat who is pretty well behaved. I've had her for over 2 years now and I can count the number of times I've yelled at her on one hand. I had to do that tonight. There is a new plant upstairs, it's a big artificial tree in a pot with some fake twigs and grass or whatever around the base...

Death and Technology: Give Me My Friend Back

This is such an interesting time we live in. We can communicate, by voice or keystroke, with anyone in the world with a like connection. We can retrieve copies of public documents off of computers in the remotest parts of the world in seconds, we can immerse ourselves in any culture we choose...

Wow, MS really hit a home run w/ XBox Live

I don't think it could have been any easier to set up! Total time to remove my old router, install and configure the new WAP/router, install and configure the WET11 and register on XBL - under 1 hour. Played my first online game of MechAssault, I got drilled but it was a learning experience...

Will there ever be a lightsaber duelling game?

If there is one game I pine for in life, one true nerd fantasy that I have, it's to own a real lightsaber. I've always had a fondness for sword duels in films, most of my favorite films feature them in some form or another. I would pay a ridiculous amount of money for an immersive lightsaber...

    Panny 53WX42 - shouldn't this upconvert 720p to 1080i?

I tried to play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 on my XBox last night in 720p mode, believing that the signal would be upconverted to 1080i on my TV. Instead, I just got a blank screen. Does this mean if I buy an OTA HD receiver that I won't be able to watch any 720p broadcasts?

    Tony Hawk 4: Awesome

You'll have to forgive me enthusiasm, but this game is -so- cool. I've only played one other Tony Hawk game, THPS 3, on a Gamecube in a store demo. I picked up a copy of THPS4 for my XBox tonight as I saw it supports 720p (too bad my TV failed to upconvert it to 1080i as I thought it would, but...

Worst butchering of a novel adapted for the screen?

The cliche' is that "The book is always better than the movie". But there are some cases where the book is taken out to a back alley, shot in the head and tossed into a dumpster. I offer you - Sebastian Junger's "The Perfect Storm". One of the most informative and heartbreaking accounts of...

This card is a great choice if you're building a HTPC. Card is retail, built by ATI, in box sealed, never opened. Purchased from Mwave.com a couple of months ago. Hitman 2 - XBox or PC?

Anyone played this game on either format? I was thinking of getting the PC version since it'll be higher resolution and generally a keyboard/mouse works best for me for first/third person games.. but the idea of playing it on my TV has a lot of appeal..

How much and where to put a light source during viewing?

I have come to notice that a small amount of soft light in the room can have a very notable impact on my TV's display, for the better. I have no protective shield so glare isn't an issue. My HT room has no windows so I have pretty good control over how much light there is. I know some people put...

Been reading threads on various forums based around various interests of mine and I notice more and more posts from people constantly bragging about their huge new "X" item purchase, and almost inevitably it's financed or put on a credit card. BBC: DVD Region coding system on the verge of colapse!

Excellent article on the state of Region encoding and why it's failing: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/...fe/2197548.stm It once again reiterates the simple truth that information wants to be free of constraint. And the more one uses asinine restrictions to keep information contained to...

Picked up an SVS sub today

I purchased an SVS CS 20-39 today from a fellow HTF member, along with a Marantz MA500 amp to power it. After bringing it home it took all of 10 minutes to get it connected, and another hour or so of altering placement, setting levels, etc. Then I put in a copy of the most bass-loaded DVD...

Music Hall CD-25 v. Rega Planet 2K v. Rega Jupiter

How do these three CD players stack up against each other? I can get the Rega Planet 2000 for about $100-$150 more than the Music Hall. Is it a better player, though? And while the Jupiter seems prohibitively expensive it is still a very interesting player.. Anyone tried any/all of these out?

Any music performances shot in widescreen?
