Scott - on most AV receivers you must choose the input source - analog, digital, or digital auto-detect. Set it on auto detect and it will automatically select the digital signal when available. Also, on my receiver a small red light comes on when a digital signal is received.
The digital connection is worth it IF your cable co. sends 5.1 broadcasts and/or other digital channels. And just so you don't go thru the same headache I did, note that you usually have to keep the RCA composite connections hooked up as well as the digital. If not on my Scientific Atlanta box...
I use those Parts Express composite to S-video adapters for the same purpose you are - convenience. They work fine. Obviously no gain in signal, but no drop off that I can tell.
John, Thanks for the link. You are right - the search function is a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, I can't access this site from work (restricted) on my T1 line, and where I live in a rural area, all I have is painfully slow dial up. Searching takes forever, esp. if you have to go through...
I'm interested in transferring some of my vinyl collection to cd, but am unsure of the process. I have stereo audio-in jacks on my 7.1 sound card. And I think the correct connection is to use the Tape Monitor Out jacks on my amp, to the stereo mini jack "audio in" on my computer. Is this...
David - I talked to my nephew Jeremy today, and he can not meet you this weekend. He is leaving Thurs. morning for a softball tournament in South Carolina, and won't be back until late Sunday. I really appreciate your offer. But please, go ahead and offer them up to someone else. If no one...
David - Thanks. I'll call him tonight and see if he can meet you this weekend. If not, I'll let you know so you can offer them up to someone else. I'll be in touch. JD
How close are you to Dahlonega (spelling?)? I have a nephew there, and he could pick them up for me. I'm definitely interested. Reply here, or email me. I can only check this board at night. Thanks. JD
I have no experience with powered speakers, other than a sub-woofer. However, I don't think it will work, unless the powered speaker has an RCA input jack on it (similar to subwoofers). I looked at the owner's manual for your model on-line at JVC, and it specifically showed the need for a power...
I look at it like this - spend the few extra cents/foot it costs to buy in-wall rated wire. I bought mine at Home Depot, and it was maybe 10 cents more per foot. That's only $10 extra for 100 feet of wire. This should be a non-issue. UL deems it important enough to rate it as such, so why not...
In most cases, if you can run component connections, then do so. But realize that it may or may not give a better picture than S-video. Depends on the quality/size of your tv, the quality of the cable purchased, etc. etc. If possible, buy both types and try them and decide for yourself. Then...
Frank - thanks for your help. I took your list to Home Depot and got everything on it. The only change was that I had to buy 6" takeoff/duct. They didn't sell 5". I'm about halfway thru my remodel after this weekend. I'll get to the duct work later this week. Thanks for your help.
I'm remodeling a small bath next to my HT room. I need to add a room vent (in ceiling) for the bathroom. Right now I'm in the framing stage. The main trunk line for the heating/air system is 10 feet away, and I have a clear path via floor joist to tap into the system. I know I'll need the...
Aaron, don't know if this would help your situation, but they now make insulation that is completely covered in plastic to make it easier to install/less itchy. While it does have small air holes to allow it to expand, it may provide some vapor barrier. Also, while a lot of trouble and not...
Armstrong has acoustical ceiling panels that have fiberglass insulation on the back. They are more soundproof than regular tiles, and I can't imaging they would vibrate given the material (flexible with fiberglass backing).
FWIW, I changed last year from having my surround speakers (BIC DV-52s) stand mounted at ear level to wall mounted near the ceiling angled down. I much prefer the sound with the speakers up high. The dispersion and realism of surround effects in movies is much better, to my ears at least. David...
Can I upgrade a basic budget pc that has integrated sound & video, by adding a better sound card and video card with agp? Will this bypass the integrated sound/video? Any potential problems with doing this. Obviously I don't know much about this. Just wondering. Thanks.
I own/use the Sound & Vision HT Tune-up disc. It is made by the same people that made the AVIA disc (Ovation Software). It was cheap ($15). It was very easy to use along with a Rad. Shack SPL meter. It has all the basic audio and video calibrations. I've heard if you have a RPTV, you may prefer...
I just rec'd my 24 Season 1 dvd set today ($34 shipped - yoohoo!). The wife and I started watching season 2 and we are hooked. Should we wait until season 2 is over before watching season 1? This current 3 week break is killing us. Any thoughts?
I moved to a new house a few months ago, and this stuff has been in storage ever since. Time to clean out the storage room. I am the original owner of this equipment. Prices are low so I can move this stuff out. Shipping will be of your choosing from 35243. Local pickup is fine too. I can accept...
Jacquelin - I'll try to answer your "priorities" from your last paragraph in order. 1. Your DVD hookup is the best (or preferred) method - component straight to the TV, sound to receiver via either digital coax or optical (you choose - either is fine). 2. Sound of cds played on your DVD...
Matthew - probably a dumb question, but are you sure you ran the coax out of the cable box to the "input" on the VCR, and not the "output"? If you get those backwards, you will get no signal to record. Also, you don't mention how you have your VCR hooked up thru the receiver. If that isn't...
Thanks Jim. I don't know what you did differently - followed a different link I guess. I just went there again, clicked on customer service (http://www.panasonic.com/consumer_el...egID=DVD-RV32K), entered my model number, then clicked on their link for manuals/operating instructions, and I...
Bought an open box RV32 at BB for an incredible $40 after rebate. It came with everything but a manual. I went to Panny's website, but no manuals available for download on that model. Can anyone here who owns one either scan/email, or copy and snail mail to me? I'd be happy to cover any...
I bought for my brother a Sherwood 7108 at CC last month for $129. This has 100 watts/ch., DD/DTS/DPLII. It's the least expensive HT receiver on the market, and it is a good performer. I have about a 3 or 4 year old Sherwood RVD9090 that I just love. It is DD/DTS, and has pre-outs for all...
