It was ripped to pieces in 1983! :)
To Chris Will, re: ROTJ. I love the story but the execution is just so far below all other 5 films. Marquand just wasn't up to the job; just take a look at some of his shot compositions, particularly on Endor and in Jabba's Palace...they are very pedestrian...
The midis were definitely meant to tie in to the theme of "symbiosis" which is woefully underdeveloped in the film itself. The midis should have just been used as a genetic tie to the Force and nothing else beyond that.
On #2, raising the stakes is nice, but the PT is all about intrigue, betrayal, plotting, and revenge. There's a reason these stories didn't get made first, after all. It's why the OT is a lot more fun (though I still find the PT interesting).
On #3, I think the failure here was in the...
Films that come to mind as my favorites of this decade:
The Fountain
LOTR: FOTR EE
Munich
There Will Be Blood
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Pan's Labyrinth
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
The Dark Knight
The...
last week, I attended star wars in concert with 15,000 other people. we heard live music and saw images from all six films. whether those 15,000 cared about the PT or not, the PT certainly hasn't dampered enthusiasm for star wars in general. so don't overestimate the impact that the PT has had...

Amazing spectacle but the story never grabbed me emotionally. That's because it was too derivative of other films/stories, and because the story was unsophisticated philosophically and the characters were very 1D (particularly the villains). So while I did enjoy myself, I can't see myself...

Touche. :) However, and trust me on this one, I did not influence him one bit in his love for TPM. I let him watch it and it naturally grew on him. :)

Well my anecdotal evidence is different than yours. My own kids love TPM and watch it quite often. And all the kids at my daughter's school (particularly the boys) love Star Wars, particularly the PT.
That's a pretty uninspiring lineup, IMHO. Looks like the year of 80s remakes.
My anticipation list looks pretty much like Chuck's. Inception probably far and away my most anticipated.
I mostly agree with Edwin. I thought it was a very solid effort, and though overall it didn't achieve the greatness of Disney's classic 2D animated features, there were some very inspired moments in the film.
I thought the Lassiter influence was particularly strong, and the emphasis of the...
I agree but it cuts both ways: reading about the history of the movie not only convinced me that the OOT needs to be preserved, but also made me better understand Lucas' desire to get ANH "right" in his eyes.

Near great film which I anticipate will get better on repeat viewings. Could be a pivotal sci-fi film, since it treats the aliens as normal characters as opposed to mysterious creatures. Can't wait to see it again.

My biggest criticism is that the film just didn't have a thread that carried all the way through. More than any other HP film, this one feels like a loose compilation of highlights from the book.
But there is a lot to like, and the last 40 minutes of the film is very well done. Just not...
I vote for more Tholians and Gorn. If they have to have a "major" adversary, make it the Romulans. The Klingons held this role in the original timeline and are pretty tired by now. The Romulans never really got much screen time (with the exception of TNG) and I would love to see them get more.
Re: the sound mix.
Anyone else find it a bit...different? Seemed very localized to the center channels, hardly any use of the surrounds. Anyone else hear the same or was this just my theater?

Michael Mann does not disappoint with this film. After reading some of the reviews (elsewhere) I was a little worried, but I had nothing to worry about: this one nicely takes its place in Mann's repertoire.
I really, REALLY loved the video look to this film. Sure, it's possible to make...
I think that is a fair premium, but the only problem is that single disc DVDs are now $20 each (appx); before Blu-ray came along, they were about $15 each.
I actually kinda like the film right up until they meet Marion. Then it gets way too busy and the chemistry between the two just isn't that great. The script is also a bit of a mess and could have used another couple of streamlining rewrites. Oxley and Mac could be dropped from the film...
I would be up for a horror angle on IJ...something similar to the opening scene in the Indiana Jones and the Monkey King script. I know they sort of took this direction in Temple of Doom, but they could be much more explicit with it. I also think King Solomon's mines or Atlantis would work as...
If I would have one plea for those writing the story, it would be to make it mostly about INDY. Give him at most ONE sidekick, not 4-5. I'm guessing Mutt will feature prominently, so they should leave Marion, Sallah, Oxley, et al, out of it or only have them feature in a very minor way.
