Can I build a REALLY REALLY budget sub?

I'm just about to buy a Sony SAWM40, which is supposed to be a good BUDGET sub. I know you guys are laughing since yours are all like $800+. But still, about $200 is my budget for now. Is it possible to use that same money to build a sub that performs better than the Sony? If it is possible...

What happens when you have problems with an RPTV you have shipped to your house?

I'm thinking of ordering a Toshiba 42h81 from Onecall.com an authorized dealer. The price is right and the shipping is included. My only worry is that RPTV's are delicate creatures...if I have a problem with it, will I have to ship it back to Onecall or can I take it to a local Toshiba dealer...

Should I get the Panny RP62 instead of RP56?

I thought it was bad enough trying to decide between the Toshiba 3750/4700 and Panny RP56. I finally decided on the RP56 (which I can't get locally), when I discovered the RP62 at Circuit City for the same price as online ($179)! But...is it at least as good is my question. I know it's new...

How bad and how frequent is the flicker bug on the RP56?

I'm still looking into the Panasonic RP56 as my new DVD player, but have been haunted by the idea of it having a flicker bug. How bad is this bug and does it show up often? (Also, in what movies have you noticed it?)

Does DTS actually sound better than DD 5.1?

I hear so much about how great certain DVD's sound with the DTS soundtrack. Is this really true? If so, what makes a DTS soundtrack sound better than a DD 5.1 track? Can you hear more detail or what?

How useful is zoom feature on DVD players?

I'm going through an intense mental struggle choosing between a few DVD players...one of them has zoom and the other doesn't, but I don't know just how important this feature is. 1. Do you use zoom often? 2. What do you need it for? 3. How do you get by if your player isn't equipped...

Is there any way to order from K's online? (or at least show what their shipping charge would be to make the Sears.com price-match people happy)

What basic calibrations can I do to hold me over until I get AVIA?

I don't have a DVD player yet, so I can't use AVIA. What basic calibrations should I do on my Toshiba 42h81 until I get the player?

Can subwoofer mess up RPTV convergence?

Can the vibrations of a subwoofer loosen the guns in a RPTV? I'm considering placing a Sony SAWM40 next to a Toshiba 42h81.

What other subs are similar to Sony SAWM40?

What are some subs that are equal to or greater in performance compared to the Sony SAWM40, but that I may be able to find used or on special for a price that is similar to the SAWM40 (which is about $160)?

    DirectTV chroma bug???

I'd been enjoying my new DirectTV system for about a week when I noticed that pure red on the screen resulted in the "jaggies" typical of the chroma bug on DVD players. Has anyone else noticed this on their satellite system? (In case the satellite receiver makes a difference, I'm using a...

Get it together newbies. Calibrate your stuff!

I may sound like I'm from the stone-age, but because of a limited budget, I'll have a RPTV before I get a DVD player. Are there any basic but important adjustments I can make without having a calibration disk that will hold me over until I get a DVD player?

Is it Ok to remove speaker grills?

I just got the JBL NSP1 speaker set. The box (and many ads) picture the set without the black mesh on the front of the speakers. Is it Ok to remove it? If so, how? Finally, are there any consequences to doing so?

    DIY Equipment Racks...?

Thanks for that link, Bill...I'm looking foward to trying this out soon. Another question: Is it possible to drill down perfectly perpendicularly using a hand-drill, or do you need special machinery when drilling the MDF? Thanks.

How do you shop for the lowest prices?

I normally check Bestbuy.com along with a few other of my favorite stores and then look at sites like pricegrabber.com pricescan.com bizrate.com and dealtime.com to find the lowest prices. However, these sites only have access to a limited amount of stores and often I'll read on HTF about a deal...

    Widescreen TV strechmode opinions.

I'm on the verge of buying a Toshiba 42h81, but recently had some doubts because of the whole burn-in issue with 4:3 programming (I watch a moderate amount of TV, but also maybe a movie every 1 or 2 weeks). I'd like to hear what those of you who use stretch modes to fill a 16:9 screen when...

Satellite TV and RF cable quality issues.

I just got a DirectTV system and noticed that the dish is hooked to the satellite receiver via an RF cable. Since a system can only be as strong as its weakest link, is it worth it to hook the satellite receiver to my TV via S-video (or invest in a new receiver with component)? Right now my TV...

    Surround speaker placement enigma.

I've read much of the available information on surround speaker placement, but everything deals with the ideal room where the TV and couch is parallel with the walls. However, my TV is in the corner of the room and my couches are too. Hence, no couch is directly facing the TV, as shown in the...

    Receiver & Speakers < $550 ?

I am really starting to seriously consider buying the JBL NSP1 speaker system and the Sony SAWM40 sub. I'm still a bit stuck on the receiver, though (I've been checking out the ones you guys have suggested). The JBL's handle 100watts per speaker (center handles 150), but most of these < $300...

Which is better: Pioneer VSX-D711 or the Onkyo TX-SR500

Ralph, I was looking into getting those JBL NSP1 speakers, which handle at least 100 watts each. However, the Onkyo tx-sr500 only delivers 55 watts per channel. Is this, in essence, short-changing the speakers, or do you find it good enough?
