From what I have read Kubrick had to compromise with his theatrical presentations which lead him to shoot his later films the way he did...
He always intended for ACO to be 1.66:1 (actually 1.55:1 to be precise)... unfortunately whilst European cinemas could handle this US theatres usually...
I write for one of the biggest UK DVD review sites and we rarely receive many review copies at all and most other UK sites seem to suffer as well..
So to us this is simply business as usual and as usual we'll go and buy a copy to review.... In actual fact I treat a review copy as bonus perk of...
I got my set a couple of days ago and as my review was up I thought I'd let you all know :)

(I posted this as noone else seems to have reviewed it yet :))
There has been no TOS release in UK yet... Therefore UK fans (including me) are keeping fingers crossed that TOS season sets will appear... Otherwise one day I'll fork out for the R1's
What bothers me is that we are all for OAR but when it comes to audio we want the latest whizz-bang thing...
I will be disappointed if the original soundtrack is not available... With a lot of films I prefer to watch them OAR and OAP (Original Audio Presentation :))...
Now you may aruge that...
Don't know I'll let you know when I've watched the R1 (It's only just arrived)...
The R1 release is quite a bit cheaper being around £50 ($76 ish) at some online retailers and prices start around £85 ($130 ish) R2...
R4 maybe a decent compromise as it is PAL and retails slightly above R1...
That's "roughly" it...
The R1 set is 5 dual layer doubles sided discs (in actual fact the extras disc is single layer dual side and one other is dual layer one side single layer the other :))
The content is identical on the two sets (barring PAL-NTSC conversion)
here is the...
2 things spring to mind
1) Canon - As someone else has stated anything that has appeared onscreen is canon apart from The animated series... This comes from direct from prducers of Trek
2) Saavik's vulcan/romulan heritage... Rumours are that it was indeed filmed... And that it has been...
You can debate how it was INTENDED until the cows come home... Ask each director of each episode of Buffy which ratio they intended when shooting it and you'll have your answer... Joss Whedon's word is not law in this case as the intention is down to the cinematographer and director on...
All the information I have read says that this was shot in 16:9 and framed for both 4:3 and 16:9 presentation...
You say you want the 4:3 as that is how it was originally shown...
Well in the UK we want it widescreen as that is how it was originally shown on BBC2 :)
We got what we wanted...
As ever OAR, well presented transfer and accomplished soundtrack are top priorities on my buyers guide...
I bought a featureless R2 edition of Highlander because I couldn't bare to own the nasty artefact ridden mess that was the R1 even though it had more extras.
Now that AB have rereleased...
Excellent review Ron as ever...
Seems you beat me to it this time... Oddly enough your views dovetail quite nicely with mine... if anyone wants to read a Brit version of a review then go here :)
