Possibly (hopefully!) also His Kind of Woman. I am beyond stoked for these two noir sets. Warners, thanks for continuing to ensure that I'm spending all my money now and so will be living off gin in retirement.
Thanks Paul and Marco; for some reason it never occurred to me to check the UPC codes. After doing so and finding out they were identical I was happy to take the plunge, but Marco's concrete confirmation has completely alleviated my paranoia :)
Robert Mitchum is definitely under-represented on DVD :). I'd say my own personal top three out of those not yet released in R1 are The Yakuza , The Friends of Eddie Coyle and Angel Face . I've got high hopes the first and last see the light of day this year but I'm not so optimistic about Eddie .
Personally I am waiting to hear exactly what's getting released in Canada before I place my order; I am a little gun-shy (sorry) about Warner releases after the, admittedly rare, omission of extras due to rights issues in the past.
Michael Winner's remake of The Big Sleep is available in an anamorphic 1.78:1 transfer in both R2 and R4, as opposed to the apparently fullscreen only release in R1. The R2 version of Dick Richards' Farewell, My Lovely is 1.33:1 only, just like the R1 and R4 releases; does anyone know whether...
I really do question Paramount's logic when it comes to back-catalogue releases; some of the titles they've released this year would be of interest only to a very small percentage of film fans, whereas I have to believe that all of the titles mentioned here would be must-buys for all lovers of...
Bullet to Beijing and Midnight in St. Petersburg - these two made-for-TV sequels generally get a rough ride from Palmer fans, but while they are obviously not in the same league as the first two films I can admit to having a soft spot in my heart for them. Bullet to Beijing is out on DVD in...
Thanks for all the invaluable comparisons Gary! Are there any plans for a comparison between Criterion's Closely Watched Trains and the R2 UK Arrow Closely Observed Trains, pretty please? ;)
I sympathise Steve; after five years of waiting for a R1 release, I finally stumped up the cash and bought the French R2 a couple of weeks ago... Karma :D
Thanks for the information people :) I'm a bit disappointed really, since I had heard that this was going to be a multi-disc SE. Oh well, I'll take what I can get ;)
With around a month to go until the R4 release of "Lantana," I've yet to see any disc specifications at all. Does anyone have any information on the disc(s) they could share?
Most of these would be at the top of my list too. This seems to be another forgotten genre when it comes to DVD; just how many classic film noirs have been released? I can't think of many.
I'm looking forward to "Trading Places" too. To add to the above list, another title that has music altered for the DVD version is Haskell Wexler's "Medium Cool."
I can't confirm that the episodes aren't cut, but the sequence you've described regarding Milander
is actually from a later S1 episode; they don't solve the "bathtub" murder in the pilot.
As such you might want to edit your post to put block out the spoilers :)
Image list the upcoming "The Gypsy Moths" as featuring a commentary; is this information wrong? I too thought that after Sept 11th "Black Sunday" would not be seeing a release any time soon, but I would have thought that the success of "The Sum of All Fears" has paved the way for its release...
I too would guess that it is due to licensing issues; the song was featured in the credits when it aired here on TV, so I would imagine that it's simply that Momentum didn't get the rights to the song. Lack of OAR and now an altered soundtrack is easily enough to put me off buying this set.
Very sad news indeed :frowning:. Mr Frankenheimer was one of my favourite American directors, and one of my favourites when it came to providing DVD commentaries. My condolencies to his friends and family.
I own the DVD; it's sad to read that this edition of this classic western doesn't compare well with the laserdisc. What supplements does the laserdisc have that the DVD doesn't?
