Sub receiving feedback - what gives?

Hey guys - thanks for all the advice. It turns out that the outlet that the satellite receiver was plugged into was grounded improperly. When the satellite guy moved it to a different outlet, the humming went away.

Sub receiving feedback - what gives?

Is this something he should require the satellite guys to fix? Or is this something he could fix himself? He wrote HSU Research and they said something to the effect of getting an adapter to negate the ground in the subwoofer power cord (i.e. a three-prong to 2-prong adapter). Would that do the...

Sub receiving feedback - what gives?

Hey all - was hoping y'all would have some advice for a friend of mine. He recently had satellite TV installed and when he hooked it up to his HT system, he said his subwoofer started humming big time. It was like it was getting feedback from the satellite signal and he wasn't sure what was...

What am I doing wrong? I really need help.

Did you make sure that your "A speakers" were on? Generally there's an A/B switch to switch btw your A & B speakers, but you can also toggle it so they are both off.

    Entry-lvl system for my father-in-law - recommendations?

PaulDA - yeah, I've actually thought of the possibility that a non-HTiB system could cause problems, but I think if I helped him hook it up, then he could learn to operate it. A brief update - I picked up an open-box Yamaha HTR5650 (6.1, DTS-ES, PLII) from Sears (paid $160) tonight which I...

    Entry-lvl system for my father-in-law - recommendations?

Help me get into my FIL's good graces - or at least help keep me there as a dutiful SIL. Heh. My FIL is basically starting from scratch and set a limit of $600 right now. He currently has an aging Pioneer stereo receiver & a set of mains (possibly from an old rack system, so not great). He's...

Flexy rack with 3/4" rod. What size to drill the holes?

I'm also in the process of building a flexy entertainment center except I'm using 5/8" diameter all-threaded rods. I'll be using an 11/16" spade drill bit which should drill a hole just hair larger than the diameter of the threaded rod. For 3/4", I would think you could use a 13/16" drill bit...

Interest in a flexy rack links page?

Here's one from one of the computing forums that I frequent: add the http (arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?q=Y&a=tpc&s=50009562&f=34709834&m=2850959575&p=3)

    Building an entertainment stand...

Here's another one based on the flexy-rack principle that I absolutely *love* that kind of fits your criteria. He raised the sides of his rack. And the one I'm building will pretty much surround the TV as well. (add the http)...

    Ascend 340 L/R

Awww, I feel so loved to have so many of you trying to answer my questions. Unfortunately, the price of the 340c's is a bit out of my price range so it looks like I'm going to have to stick with the 170s for now. Thanks again.

    Ascend 340 L/R

Just out of curiosity, where did you get the stands for the 340s that you guys are talking about? Is there a picture of it somewhere and is it another unadvertised product that Ascend carries?

    speaker wires included?????????(plz help)

The only way you'd get speaker wires included is if you bought a shelf mini-system or a home-theater-in-a-box (HTiB) I think. Most speakers sets or pairs don't come with speaker wire. One of the best place to get it is at Home Depot for < 24 cents/foot.

    Viable strategy for Ascend speakers?

Wow, thanks again you guys. I may call & see if he'll be willing to work with me if I got it in a slightly different order (the fronts & 170 as a center), and then the other 170 and 340c (or another 2 170s). Btw, what do you recommend as far as speaker stands? Are the ones they carry priced...

    Viable strategy for Ascend speakers?

Well, as I'm very satisfied with my Sony SA-WM40 sub right now and that's the most expensive portion of the pkg deal. I think I will hold off on getting the VTF-2 for a good long while (as much as I would love to have one) as my budget is limited. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will be...

    Viable strategy for Ascend speakers?

Another question, is there any difference between the Ascend CBM-170 (sold in pairs) and the "CBM-170 center" other than the grill? I thought about either wall or ceiling mounting my surrounds, but that's not a definite thing until we move into our new house & figure out how we want to set...

    Viable strategy for Ascend speakers?

Hi all, After reading reviews & forum posts & getting some feedback, I've decided to upgrade my cheapie KLH bookshelf speakers to Ascends. However, I do have a limited budget so I can't get all 5 speakers at once. Would this be a viable alternative? Ultimately, I want to have the CBM-170s...

Hey the White van guys tried to sell speakers to me. Ha, ha, ha

Other than the fact that they could be produced by the same company, is this a valid reason to avoid Fluance speakers? I mean, it seems like everyone who has a set of Fluance speakers loves them. If they sound awesome for the price, does it matter who makes them?

Need help deciding on Low-Cost 5.1 Setup

I'm especially interested in what recommendations people have as well since I'm in a similar boat. My wife & I just bought a new house and I'm wanting to upgrade my home theater setup. The living room in the new house is 22'x17'. I also was considering the Fluance SX-HTB but it seems like the...

    Sears Price Match and WM40

Thanks all for all your suggestions. I was unsuccessful at price matching it at the first Sears store I went to (not only that - they were out of stock). Fortunately, we have two different Sears stores within 20 miles of where I live. So last night, I found out the other store had some in...
