Still using my Onkyo TXDS898 that cannot recognize Dolby on some DirecTV channels and some Disney DVD's. ANY a/v receiver that would allow me to access all the latest options would be "ultimate" at this point. Paradigm Studio speakers(7.1 setup) still going strong. Could use an updated...
Still using my Onkyo TXDS898 that cannot recognize Dolby on some DirecTV channels and some Disney DVD's (remember those days?). ANY a/v receiver that would allow me to access all the latest options would be "ultimate" at this point. Paradigm Studio speakers(7.1 setup) still going strong...
With an Onkyo TX898 that doesn't match current Dolby formats, it's time. For some Directv channels, I have to turn Dolby OFF so the dialogue doesn't contains audible gaps.
Oops. I was playing around and found the speakers worked for other inputs. So I double checked all the wires. Somehow the wire was not pushed in all the way for the left audio feed for the input that was giving me trouble. Arrrggghh! Methinks a little gremlin was involved. At least I am back in...
I have my 898 hooked up to a 6.1 setup (Paradigm Studio v2). The front left channel and left surround channels have no sound coming from them in nearly all sound modes including All Channel Stereo. They do produce white noise from the speaker calibration menu at the appropriate levels. The front...
Chris, I am still using my 5 year old 898. While I cannot answer your question directly, here is what I am doing. I am taking the video feed (HDMI) directly from the device output(s) to the TV input(s). You could also use component feed the same way. The audio feed (optical) from the devices...
Wayne, Thanks for your reply. Does that mean I would need an additional LNB to feed the second tuner? Since I am going with a two-room system now, is there some way I could feed off the second room or am I better off with three? Bob
Lew, Thanks for the feedback. It definitely helps to add some clarity. Based on the reps feedback, I am planning on contacting DIRECTV customer service to relay my expectations prior to installation date, but don't really expect they'll do anything about it. Bob
I currently receive cable TV feed directly into my VCR. Since I don't have any premium channels, there's no cable box. The beauty of this setup is that I can record any channel via the VCR while watching something else on the TV (incl PIP capability). Once I go to DIRECTV, I believe I will lose...
I am in the process of getting DIRECTV for the first time. In researching options, I noticed that some satellite receivers have digital audio ouput capability and some don't. Since I have a 6.1 setup in the same room, I wanted to tie it in with satellite receiver. My question is really how much...
I recently purchased an Onkyo 898 7.1 channel receiver. The room it currently sits in (new space not yet built) only has room for 6.1 setup. Instead of using 2 back surrounds, I'm using the back Left surround with a center channel placed behind the listening position.
While calibrating, I...
JasonDG,
I bought Liberty S-video, composite audio/video and 12 gauge in-wall speaker wire recently. Most of these were THX certified FWIW. I have been very happy so far, but I haven't done any A/B tests since I've just started building my HT setup. I had learned about Liberty from...
Gentlemen,
Thanks for your quick and very helpful advice!:) I appreciate your response and can't wait to redirect the speaker. This is just way too much fun.
Bob
I recently purchased a Paradigm Studio 6.1 setup including a Studio/CC center channel. With my current entertainment center, I was forced to place the CC approx. 8" above the TV. The speaker is built to project upward about 5 degrees off vertical. In reading through various threads and...
Luke,
I, too, enjoy my Paradigm Studio 6.1 setup. I have 80's in the front (dime fans - I know your concerns, but I like them), Studio CC front and rear centers, Studio ADP's L/R surrounds, Servo-15 sub. Auditioned a variety of models in similar US$ price range including Polk, Klipsch, B&W...
Bobby_N,
Another thread on the same subject FWIW:

I don't dispute what Henning is hearing. I don't know what you will hear. Listening for yourself is really the only way to decide IMO. Happy listening:) !
Bob
gomez_a,
Thanks for asking the question. I, too, have recently purchased na Onkyo 898 and was struggling with the same issue just this past weekend. It's great to have a place like this to get answers to your questions. You guys are great:emoji_thumbsup:
Bob
Rich,
Quotes for Paradigm for comparison purposes from a Canadian dealer and approximate US equivalent.
PW2200 CN$750 US$475
Servo-15 Veneer w/ X-30 CN$1400 US$890
All,
Thanks for your responses. Listening is definitely the final arbiter. I was mainly interested in what others may have heard (or not) when they listened or bought.
Bob
Evan,
Are the crossovers the 3rd-order, 2nd-order electro-acoustic numbers?
40/60 3rd 1.5kHz 2nd 400 Hz
80's 3rd 1.8 2nd 400
100's 3rd 2.0 2nd 250
ADP 3rd 1.5
CC 4th 1.5
If so, would the above imply that the 100's are also sonically different? Please bear with me...
I am currently researching a 6.1 system for a 2600 cu ft HT 70%/Music 30% setup (may move it to a 4000 cu ft room in the future). Paradigm is high on the short list. In reviewing previous threads, I've noticed a strong Studio 40 contingent, a strong Studio 100 contingent, a respectable Studio...
These are the Canadian MSRP for Veneer I recently received from a dealer in Quebec:
Studio/20 $1100
Studio/40 $1450
Studio/60 $2000
Studio/80 $2400
Studio/100 $3000
Servo-15 $2200
For what it's worth...
Anyone have an opinion on 6.1 surrounds? Should they all be the same (i.e. dipoles vs directs vs mixture)? I have Paradigm on my short list and for my purposes, HT 70%, was considering the Studio ADP's or 20's for side surrounds. What would be the benefit/issues with using the ADP's on the...
Steve,
To add a different thought. Recently bought a Pioneer DV-440 for $170 and am very happy with it, I wasn't looking for progressive scan either and didn't want to enter the DVD-Audio/SACD fight. Reviews on Audioreview.com have been very favorable.
