Jon Risch's DIY Acoustic Panels and Bass Traps

Yes, it makes a difference, but for lower bass control you need almost complete coverage of wall celling and corner junctions.

    Price check on Isle 5?

Wow, gangs all here. Kyle, I wish you would get buisy making some good IB sub drivers, there is hardly anything available anymore.

    Texas DIY'ers, POST HERE!

I might be interested, I'm in the Fort Worth area but I don’t get out often and can’t bring anything to a meet, as all my stuff is quite un-moveable. Is this more of a gathering to talk or some sort of shootout where people will be bringing projects. [email protected]

    Infinite Baffle Sub Project

Series parallel of 4 dual VC at 4ohm on each VC will net you 2 ohms per channel, so If these drivers are the dual 4 ohm VC version then it probably wont work with that amp, you need a good Pro Amp with stable 2 ohm operation. Here is a wiring guide...

Speaker builders - what tools do I NEED?

A good orbital sander is a must, and a compound miter saw is a very nice addition as well.

Any good 18" drivers available at reasonable price?

The Maelstrom 18 is the only one I know of and I'm not even sure if it's shipping yet, the Tumult 18" has a way to go evedently and the assualt series is still in wait.

War of the Worlds damaged my SVS!

Somewhat apples and oranges concerning the ability to play this soundtrack. No single sub will play this soundtrack at ref properly if it’s run without some limiting/filtering on the low end. Well except for a few esoteric multi driver commercial ones.

What are the current best 12" drivers out right now..SQ is the goal.

I'd be careful with the Velodyne drivers, I've tried a HGS15 woofer in a DIY sealed and apreodic and had have little good to report about it. It looked great, huge magnet structure and beefy suspension, but sounded like crap no matter what I put it in.

What are the current best 12" drivers out right now..SQ is the goal.

You might consider a two step sub system, an IB for the really low stuff and a sealed box system with a little overlap and EQ/Phase shift to allow a better transition into the mains. Don’t forget the room has more to do with SQ then anything else. I have an IB and the added sealed pair of ACI...

Amen brother. I also have my DIY Sonosubs up for sale. Thanks Matt.

Center Channel Project finished after nearly a year of work.

Michael: Thanks for the compliment. My speakers are however so odd looking I find it hard sometimes to just listen to the music, in reality I would prefer an invisible speaker so I'm not so distracted, but they do make a conversation piece. BlakeN: Thanks for the tip, but that forum is...

Center Channel Project finished after nearly a year of work.

Wow, this was once the coolest DIY forum around, now it’s a ghost town, what happened? In fact all the DIY forums seem to be dead, no one is interested in others projects any more. So sad.

Center Channel Project finished after nearly a year of work.

Most of you probably frequent AVS or DIY Audio so this is a repeat for the few who don’t, plus this site has been so slow lately, so I thought it could use another topic, even if its posted in other forums. Like most of my projects, I seem to take way too much time trying to find the proper...

2k Budget for Subwoofer, what do you recommend

Houses are too leaky, the bass will go right through the sheetrock so you will never pressurize a house the like a car. Good recommendations from others already so I will just second the notion of a massive IB, it will be the best bass you have ever heard and you will throw rocks at your old car...

    Dish DVR 'Technical' Question

It's probably in "Dual Mode", if set to "Single" mode it will allow you to watch one program while Recording another.

    Staining Gurus

Realize that all oil base clear coats like the Minwax will amber over time, some consider this a desirable attribute. However, if some of the surface is painted like a project I did, the ambering was a disaster as it turned the whitish paint into a dull piss yellow after a bout a year. I use a...

    Finally finished my infinite baffle

The BFD has a built in HT boost output, works fine on mine with a Mackie Pro Amp, also the amp itself has 2 different gain inputs if I remember correctly.

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

I guess the fact that I reiterated in my last post that it was my opinion wasn’t good enough. Obviously you would rather discuss the semantics of my posting vernacular then the topic. Maybe I should just leave this discussion alone. BTW, everything I write is an opinion based on my experience.

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

I wasn’t accusing, I was asking what reference (physical reference) you have to connect your conclusion. Every thing here is someone’s opinion, I clearly stated mine, is it not OK to have an opinion on a forum full of opinions? I am biased toward the analog method because it works better then...

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

Sorry, didn’t understand, so your opinion based on reading some articles is more valid then my opinion based on experience, now I understand where you are coming from. Now I know not to take you seriously, your just here to beat your chest and proclaim your knowledge above anyone else’s...

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

That’s because your player isn't doing BM correctly, no big surprise there, the phase issues are separate and shouldn’t be a big problem, just change your distance setting for the sub in your processor. I also have the full ETF suite including their new R&D which links to the BFD for filter...

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

No, I clearly implied this is my opinion based on my experiences of many different combinations, and clearly stated that those units with proprietary digital links between the Player and Processor are the only ones that can handle the throughput of the digital stream without degradation (again...

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

I have the Sony 777Es player and I'm pretty sure (with latest Firmware) it is the latest in BM and there is no comparison to the ICBM route. Also, Kevin, how do you know your player is doing BM right, have you compared it to an ICBM (or equivalent) in your system?
  25. Mike Keith

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

You will never know if the player or processor is doing proper BM if you don’t have a reference to proper BM. This is the point I was trying to get across (unsuccessfully) to Lewis. Pontificate and speculate all you want, when you get tired of that just get a ICBM and hear it done right, then...

    Audio analyzers. Which one?

Don’t bother with either, not nearly resolute enough for low frequencies. Try True RTA or ETF 5.x if you really want to know what is going on in a room, their cheaper but less user friendly. Decay is a very important measurement and will let you know what frequencies are Ringing, plus Impulse...

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

Lewis: It isn’t a-boot how sophisticated the chips for BM are, it's a-boot the data rate that it would have transfer in order to get the full resolution and volume balance out of the .1 channel, it takes a huge amount of fast data to match the source resolution. A DSP of this age does not...

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

The only way a player can do BM is via DSP, DSP can't handle the massive amounts of data on Hi-Rez with current technology, that's why none work properly, not even the latest and greatest players. Give up on proper BM from within the player, it wont happen.

DVD audio/SACD Subwoofer channel lower volume

Already explained why, I have a new Sony 777ES SACD player that does bass management with time delay and plenty of gain on the sub out, but it's no match for the ICBM way. If you don’t have one you don’t know what a huge difference there is when the bass is properly extracted.
