Adam, My girlfriend just bought a 32" Samsung HDTV-ready set at Costco and she seems to be suffering the same grief you are going through. The picture looks horrible compared to my old 31" direct-view JVC set. She has yet to "tweak" it as others have suggested so she hasn't come to the point...

Just wiggling the cable doesn't seem to cause the problem to alternate. I have to unconnect the cable and reconnect it for the snowy picture to go away.

I have a Denon 2600 and have also noticed the exact same problem you are describing. In my case, the hiss is present even at 0 volume and with any type of input. It is always there... I'd be interested in possible sources/remedies. Someone mentioned a ground loop problem...what is that?
