If I may ask, what is the running time of the "1982 cut" on this new release? I've never quite been able to figure out exactly what played in theaters back then. I've read some things that suggest the film was actually fiddled with while it was in theaters, or maybe that the preview/premiere...
I feel it was kind of mismarketed. It was sold as this celebration of the "magic of movies," when it was really more about how devoting yourself to your passion can complicate your relationship with your family. But yes, it's a very good movie. :)
Just wanted to bump this thread to acknowledge the passing of David J. Skal, who produced documentaries and provided commentaries for a number of the classic Universal Monsters films on DVD (and carried over to Blu-ray and UHD). He was killed in a tragic car accident on New Year's Day.
His...
This is going back to an earlier conversation, but concerning the "one point red" issue on the 2008 Blu-rays...
Am I correct in my understanding that the Blu-rays ended up being essentially "one point" more red than the DCPs? Is that based on a 50-point scale, which would translate to about 2%...
Not sure if this is the place to discuss this, but the linear channel Showtime is officially "Paramount Plus With Showtime" starting today. However, all the additional linear channels still retain their regular "Showtime" names (Showtime 2, Showcase, Showtime Extreme). And apparently some...
There's definitely room for improvement on The Dark Crystal. The 4K video remaster is fine, but the compression on Sony's relatively early UHD isn't as good as it could be.
Dolby Vision would be a nice addition, as would the original audio, since we've been stuck with the error-ridden remixes...
I know KILLS did that, but that was in 2021 when we were still at the height of Covid (even though it's still technically an issue for many). It was the same with ENDS?
At any rate, that was specifically on Peacock alone and for a limited time, similar to the HBO Max situation in 2021. For...
Wow. Only 2-1/2 weeks after its theatrical release.
I'm starting to wonder why studios are still even bothering to put their movies in theaters at all.
Not sure, but the track on the standard Blu-ray is actually true stereo, and not dual-mono. So the "original" track is not on the release at all.
To be fair, as others have pointed out, this 5.1 doesn't sound too gimmicky or revisionist. It's mostly a very subtle expansion, so I can probably...
To be fair, when the extended version first came out in 2000, Friedkin still maintained that the original cut was his preferred version. It wasn't until the Blu-ray release in 2010 that it officially became known as the "Extended Director's Cut."
That said, I strongly prefer the original 1973...
Agreed. I will never not be able to associate Alec Guinness with Obi-Wan Kenobi (much to his eternal chagrin, I'm sure), but discovering him through Star Wars led me to also seek out some of his other lauded performances. I'm sure it's the same with Harry Potter fans who were introduced to all...
It was on most laserdiscs and VHS releases, too (aside from the very earliest ones). To be honest, it wasn't hugely different from the original mono (especially compared to what they did to the 2000 version). Aside from the music and sound effects being spread out to stereo, there were a few...
Haven't seen the disc yet, but my digital copy on iTunes has been updated to what is apparently an HD downres of the new remaster, complete with a new 5.1 track that sounds like it was based on the remix made for the 2000 extended version (considerably different from the six-track mix from...
I think it's like any idea they latch onto. The idea itself might be pretty good, but then it's just run completely into the ground by a lack of creativity.
That said, "lack of creativity" is not a problem for the SPIDER-VERSE movies. :) I'm much more tolerant of overused concepts when they're...
Interestingly though, Universal still retains North American theatrical distribution rights for THE MUPPET MOVIE and GREAT MUPPET CAPER (and I think THE DARK CRYSTAL) to this day.
I just wish someone would find the original theatrical audio for CAPER, as the version we've had since the 90s...
It's tempting to roll one's eyes at these reissues, but I have to admit that adding Dolby Vision is a pretty good upgrade in some cases, especially since the HDR highlights on Sony's earlier UHDs could be a bit blown out.
The DV re-release of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA looks noticeably better than...
The line change at Do Lung Bridge was introduced in the Redux cut in 2001; probably an alternate ADR take. It was likely due to the additional scenes during that sequence where Willard is actually looking for fuel. The alternate line was also kept for the Final Cut.
Current digital versions of...
It's not a great movie, but I kind of enjoyed it. It has a pulpy, unassuming feel to it, and at 93 minutes, it doesn't overstay its welcome.
I also think giving away the "twist" so early might actually have been a wise move. If that had been kept as some kind of third-act reveal, it would have...
It's not that bad. There are maybe some questionable color grading choices in the Krypton scenes, but it has about all the detail you're going to get out of a negative that was lit the way it was.
Removing the 5.1 track derived from the 70mm sound mix is the real head-scratcher here.
I saw it in 35mm a few years ago. I don't recall specifics, but I do remember it having some significant stereo separation. But of course, optical Dolby Stereo tracks were notoriously temperamental. There were numerous variables that could affect playback on different prints and in different...
I haven't listened to the podcast, but from what I remember reading at the time, it was the 35mm mix that was "almost mono." The 70mm (at least as it's represented on the 2018 UHD's 5.1 track) has quite a bit of stereo separation in the fronts, and a fair amount in the surrounds.
I don't know...
True enough. It's amazing how fast things turn around because of a few poor decisions, which then lead to more poor decisions trying to compensate for the earlier ones.
I did see it in the 80s as a kid, and even at the age of 9, I knew something was "off." :)
"Kiddie flick" is kind of a loaded term, but the first two films were very much seen as "family entertainment," in that all ages could find something to like, and there was nothing particularly...
To me, it goes back to Richard Donner's continual reference to "verisimilitude." Whether or not it's "realistic" is beside the point; whether it's "believable" in the world you've set up is what matters.
And that's another way QUEST FOR PEACE falls apart. :) One of my favorite parts is where...
In the spirit of keeping the thread on topic, watching SUPERMAN IV again, I was struck by just how choppy it really is.
On top of all the full scenes that were removed, the editing as a whole is just relentlessly pedestrian. Scenes just end and jump to the next one without any sense of rhythm...
