I have just been discussing this with a friend and we've come to the conclusion that the remakes that are better tend to be a second (or third or whatever) adaptations from common source material. e.g. Wizard of Oz Lord of the Rings The Thing (again!) Maltese Falcon Ben Hur too many...

If it's any consolation to you guys it's a two-way street. I've seen British attempts at Married with Children, Golden Girls, That 70s Show and most recently Scrubs - all of which were pretty awful.

I heard Judd Nelson just made it up on the day. There is no punchline as such. Although as he falls through the floor it sounds like he's saying "no sh*t" - which almost works as a punchline
