Cables & etc..
There is a certain minimum level of cable that will
do 90% of the job. Its kind of like wrist watches: Within
the US (WWV coverage), the Junghans RC at $200.00 is much
more accurate than a Rolex at 20 times the price. However,
there are no watches costing less than...
Trey & etc,
Four things to be aware of:
1) In lab tests, Component video (NTSC) is only 5%
sharper, on TV's 36 inch or larger, than S-Video.
S-video is a 30%-40% improvement over composite video.
2) Receivers costing less than 1K USD do not have
video converters. In other words...
Receivers, like other modern electronics, are usually
obsolete by the time they reach the age of 5. Therefore,
give it to the repair guy and buy a new one.
Obsolence is also the main reason not to buy an extended
warranty.
Bob,
In general, it is difficult to tell the difference between
component video and S-video on TVs 32" or less. Component
video has proven to be 5% better on 36" TVs than S-video.
Therefore, if your TV is less than 33", I would use S-video
for all inputs to your receiver. The...
Rich,
1- Multi-gang near the amp, with a pair of female banana
plug fittings for each channel.
2- Yes, install handy box with pair of female banana plug
fittings near each speaker location. A nice alternative
is the higher quality built-in speakers for the surround...
John,
I lot of my HT enjoyment comes from just the selection
process. With that in mind, I would suggest: get a receiver
first, run your existing speakers with it, and then decide
what to get next.
Don't forget to pick up an Avia DVD and SPL meter. A well
calibrated system will...
The reason Claudia wants to run all video through the
receiver is to simplify things a bit.
Recent tests on a 50" monitor only showed a 5% improvement between S-video and component video.
I really don't tink the difference will be noticed on a 32".
50" monitor tests:
Composite >...
Mike,
With a 27" screen TV its unlikely you would notice
any difference between S-video and component video.
I would suggest, run all S-video to the receiver
and use the TV as a monitor only.
My 'wife-friendly system:
Video:
IN: cable TV > VCR > Entech converter > Receiver...
Sam,
..and then after we get all caught up with our mono-blocks,
we can start bi-amping each of our speakers. It just goes
on and on, there is no end to our ..........
Roy,
I have heard most are using two rear center speakers
instead of one in the exact center. The reason is, if one
speaker is placed directly behind, the sound
will seem to come from in front instead of behind. In your
case with only a 6 foot spread, I would put in wiring for
two...
Colin,
I have 4 pair of speakers in my
house attached to my Yamaha's 'surround'
channels. The rear speakers in the main
room are in-wall Russound units with a
Russound ALTx-2-126 volume control. The other
three rooms have Russound ceiling speakers with
the same volume control. I run...
Rod,
A few years ago Yamaha took a plotting mike to several
different venues, fired a blast of sound, and recorded
the resulting echos and reverberations at each facility.
The different Yamaha DSPs simply add the necessary delays
& etc to sound like the material is being played in a...
Rod,
The only negative I would have is the lack of
pre-amp outputs.
My wife purchased one of those big
'arm-wah' enterainment center units. Believe it or not
they (Basset Furniture Co.) left absolutely no room for
for my WEGA 32" and any kind of 'center' speaker. So I:
1) Connected...
The design of all receivers made in the last few
years, raise the possibility of 'the rapid discharge
of high energy producing heat', in the event of an internal
failure. After all, most of them draw over 9 amps of 120VAC.
Therefore, at one time or another, each and every brand has...
Greg,
I think in your case the size of the room and
the distance between the main speakers may be
a consideration. In general, especially if you have
no way to equalize your center channel, try to purchase
a unit from the same manufacturer that is designed to be
a center for your...
jmascio,
How is the new set-up coming along?
I would like to explain, my views are the exact opposite from Allan's.
My system is used every day for: multiple room (CD, Tape,&
tuner) listening, TV, and a couple of DVDs per week.
Because the 'simplicity' I'm looking for is 'ease of use',
I...
Because my 'surround' channel outputs feeds three
others rooms in the house, via Russound, I always
run my HTR-5280 like this:
CDs, tape, tuner, & TV = 'All Channel Stereo" DSP
DVD Movies = DD/DTS "Enhanced" DSP
JRS
Dan,
As far as the audio is concerned, as long as it
has pre-amps in and out for each channel you
should be OK. My first receiver did not have
the pre-amp outputs, big mistake. However, I
also use the Yamaha's built-in center channel
equalizer.
If I were buying today, I would...
