To be fair to Tino, the weekday figures last year were more often overestimates than underestimates, however as Brandon has made clear, New Line do not normally do day by day estimates at all. They usually only do them Thursday and Sunday, so it's not surprising if their weekday estimates are...
I believe, that that $49.13m mon-thur total is the largest weekday gross ever, beating the $45m mon-thur total of ID4.
With weekend projections in the range $45-$47m TTT should pass $200m on either sunday or monday.
Brandon at BOM doesn't think it likely that the Yahoo story is correct, as other studios estimates come in around the $28M. He does think NL are being conservative with their $26m.
Interesting snippet from Brandon which may explain last years weekday overestimates by NL:
I think people are being a bit ott with the Faramir changes. I watched this part particularly closely and noticed that in the initial temptation by the ring, where I thought his expression was wonderfully done, you could see him reevalute when he sees Frodo's reaction. Then later you see his...
There's only early info up on overseas. Hollywood Reporter have an article. In the UK, France, Germany, Denmark the film looks to have improved significantly on last year. In the UK it looks set to be the biggest opener of the year at around 25% higher than FOTR.
Judging by the number of sold outs and extra midnight performances being reported in the forums at Box Offic Mojo we could see some big numbers this week.
First predictions are starting to appear
Lee's Movie Info Weekend:
LOTR: The Two Towers $73.7m (3622 theatres)
Gangs of New York...
GONY will be hit by TTT this weekend, according to Brandon at Box Office Mojo tracking for TTT is an astonishing 99% awareness (that's last years Potter levels) with 80% saying it is their first choice of movie this weekend.
GONY may be helped by overspill from sold out TTT performances though.
HP:COS should get a fillip over the holiday period, but it will be starting from a lower base than last year.
Die Another Day is showing better legs than I would have expected.
In the case of Nemesis the big test will be next weekend, can it stay with a reasonable drop or is it going to get...
Here's some info on TTT's opening.
New Line are apparently shipping 7000 prints out in North America.
Box Office Mojo has TTT opening in 3600 theatres.
Not sure how this compares with the first one but I think it's more.
There's an article on New Line up at Yahoo which has comments about tracking and advance ticket sales on TTT.

I just read elsewhere that FOTR was still in 61 theatres in the US when the DVD/VHS was released, and indeed still in 40 theatres this weekend, 8 months after its initial release. Talk about legs.
Tino, what was your friends opinion on the violence in GONY? I've heard that it is quite high, which might be a factor against the film from an academy perspective.
I think the sequels argument doesn't hold water, the reason very few sequels have been nominated for oscars isn't, in my opinion at least, because the academy won't vote for sequels, it's because most sequels aren't actually very good.
As for the voting patterns, going on past results who...
Funnily enough it got a limited rerelease in the UK for this long Jubilee weekend, a significant number of multiplexes reengaged it.
Brandon has an interesting chart up comparing FOTR, spiderman and TPM and ATOC. From the rate AOTC is dropping it may not catch FOTR after all, so FOTR may stay...
International Box Office on FOTR rose by another $9m to $511m, largely due to a continuing strong performance in Japan where it and Monster's inc have been swapping #1 position since release. Last week it was FOTR, this week Monsters Inc but only by very small amounts. Both movies are showing...
On a brighter note, the front page on The One Ring Net is reporting that Shochiku/Herald have raised their estimate of final gross in Japan to $130m based on the first 4 weeks of release, I would guess this would also apply to Monsters Inc as the two movies box office have been very close since...
FOTR as crossed another milestone this week. Once tuesday's US grosses are added in the film will have crossed the $800m mark worldwide (#6 unadjusted having passed Star Wars this weekend). It has now taken $502m internationally (#5 unadjusted) and is currently still adding around $10m a week...
