Acoustically transparent projector screens, Love-em, Hate-em, Why?

Make sure you check out whether your projector will work well with a perforated screen. Some projectors will show a moire pattern from the combination of the perforations and the projected image. Bob

Things I wish I would have done differently in my project

Things I wish I had done differently: 1. Installed a full size fridge istead of 1/2 size one. 2. Planned for more media storage "Nobody is going to have over 500 DVD's" Yeah, right. 3. Finished everything off before installing the projector. This slowed us down to a crawl finishing...

    Carpet Tiles

I went the industrial carpet tile route as well. Not as soft as conventional pad/carpet but a whole lot more durable and it is nice to only have to change out a few tiles instead of the whole carpet if an "accident" happens.

If you were to build a "Digital Media Server", what would you use?

Another vote for a Raid controller and raid 5. You might even want to look at the SATA hard drives and controllers for an easy upgrade path.

    anyone installed square carpet tiles?

You probably want to look at the commercial type of carpet tile if you like what you saw in an office building. I used industrial tile in my theater and studio and it has worked out great. The best part is that if I do manage to damage an area of the carpet, yes I am a klutz, I only have to...

    AMD vs Pentium

I have been following this thread for a few days now and I thought I might add my .02$ I annually put together anywhere from 15 to 25 computers for varying applications and am suprised at how many of the people I deal with are still looking at "clock speed" as the determining factor for how well...

Building Screen with Motorized Moving Border

I'm still working on my system. I am using Bosch aluminum extrusions for the framework and generic electric motors for the opening and closing of the masking. I'll post some pics as soon as I get something working that looks good. BTW it looks like it is going to be about 3 inches deep, wall...

The wife said Yes ... (longish)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a really cool wife who loves home theater. She has helped plan and build our dedicated theater from the beginning. How many of you guys can say the your wife mudded and taped your theater ;) The only bad thing was is that she insisted I install our projector...

    Projector Wiring Question

The only problem with prewiring for a projector of unknown origin is that you won't know what kind of throw you need to plan for. Maybe the best thing to do would be look at a number of projectors and find a happy medium for the distance from the screen and route to near that point.

I failed the HT junkie test! I'm so sorry!!

I'm wondering if there is a voacation in doing Home Theater Addict interventions. I'm sure I would have more than enough candidates right here on the HTF :)

Equipment in Enclosed Closet...How do I get the Remotes to work?

You are looking at an IR repeater setup. That would include and IR receiver of some sort, an IR repeater/distribution block, and an array of IR emmiters to get the IR signal to your various components. You can get the various parts at online stores like smarthome.com.

    Found this theater while surfing

Quote: "How is this accomplished, I wonder? That studio looks pretty "geeked-up". I'd be interested in seeing more of that." If he has a HTPC and about 1 to 2 Terabyte of storage he could just be accessing it directly from a hard drive or array. I keep about 200 movies on my server and...

    DIY Screens

I made up mine using blocker fabric for the main screen and a black poplin for the border. Looks great with my Studio Experience 13-HD and was very easy to put together. If you want specific instructions on how to do just pm me. Here is a link to some very early shots of my theater and the...

    Wall-mount RCA Patch Panels

It is very easy to make your own patch panels. Rat Shack sells Female RCA surface mount connectors which you could mount on a blank wall plate. I did this for a number of connections going from my theater to my dedicated media closet and they worked out very well, were cheap, and easy.

    Projector hacking

I totaly agree with Jeremy. Halogens would give you a terrible and uncorrectable yellow shift in color. For any lighting application where color is important stay completely away from the standard halogens.

"THX", "Dolby Digital" and "HTF" plaques

Make sure that the orginal .eps files are stuffed/zipped. The compression sometimes used by various services plays havoc with .eps files.

How cool do you think it feels to be Ron Epstein?

As with all great things, I am sure that he has done a lot of work and made many sacrifices to take the Home Theater Forum and himself where they are today. It just makes it that much sweeter in the end.

    Prewiring for Projector

I totally agree with Bill. If you have the option, running some large conduit so you can snake whatever cabling you need to the projector is the abosolute best way to go. I have upgraded my projector cabling twice already and this makes things very easy.

Recommendation for IDE Raid 1 controller?

I have a number of computers set up with RAID using on board RAID controllers, RAID controller cards, and software RAID. All of them work well but I do have to say that the hardware units do perform much better and don't add much if any overhead to your system. My $.02.

Coaxial spdif connection out of XBox

I have an Xbox with the component breakout and optical spdif connection but the way my system is configured I can only use a coaxial connection for the DD. Does anyone make a breakout device for the Xbox that has coaxial instead of or including a optical spdif connection?

    Sound treatment ideas....

The polyfill that they sell at JoAnn's really isn't the best for acoustical treatments. It isn't as dense as the proper material. If you do a web search you should be able to find it. I sometimes get a batting material from a company here in Wisconsin called Active Foam. It is the right stuff...

Would I notice a difference going from a Denon 3800 to a HTPC?

I have to agree with Max. I do use an HTPC with my SE 13HD projector and a 7' screen where there is a night and day difference between the HTPC and set top DVD player. That said, I took my htpc to friends house to see what it would look like driving his Toshiba and there was almost no noticable...
