another vote for the Big Dig from me ! I have been negotiating the journey from Logan to Hartford a couple of times every year for 5-6 years now - I went over last week and was amazed at how easy it was to get out of the airport and straight through to I90 West in 10 minutes. I look forward...
I love this film and sat down to watch it a few years back with a girlfriend on television. I pointed out my 'insider knowledge' that this film was made with three directors, each directing a different section...........to which my girlfriend replied puzzled, how did they each direct a...
good question Andrew, not sure if my grade C at 'A' level can handle this one, but first thougts are that for there to be a waterfall near the sea... would require high land or cliffs (obvious that bit), and water approaching the sea would have travelled some distance always moving towards and...
eh..fair point Andrew :emoji_thumbsup: I still don't want to see it (or my sport, Rugby) appear in the Olympics, lets get back to objective sports and the Olympic ideal of , higher, faster, longer or something like that.
The above article explains clearly why England (actually its Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the Olympics) is not in the Olympics football (never 'soccer' please) event. For 'footie' fans in GB, the football tournament is pointless - it hardly gets a mention over here. Mnay like...
so we WERE still fighting in 1812 as I said, I would have thought that capturing your capital was pretty important. The troops that did the fighting in the American wars were not the crack troops which had just wooped Boney's arse ! I do understand some Americans do get the dates of their...
Hey, David, the war wasn't over in 1776...the fighting went on in North America for years. Didn't we burn DC in 1812 or around then? and the battle of New Orleans was around the same time before peace was finally declared....? Now you may not know this, but the war at the time was against...
I am always amazed that Americans think that we Brits are bothered by the result of the war of Independence - we don't, at the end of the day it was a civil war, it was mainly Brits against Brits, and the mainland was more concerned with fighting Napolean, thats where the best troops went...
hard to believe it is 5 years...but they were interesting times. As a Brit early adopter with a reg1 only Tosh 3006, I and many others this side of the water were anxious that DIVX died as we would never have access to DIVX titles. Wasn't DIVX touted as 'Open' DVD by Circuit City? On my...
Lew, many would feel that criticism from Patten was tinged with more than a little jealousy, afterall it was Monty who had been given overall command of the land forces on D-Day not him. It would surely be fair to say, the successes of D-Day are surely as much attributable to Monty as say the...
thanks for the reply, it is dispointing that there is little coverage of the rest of the allies - the BBC and other stations in the UK have covered the whole story. There was an article in the press here which was critical of the D-Day museum in New Orleans, I believe this was set up by Stephen...
Hi I am watching the TV coverage in the UK for the various celebrations and commemorations for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. I was wondering how extensively this was being covered in the USA and other countries ? The BBC in true professional style have been telling the...
I share the concerns that people have about this film. I was wondering how many Americans of German descent joined the Luftwaffe before 1941 ? There must have been some, plenty joined the German army. Now why do you think Cruise isn't interested in telling one of their fascinating...
Another vote for Open Range, the finale was superb. How about a mention for the corridor fight in the Castle, from Where Eagles Dare ? with Eastwood and two machine guns holding off the entire German Mountain Battalion !! :)
this has been out on reg2 DVD for some years now. No extras but at least better than my old well worn VHS copy. I love this film, they just don't make 'em like this any more....even though I think Steiger did ham it up a little too much, the battle scenes are incredible.
my top name drops.... met Spielberg 1988 filming Last Crusade in UK (Ford and Connery on the same occasion) The Queen (of England that is) Royal Garden party. George Best (worlds greatest footballer) in a pub ! Robert Morley , in Henley Daniel Day Lewis, way before he was...
there was a small article in the general press in the UK a few months back which flagged up that the Walton original score was being re recorded for a Reg2 release. This is one that I am happy to buy again and swap my reg1 version. the DTS will be icing on the cake - the commentary and...
can't wait for this one...my favourite film of last year and most wanted disc of this one. I am delighted its going to be a great release. I haven't decided whether to go for the slightly earlier, cheaper reg2 release or wait for reg 1 ?
I searched for this thread having just watched Tarzan and his mate, on UK tv. What a great film, easily the best of the Tarzan films. It is raunchier and more graphically violent than anything else from that era. I am dissapointed that this isn't available, heres hoping for next year...
Jeff, recently many of Londons museums have gone admission free. These include some of the best in the world.... Natural History Museum British Museum Imperial War Museum after those I would include on the 'classic' tour Buckingham Palace (you can pre-book tickets) Tower of London...
Mark, whilst I know that it was not your intention, praise for this films 'realism' is offensive to a certain group of people who lived through the actual reality of the Troubles. The realism you refer to is ONE persons (the writers) reality... Discussing the film rather than the politics...
ho hum.... just remember that this is just one , biased view of this day  The film largely ignores the testimony of the actual paratroopers, and ignores reports that the IRA shot first and were active that day. Still, obviously there are plenty of people watching this political...
haven't seen The Wannsee Conference, but Conspiracy was superb (if thats the right word). I believe that this recently won a BAFTA (Brit oscar) for single drama....and yes Branagh is at his best here.....as good as Shackleton.
tipping, is easily the most anxiety inducing issue for Brits visiting the States...:frowning: to tip or not to tip.... in Britain it is still largely seen as optional, although increasingly expected. Its not that we are mean, but we do not like the 'automatic' assumption of paying a tip...
