Sony Pictures continues to drop existing widescreen transfers

Folks, I have it on good authority that this is actually part of a plan to "downgrade" the DVD format, in preparation for the new HD-DVD/Blu-Ray hybrid (remember that Sony now wants to merge the two competing formats). I'm not joking - the new leading team at Sony is behind this - they intend...

    DVD a ripoff?

I don't think you can compare DVDs with cars or shirts. At this point, you can't pop a shirt into a $300 computer and obtain a perfect copy within minutes.

It seems they'll be using the same transfer as the one for the "cereal box version"

xXx: Uncensored Unrated Director's Cut 4-19

I have a serious question, don't take it as thread-crapping: What is to like about this film? I thought it was one of the worst pieces of celulloid I've ever seen, and I thought this thread will make fun of "yet another DVD edition of a crappy movie, while more deserving films are on the...

Samuel Bronston's titles "55 days at Peking", "El Cid", "Fall of the Roman

There's a very easy way to get rid of this minor annoyance, if you run the disc through DVDShrink and get rid of the subtitles, then burn the film to a blank DVD.

Chariots of Fire,The Life of Emile Zola&The Broadway Melody of 1929 in February

Wrong. I have the R2 DVD, and it's widescreen, albeit not anamorphic. One of the earliest R2 releases, too... Chalk up another reason to buy a region-free player.

    Alexander-- Stone editing the DVD!

Could this be one of the instances when bootleggers who release theatrical releases would actually perform a service for collectors and film buffs? I'm not discussing the quality/flaws of the film itself, and I'm not going to be dragged into an endless debate about ethics, or technical...

How long before studios stop production on current DVDs?

I don't agree with people who believe in the "pay-per-view" system (as a viable, and eventually victorious alternative to DVDs), simply because of market conditions outside the U.S. are very much against this kind of format. Just as they were with the original divx...

Comprehensive List of Pan & Scan DVDs (Version 3)

"Chariots of Fire" !!! (until the new edition is released, that is) To add insult to injury, some of these FS titles were actually transferred in Widescreen on European DVDs. Case in point: "Frantic" and "The Sting". *edit* Also, will you consider Canadian studios as well? "Jesus of...

    CD to MP3?

Yes, dbpoweramp is free. The PowerPack is not free, but you don`t actaully need it. You can rip a CD to .wav with CDEx and then convert the resulting files with dbpoweramp. Why? because sometimes, if the source is a CD-R, and the CD-ROM drive is too fast, ripping/encoding on-the-fly can...

Richard Williams' "The Thief and the Cobbler" coming to DVD!

For those who don't know, the film was already put on DVD, about three years ago... oddly enough, only available in cereal boxes sold in Canada. It's a barebones and P&S release, but it WAS on DVD!!!

Harry Palmer films on DVD availability

I actually enjoyed the 1995 films "Bullet to Beijing" and "Midnight in St.Petersburg", featuring Sir Michael Caine as an older and embittered Harry Palmer, trying to establish a business in Russia, of all places... While not stellar, they're still good movies, if you like the character (and the...

Out of the loop for five years... now looking for a receiver and speakers for CDN$500

Ah, well... An update is in order. :) BestBuy recently had a 3-day sale, during which they were offering 5 Yamaha systems per store every day, at $299, in other words $200 cheaper than regular price. I got myself one. The receiver is HT5730, and the speakers are Yamaha as well (the whole...

Canadians! What do we do about our substandard studios???

Someone changed the thread title? I'm pretty sure I said "crappy" studios, not "substandard" ?! While more elegant, "substandard" does not accurately convey my disgust. As for ordering from Amazon.com do they have any trouble with canadian credit cards? and is the exchange rate fair?

Canadians! What do we do about our substandard studios???

Seville has already produced a second version of "Le déclin" which is anamorphic, with good sound and subtitles, and even a featurette... The first version was atrocious. You'd think that, OK, if the companies are too poor to do anything about films in the national patrimony, someone in the...
